@billgeyer Wow, so you got the engine with a bent crank, staighted it, then made "ajax start up", then the engine rusted and made the video "ajax speed up". Is that the engine's story?
Well yes, except engine was rusted when I got it. Didn't know the crankshaft was bent until I got it running, I was very dissapointed. But it all turned out good.
I have looked for a 115 for the last few years ,,I did find a dp230 in texas but it was to big for me..seeing this run sure makes me want to get up and go to the shop...I really enjoyed the video...I can totally understand why you like to see it run...
My old diesel tech instructor was thoroughly convinced that Ajax engines were four-stroke; I completely failed to convince him otherwise and it irked him at the possibility that he could be wrong.
The loud bang is the exhaust from the power stroke, the rest of the time it is just coasting along, the governor holding it back since there is no load for it to pull.
Awesome! I giggled like a kid when it started right up!! 1st thing that came to my mind also was a diesel type kick back during a hot start while your leg was in the flywheel - THAT would be FUN!
That is one beautiful engine!!! Can't believe how easy starting it is for you...I'm sure if it was put in front of me it would not go so good at first, how long did it take you two to get along so smooth!!!
There is a gas engine in a pumping station near me, 2 horizontal cylinders, about 3 foot stroke; it was a back up engine for a steam beam engine installed in a 12 storey building with 2 huge marine boilers about 8" diametre.
I used to drive my grandfather there to work on it but hes gone now.
Great video, beautiful engine, lovely sound.

I think in order to run one of these engines, you HAVE to be wearing coveralls.

is it backfiring whenever it makes a loud gunshot noise?

@teletubbykiller23
Hi 23,
The loud bang is the exhaust from the power stroke, the rest of the time it is just coasting along, the governor holding it back since there is no load for it to pull.

Nice machine -- Watch your arm or loose clothing, or it could bite.

I think I would disable the spark before I put my foot on the flywheel.

billgeyer 3 years ago
Wow...I would have thought it was a lot more then that.

Very Nice. Do you intend on running anything with a belt or other hookup. Sounds good I like the sound of the air rush. Phil

Hi Phil, I was going to run a generator, but haven't made any effort towards it. I just like watching it run.

Is it a side valve engine?
What is the fuel?

I've never seen a hit-and-miss Ajax before.
douro20 4 years ago
Well it's not really a hit & miss, but it runs that way without an appropriate load.
billgeyer 4 years ago
Hi tp, It is a 2 stroke, and was designed to run on natural gas, I run it on LP. Nice story about your grandfather.
Regards,
Bill
