polygamy used to be practiced a long time ago. now, the church does not condone it.

mormons who do practice are from different SECTS of the church who have branched off from the mainstream church, made their own, and still claim the Mormon religion except they practice the old ways, not the current ones.

they are not considered true mormons.

this is like other churches. many churches claim christianity as their religion, but they all follow it different.
