Walkin' around in circles--can't even find a friend----people make me crazy--I'm lost and all alone--can't tell the bad from the good---can't see the forest from the trees---vultures flyin' around me. Daaammnn this song IS my frigid life------I'm suing Leon for plagiarism and copyright theft of my frigid life! Great tune and one of his all time best! Thanks for post!
@AngryHatter Leon asked a Zulu friend how to say lost in the woods and Mr. Zulu said there is no way to say that because Zulu people do not get lost (in the woods). So it as close a translation as possible - who really cares 'cause it sounds cool.
Lucky me. Grew up in San Francisco Bay Area, 60's flower-child, saw more killer bands and artists than anyone not working at the Fillmore. This song was hard to find; have to see if Carnival is on CD. Kinda funny how Leon used Swahili in the 70's, and Paul Simon doesn't get it til Graceland 40 yrs later. Just missed Leon last week, in Marin County, small winery venue, with other names. Other treats? Try: "Road Ladies", F. Zappa, and, "I Wish", Cold Blood.
I've always liked that vocal harmony ending, which creates a sudden & unexpected climax to the ending of the song. It wasn't until listening to your post just now, after listening to a fair amount of African music recently, that I realized the singing style here is African, which was evidently used so that it fit with the subject of the song. Pretty clever, since it was the cool bird sounds intro that first caught my attention in this song in 1972.
Leon is SO wonderful... brings back so many memories. Being 17, drinking Red Mountain Wine and tripping on assorted chemicals in Northern California in 1972.
Takes me right back (and makes me wonder how I survived!). Must have been for a reason, probably to tell all the young people I work with how awesome all these musical legends are... and amazingly, some of them listen!! Thanks for taking me back to rainy days and foggy minds!
He asked a zulu, "how do you say "a man is lost in the jungle?" The zulu said, "Zulu dont get lost in the jungle." The words at the end therefore mean, "A man has gone crazy. A man has lost his way."
If U live in Tulsa, Take a little road trip to Grand lake.. Leon had a place there, recording studio and all. Studio burned down (Wonder why, maybe some ash from a doob?) LOL.. Anyway, last I knew a Dr or DDS owned it and would let people tour the house. Man, Could U imagine the Music greats that have been there? I know The Beatles were there often and Clapton too. I would just like to walk around it and feel the vibes of a culture kinda gone but.. NEVER forgotten
@itsnotinthisbox I'm from Tulsa, too. Heard many a stories about the parties at Leon's place. They tore that house down years ago and built a new one there.
@giftsdirector No, I never cared for the picture either. But don't let that put you off this fantastic album. "Tight Rope", "This Masquerade" and "If the Shoe Fits" are just three of the great songs on "Carney". It's more than good. Enjoy!
The most generous humble musician I ever encountered. I can remember Leon listening to young guys tapes in airport departure lounge Sydney back in the 70's freely giving advice, when he could have been sitting back in the VIP room. I had never seen this before or since.
My mom had Carny on the record player a lot when I was a kid. I play it a lot now. One of the best records ever recorded. In fact, my mom, my wife and I saw Leon last night at a great small venue, and he is still one of my favorites, live or recorded. He should be in the R&R Hall of Fame...should have been there when it opened. Hopefully his new record with Elton John will bring him to those who don't know him.
Such a cool/funky/weird song! Have loved it since I were little. Leon is like Lowell George; mostly revered by other musicians and a core of fans who are just nuts for the talent.
@aasoder1: I love the connection with Lowell George. The two have been closest to my heart as far back as I can remember. No other music captivates me in the way Leon and Little Feat always do. I get SO excited everytime I hear them.
We still love him so much in Tulsa........ He went to my husbands high school and that high school has really turned out the famous talent! The percussion in this song is remarkable......

@220denyse Well, i'm 52 yrs old. My only kid, a daughter is 32. But i still feel 17 yrs. old... YES, LOL i've always wanted a son... (i have 2 granddaughters, both girls- 15 yrs old and 7 yrs old) The 15 yr. old emailed me, yesterday. This guy is legend. Saw him in Toledo in 2001 and it has stuck with me ever since. I was absolutely inspired to write poetry and into renaissance after that. He really is a muse in a sense. Very creative and beyond space and time as one of his albums was named, I believe. I guess you could call him the Merlin of Musicians, per se?
In the live version, he says he consulted zulu's about how to say "Lost in the jungle" in their language, and they told him, "Zulu's don't get lost in the jungle", thus the title, "Out In the Woods"! No doubt, total BS, but pure Leon! Somebody say Amen!
Yes Dear - Please refer to the second to last sentence of my comment. He did introduce the song this way on a live album - I used to own it, back in the 70's. Do you know what BS means, dear? I'm sure it's important to you that the rest of the world knows that you know about Zulu's. Please be assured - We know! It was supposed to be humorous - Not my humor - Leon's humor. Calm down. Get a life.
I was lucky enough to get to see him on my 45th birthday in Norman Okla. April 18, 2008. I wish he would come back this year to Okla. city but the closest he'll get is Tulsa for his Birthday Bash.
It's something about a crazy man, on his live album he tell's what it means. He said he ask a friend from Africa how to say "I'm lost in the jungle and his friend said there's no way to say that, they don't get lost in the jungle" It's really funny the way he says it. @send2meez - Yep. On the Carney album where this originally appeared, he said that he'd asked a friend how to say "lost in the woods" in Swahili, and that they had no such concept - so it translates to, "I am man gone crazy, wandering about the bush." That's my recollection - you could be right about Zulu vs. Swahili - tough call without the jacket - do you still have that?
@BerkLeeDrm : Band often claimed it meant "running through the forest silently". "It's German sounding gibberish, said by producer Mutt Lange during the recordings of the song, instead of the regular one, two, three, four"
Yeah he went there, and he asked how to say "im lost in the woods" and they couldnt answer, they said they had no word for lost, because they were always just living in the woods. so the little african chorus at the end is the closest they came to it and its actually saying something like "im wandering and have lost my mind"
he's a stranger in a strange land. come home to mama, baby.
