  • Does anyone know how the music played throughout this documentary is called? Is it baroque?

  • This documentary is so biased against Cromwell. Its like watching X Factor

I thought is was supposed to be a history documentary. Its more like propaganda.

Sponsered by supporters of His Majesties ass.

    Quote by the presenter

"No its not the confession of a homicidal manic (Cromwell), but it is the confession of a narrow minded pig headed protestant bigot and imperialist bigot"

This kind of opinion has no place in a real history documentary.

  • @Jdjohnjd Read Tom Reilly's book, An honourable enemy if you want the other point of view. Also I would say O Siochru is worse overall for his slagging off of Cromwell, Schama just says over the top ear-catching accusations to add to the drama, he is sympathetic in some senses....

  • @Jdjohnjd Real history documentary? Schama is a renowned historian and you are some guy with a Youtube account. So I think his opinion has a place.

  • The comments at 6:14 are the exact reasons Cromwell was a great leader and revolutionary. I love it. Pigheaded, bigoted and other adjective are what America and England needs against the Socialist and Muslims that dominate our nations.

  • Cromwell considered a moderate, what are you on about. He was a tyrant. What the English did in Ireland will never be forgotten. Prosecution of any religion is wrong. I know and respect many protestants but the fact is it is a religion that was made up by power hungry man. Getting back to the point Cromwell's statue should be taken down. The Glorious revolution is a complete lie, there was plenty of bloodshed.

  • I can't beleive people worship Cromwell even though he was a genocidal maniac...

  • @ExquisiteDoom There's a lot more to Oliver Cromwell than that which this rather biased documentary goes on and on about. One does not judge yesteryear by presently held standards.

  • @MrMostevilgenius I don't think it's biased against Cromwell too much, the reporter even goes out of his way to say he freed the jews in that they were allowed to worship.

And i will judge someone who greatly aided in eliminating somewhere around 12% of the irish population; just because in his eyes they were barbarians. Makes me wonder who the barbarian is.

Heads of states are all maniacs but this one stands out more than most in my eyes.

  • @ExquisiteDoom I wholeheartedly agree with you on heads of state being maniacs, I suppose it somewhat comes with the job. On Cromwell though, I feel he's being portrayed too often [and I agree this documentary is amongst the 'kinder' ones] as nothing but a religious madman. True, by our present-day standards he would be dragged in front of the international court and sentenced to life-long imprisonment without a doubt. But... He was a child of his time, and those times were rather different [1]

  • [2] The actions of Cromwell in Ireland were harsh, by any standards, but one must see the issue in context with the world at the time. The Catholic powers of the day had it coming after a century of open war against any and all they deemed a protestant. The stakes were simply too high to take risks. I suppose it's a little easier to turn to cruelty when the result of failure is being burned alive. I would argue, in that regard, Cromwell might be considered a moderate.

  • @MrMostevilgenius Fair enough

  • Cromwell is legendary, one of the greatest figures in brittish history

  • LOL Tell me what you really think about Oliver Cromwell, Glasses Guy. XD

  • Ha-Ha-Ha, Cromwell must be the only character in British History, to this very day, who is hated equally, by the English, the Irish, and the Scots.

  • @locheelad2 yup... that makes him politician alright :3

  • Typical lesser of the two evils scenario , neither cared for the people but what the people could do to preserve their ideals and interests.

  • Please get guns, knives and settle your disputes...like civilized people

  • ok, break it up, btw, this narrator seems biased

  • may the curse of cromwell be upon you.

the british should feel the same shame at cromwell that the germans are made to feel of hitler.you can the brits condemn germany when they commited genocide

of the irish.evil brits.up the ra

  • No they shouldnt, as the German population never presented much in the way of a concerted opposition to the nazi state and its barely hidden policies.

The British did, by virtue of the fact that thousands of them died in the fight against Cromwell in the civil war.

As for the IRA-you much be sad that they were crippled, forced to surrender, and only escaped anihilation due to the elightened decision by Britain to bring them into the process.

Still, Ulster is British, so the scumlost.

  • we've had to wait 700 years we will wait another 700 but WE WILl HAVE IT BACK

You are like most Americans when talking about Anglo Irish history-you spout your own half assed musings based on the semi coherent rantings of some Irish American propogandist (who was probably busy collecting funds for the IRS-giving mockery to the US govts stated oposition to terrorism), in an Irish bar on st patricks day.

