To ThaSchwab: I live on the Prairies in North America. Sibelius has captured the sense of a sunrise perfectly. The slow build up as the sky brightens, the breeze blowing into the rising sun, and at the end - the disk of the sun leaves the horizon, sunrise is over -- but it doesn't end (if you get my drift)
@S35Somua There is something in this painting suggestive of human sexuality. The two round sweeping curves in the middle ground. The lone, tall pine tree in the foreground creating a "crack" so to speak between the two aforementioned sweeping curves. The bluish areas in the background seem like spread legs with the sun's rays emanating a warm glow from the col below which there is somewhat of an unusual and unexpected "opening" in the crease of the slope where snow should have accumulated.
@rondophatton I believe it might have been a Canadian Group of Seven artist - possibly Franklin Carmichael - but I don't remember anymore, sorry. That could be completely off.
@rondophatton I have no clue. Just if you like such pictures, there are similar ones by the german paintress Gabriele Münter, she was the lover of Kandinsky for a long time, they lived in rural Bavaria (Murnau), and there are a few - slightly only! - similar pictures. Even from Kandinsky before he "got abstract".
A lovely music - I like this version much, also the Segerstam and many others. They all add something to this beautiful music with their ideas.
I listened but didn't notice any screwup at the ending that you describe, ThaSchwab.
It is a wonderful work, one of SIbelius' best outside of his symphonies. The latter portion of it, the so called Sunrise section, leaves you feeling absolutely blessed.
But this is not to minimize the value of the Nightride section, which almost achieves a stasis in the frantic movement when the contrasting lyrical idea comes in against it.

I feel like this relates more to the setting of a sleigh ride, but I wonder if I'm biased because of the mountain image. :) Regardless, great piece.

They screwed up the ending; the strings and timpani end early while the horns, bassoon and bass clarinet hold on. Just sayin'.
Good performance, tho
