@AngryHatter Leon asked a Zulu friend how to say lost in the woods and Mr. Zulu said there is no way to say that because Zulu people do not get lost (in the woods). So it as close a translation as possible - who really cares 'cause it sounds cool.

Lucky me. Grew up in San Francisco Bay Area, 60's flower-child, saw more killer bands and artists than anyone not working at the Fillmore. This song was hard to find; have to see if Carnival is on CD. Kinda funny how Leon used Swahili in the 70's, and Paul Simon doesn't get it til Graceland 40 yrs later. Just missed Leon last week, in Marin County, small winery venue, with other names. Other treats? Try: "Road Ladies", F. Zappa, and, "I Wish", Cold Blood.

I've always liked that vocal harmony ending, which creates a sudden & unexpected climax to the ending of the song. It wasn't until listening to your post just now, after listening to a fair amount of African music recently, that I realized the singing style here is African, which was evidently used so that it fit with the subject of the song. Pretty clever, since it was the cool bird sounds intro that first caught my attention in this song in 1972.

Leon is SO wonderful... brings back so many memories. Being 17, drinking Red Mountain Wine and tripping on assorted chemicals in Northern California in 1972.

Takes me right back (and makes me wonder how I survived!). Must have been for a reason, probably to tell all the young people I work with how awesome all these musical legends are... and amazingly, some of them listen!! Thanks for taking me back to rainy days and foggy minds!

My mom had Carny on the record player a lot when I was a kid. I play it a lot now. One of the best records ever recorded. In fact, my mom, my wife and I saw Leon last night at a great small venue, and he is still one of my favorites, live or recorded. He should be in the R&R Hall of Fame...should have been there when it opened. Hopefully his new record with Elton John will bring him to those who don't know him.

This guy is legend. Saw him in Toledo in 2001 and it has stuck with me ever since. I was absolutely inspired to write poetry and into renaissance after that. He really is a muse in a sense. Very creative and beyond space and time as one of his albums was named, I believe. I guess you could call him the Merlin of Musicians, per se?

On the Carney album where this originally appeared, he said that he'd asked a friend how to say "lost in the woods" in Swahili, and that they had no such concept - so it translates to, "I am man gone crazy, wandering about the bush." That's my recollection - you could be right about Zulu vs. Swahili - tough call without the jacket - do you still have that?