  • the french belong everywhere

  • the french belong exactly where they can always be found-running away from a fight whilst real men die on their behalf

  • "we"........YOU REALLY NEED TO LEARN ENGLISH. YOU, THE FRENCH, DID NOTHING-YOU SURRENDERED TO GERMANY-YOU DIDNT FIGHT, YOU DIDNT DIE FOR EUROPE-YOU SURRENDERED BECAUSE YOU WERE COWARDS AND LET THE USA AND THE UK DIE FOR YOU-THAT IS YOUR ETERNAL SHAME. FRANCE WILL NEVER RECOVER. FRANCE WILL NEVER MEAN ANYTHING TO THE WORLD

  • and all you ever gave the world was cowardice, venerial disease and women who dont shave their arm pits.

  • In America only the successful writer is important, in France all writers are important, in England no writer is important, and in Australia you have to explain what a writer is."-Geoffrey Cottrell

  • The best of America drifts to Paris. The American in Paris is the best American. It is more fun for an intelligent person to live in an intelligent country. France has the only two things toward which we drift as we grow older—intelligence and good manners.-F. Scott Fitzgerald

  • 1) do british women shave?

i know you fdont brush your teeth

2)how are the british more brave in what way give an example

    3) you dont have stds in the UK?

  • Prior to the invention of modern medicines, sexually transmitted diseases were generally incurable, and treatment was limited to treating the symptoms of the disease. The first voluntary hospital for venereal diseases was founded in 1746 at London Lock Hospital. Treatment was not always voluntary: in the second half of the 19th century, the Contagious Diseases Act was used to arrest suspected prostitutes.

do some research you have the skakkiest whores in the world

  • our chips are bettre than your fries. and beer is supposed to be room temperature. that nats piss you people call beer is terrible.

  • The Free French Forces (French: Forces Françaises Libres, FFL) were French fighters in World War II who decided to continue fighting against Axis forces after the surrender of France and subsequent German occupation

De Gaulle was tried in absentia in Vichy France and sentenced to death for treason; he, on the other hand, regarded himself as the last remaining member of the legitimate Reynaud government able to exercise power, seeing the rise to power of Pétain as an unconstitutional coup

  • British proxies.

Today we were unlucky, but remember we only have to be lucky once. You will have to be lucky always. Give Ireland peace and there will be no more war."

    on the other hand

starting around 1:49 I just start to laugh and feel embarrassed for that poor guy. then it gets worse after 1:58. Thanks again

  • This is what Wikipedia says anyway: "Its (the "Red Coat" Uniform) official history begins on February 1645, when the Parliament of England passed the New Model Army ordinance".

  • Cromwell was a double edged sword. He turned into what he tryed to stand against.

  • only to a degree-it is to him that britain owes its enduring parliamentary democracy and its totally limited monarchy

  • Its to William of Orange 30 years later we owe it all.

  • Only too a degree-the precedents William had to accept were established by cromwell

  • This guy says "Whore" in at least three of four segments of each episode! LOL! I think that he just likes the way the word rolls of his tongue! LOL!

  • Didn't the British Army start wearing the Red Coat uniform right before the events of his video in the Civil War between the Royals and the Parlimentarians? Seriously, I don't know. I'm in the other side of the pond so, I'm afraid that was skimmed over at best while I was in school! LOL!

  • No this was well before the Red Coats!

  • Would it maybe be the origins of the red coated uniform that we came to know in the late 1700's though? I mean, everything has to start somewhere! LOL! Of course, it would seem rather odd that the Royals would have an army that wore the uniform of the army that beat them in the Civil War. Not to mention that a number of Royals have SERVED in the red uniform over the last few centuries too! LOL !

  • Maybe, do some net reserch. You maybe onto something.

Theres an old folk song called 'Red & Gold' about the New Model Army of Cromwell. Due to the Red & Gold uniform they wore.

  • I'm going to have to look into that one. I've always sort of wondered when the uniform actually came in to use. At least here in the States, we all tend to associate the uniform with the U.K. so, it's one of those things that kind of peaks my interest.

  • well, as is most non american history from my experience of american history education-thank god i left america before the brain washing was complete

  • and how exactly were you brainwashed

    limey?

  • Proud to be english i'm Anglo-American.

  • @Liam123 America needs strong leaders with the character of Andrew Jackson, Oliver Cromwell, Abe Lincoln, and others with strong people. We need to quit going down the road into the existence of a wimpy quasi-socialist republic. America is better then that, way better. So is England!

  • Thomas Lilburn was one of this countrys greatest men, he even influenced the american revolution
