what's the kata? how is it worked? how do you work it? so the kata or bunkai may change simply based on what works best for a person. then you begin to deal with the hidden secrets of a kata and the four different levels. but all in all i dont think it's fair to say someone doesn't know or understand bunkai just because it's not how YOU work it. the bottom line and main question is DOES IT WORK? the real test comes when you have to truly defend your life in some place other than the dojo.
I think you should approach Kata Bunkai like a scientist would approach any study. Skepticism, keen observation, rigorous testing, peer group approval, and most importantly, make predictions using the theory. Even when you've found a sound theory, still remain skeptical of it and continue testing and researching.
I debated myself for quite sometime. I don't know if i totally agree with approaching kata with skepticism. I feel it should be approached with an open mind while still trying to grasp a clear understanding of application so that it can work for you. I do agree with "keen observation" and "rigorous testing." Not so much "peer approval" because it may work for me but not for him. And should I change it because he doesn't like it.
guys you have been having an extraordinarily interesting debate. i've had to share it with my fellow karate ka and sensei. i think what everyone must understand is that all different styles have different understandings for any given kata. bunkai is meant to display the understanding of a technique. no matter what it is and you have to understand that there are levels of bunkai. and in understanding kata or technique period there are three questions you must ask...
I agree that Bunkai is meant to display an understanding of a technique, and the practicality of a technique. Different levels? If by different levels, you are suggesting that all applications invented using this Kata are therefore valid, I would have to disagree. Just because, as in this video, these techniques seem to work does not mean they are practical or the proper use for that particular technique. Why is his right(our left) arm up in the air doing nothing? Getting ready is not a response.
these forms. But from what i can see he is preparing to make his strike after the block which makes perfect sense when you apply it to fighting application because you always wanna set your techniques up three or four in advance. And actually "getting ready" is a response whether it be internal or physical. You are preparing yourself. I approach kata from a fighting stand point. Everything in kata makes sense to me once i understand it.
I would agree with you here because they are not even doing Yondan. Youtube, seems flooded with LOTS of really really poor Bunkai. I don't think out of all the videos I've seen, that any of them have anything worthy of being concidered Bunkai.
this is a possible senario for the opening move of YONDAN.just because the knife hand is not in the kata doesnt mean he cant add it in a fight.he is simply using his initiative as left hand in in a good position to strike to the neck.
the knife hand does not look powerful because he pulls the power out at the last minute maybe to be polite to his opponent as there is important arteries running up the neck to supply the brain with blood.
he doesnt do backstance in wado this stance is called side facing cat stance.so what do u want him to do turn around 180 and block and then get hit on the back of the head because his apponent is still standing...fukazawa is an 8th dan and has been training in karate and other japanese arts all his life...please share with us a possible bunkai for the opening move of yondan because ive a snicking suspicion that your not qualified to comment on this mans technique!!
backstance is simply suggesting the placement of weight. Nonetheless, first I would like you to explain to me how being an 8th Dan makes your bunkai correct?
Then I would like you to tell me WHY this first technique has to be a block. Why then does it not have closed fist? Why not in Horsestance? Why not a block with strike in a fronstance? Why not closed fist on a block and an open handed strike to the face?
The problem I have with this Bunkai, is that it is not a Bunkai because it is not an understanding of the Kata movements. If your Bunkai does not function strictly to the movement in the kata, then you have not done a proper Bunkai.
I only suggest you question OFTEN bunkai such as this inorder to find new and better bunkai.
I am not at liberty to pass on Bunkai over a message board. But I assure you that my Bunkai explain the reasons for open hands, backstance, 180 degree turns.
i pointed out fukazawa was an 8th dan and trained all his life just to point to his compedence.i understand that most bunkai is taken from the exact kata moves only but in my opinion an practise some adaptations can be considered.if somebody atacked me and i instintively lifted my arms similar to the opening moves in yondan to block(and yes only one possible application),my first reaction MIGHT be to strike with other hand.
after i would put my movement down to preacticing yondan over and over.if u look at the bunkai from karate masters from all different styles a lot of them add in a knife hand strike into its bunkai.look its not to much of a problem if it got some on out of trouble great job done.i just dont agree that this is poor bunkai.fukazawa's main forte is bunkai(has many worthy dvds on this subject alone)and has spent much time studying kata applications with many people from different styles.
Well, As I said, this may be affective. You may throw your hands up during an attack but that is more so a lack of practice and not a bunkai. This is not Heian Yondan Bunkai is all I am asserting, which is evident even in what you are suggesting. The Heian Yondan Bunkai would have been enough without alteration, and there are a multitude of more suitable applications for an instance such as this which are more efficient and by this point should be instinctive.

Allow me to explain why I feel this is not a proper Bunkai for Yondan like the title suggests.
- Bunkai is the understanding of the kata movement. This is bunkai for a kata he has made up, because it is not Yondan.
- Secondly, he is not even doing backstance NOR does he demonstrate at all an understanding for why you do Backstance instead of any other stance.
This bunkai is only a demonstration of a lack on understanding of the Yondan kata. Attack might be affective, but it is not Yondan.
Gwisss 3 years ago
in wado they dont practice backstance in the opening moves of yondan.

Is this Wado karate? and Wado Bunkai?
Gwisss 3 years ago
yes its wado

So why does he do a backstance with his first Yondan technique? Either way, this is a poor Bunkai.
