I used to be REALLY scared of this part, when the words jump out at you with the intense music! I would be more scared of that than anything else in the movie xD considering I was like 7 or something? I was pretty freaked out.
@fROmTh3fUTURe Haha, I know exactly what you mean. I love this movie, and I think the soundtrack is it's biggest asset. That said, since I've seen the movie so many times, the part you mentioned beginning at 1:17 indeed seems a bit silly. It's so action packed... and essentially the audience is reading. LOL. It's brilliant, but I can't help but smile during it now since I'm familiar with the movie now. The first time I saw it though, I was on the edge of my seat. :)
@Ipso80 Me too, this film disturbed me when I saw this in theaters and the music really introduced the creepy atmosphere of the film. Can you believe this was back when Shyamalan had momentum going. After Village, he lost his touch for some reason.
M. Night and James Newton Howard make a fantastic team. One is a fabulous director with plenty of old-school sensibilities (keeping the monsters in the dark as symbolism, etc), and James Newton Howard is just one of the best composers working today.
James Newton Howard always delivers! I love his scores! They're easily the best thing in most M. Night Shyamalan movies. I can't wait to see what he does with The Last Airbender!

@mack503 i think is far more suspensul that Psycho's theme, don't get me wrong, Psycho's theme is chilling the violins nerve wracking but with this the danger is brought up ten fold...its just fucking amazing
This is one of the best opening credits I´ve ever seen. The music just freaks me out and I can´t stop listening to it. It is just a really scary music and the best thing is that is only based on classic horror movie music; it is not a horror movie music. That is just brilliant. James Newton Howard is a wonderful composer and M. Night Shyamalan is one of the best screenplayers and directors.
this main title fits so perfectly for a "chase scene" or soemthing like that. well, it does fit to the movie and makes it even more scary, but image this music to an alien or aliens chasing graham through the crop field... dude... wow ^^
I wonder how this movie was ignored at Oscar time. I thought at least Shyamalan should have been nominated for Original Screenplay, and Best Director, the suspense was unbearable at times, and brilliantly directed, and James should have been nominated. I mean if he was for The Village, why not Signs?
This movie scared me sh*tless... it's not even that bad after 5x, but I really have this fear of extra-terrestrials and weird animals like spiders and all...
0:36 makes me smile.

Love how the music suddenly quiets down when it shows James Newton Howard on the credits.
M. Night Shyamalan must have done it to acknowledge that it's his music that made half the film.

It sounds simple, yet is very, very smart. The whole score is based around three notes, basically.
