"No its not the confession of a homicidal manic (Cromwell), but it is the confession of a narrow minded pig headed protestant bigot and imperialist bigot"
This kind of opinion has no place in a real history documentary.
@Jdjohnjd Read Tom Reilly's book, An honourable enemy if you want the other point of view. Also I would say O Siochru is worse overall for his slagging off of Cromwell, Schama just says over the top ear-catching accusations to add to the drama, he is sympathetic in some senses....
The comments at 6:14 are the exact reasons Cromwell was a great leader and revolutionary. I love it. Pigheaded, bigoted and other adjective are what America and England needs against the Socialist and Muslims that dominate our nations.
Cromwell considered a moderate, what are you on about. He was a tyrant. What the English did in Ireland will never be forgotten. Prosecution of any religion is wrong. I know and respect many protestants but the fact is it is a religion that was made up by power hungry man. Getting back to the point Cromwell's statue should be taken down. The Glorious revolution is a complete lie, there was plenty of bloodshed.
@ExquisiteDoom There's a lot more to Oliver Cromwell than that which this rather biased documentary goes on and on about. One does not judge yesteryear by presently held standards.
@MrMostevilgenius I don't think it's biased against Cromwell too much, the reporter even goes out of his way to say he freed the jews in that they were allowed to worship.
And i will judge someone who greatly aided in eliminating somewhere around 12% of the irish population; just because in his eyes they were barbarians. Makes me wonder who the barbarian is.
Heads of states are all maniacs but this one stands out more than most in my eyes.
@ExquisiteDoom I wholeheartedly agree with you on heads of state being maniacs, I suppose it somewhat comes with the job. On Cromwell though, I feel he's being portrayed too often [and I agree this documentary is amongst the 'kinder' ones] as nothing but a religious madman. True, by our present-day standards he would be dragged in front of the international court and sentenced to life-long imprisonment without a doubt. But... He was a child of his time, and those times were rather different [1]
[2] The actions of Cromwell in Ireland were harsh, by any standards, but one must see the issue in context with the world at the time. The Catholic powers of the day had it coming after a century of open war against any and all they deemed a protestant. The stakes were simply too high to take risks. I suppose it's a little easier to turn to cruelty when the result of failure is being burned alive. I would argue, in that regard, Cromwell might be considered a moderate.
the british should feel the same shame at cromwell that the germans are made to feel of hitler.you can the brits condemn germany when they commited genocide
No they shouldnt, as the German population never presented much in the way of a concerted opposition to the nazi state and its barely hidden policies.
The British did, by virtue of the fact that thousands of them died in the fight against Cromwell in the civil war.
As for the IRA-you much be sad that they were crippled, forced to surrender, and only escaped anihilation due to the elightened decision by Britain to bring them into the process.
You are like most Americans when talking about Anglo Irish history-you spout your own half assed musings based on the semi coherent rantings of some Irish American propogandist (who was probably busy collecting funds for the IRS-giving mockery to the US govts stated oposition to terrorism), in an Irish bar on st patricks day.

Prior to the invention of modern medicines, sexually transmitted diseases were generally incurable, and treatment was limited to treating the symptoms of the disease. The first voluntary hospital for venereal diseases was founded in 1746 at London Lock Hospital. Treatment was not always voluntary: in the second half of the 19th century, the Contagious Diseases Act was used to arrest suspected prostitutes.

De Gaulle was tried in absentia in Vichy France and sentenced to death for treason; he, on the other hand, regarded himself as the last remaining member of the legitimate Reynaud government able to exercise power, seeing the rise to power of Pétain as an unconstitutional coup

This is what Wikipedia says anyway: "Its (the "Red Coat" Uniform) official history begins on February 1645, when the Parliament of England passed the New Model Army ordinance".
Didn't the British Army start wearing the Red Coat uniform right before the events of his video in the Civil War between the Royals and the Parlimentarians? Seriously, I don't know. I'm in the other side of the pond so, I'm afraid that was skimmed over at best while I was in school! LOL!
Would it maybe be the origins of the red coated uniform that we came to know in the late 1700's though? I mean, everything has to start somewhere! LOL! Of course, it would seem rather odd that the Royals would have an army that wore the uniform of the army that beat them in the Civil War. Not to mention that a number of Royals have SERVED in the red uniform over the last few centuries too! LOL !
I'm going to have to look into that one. I've always sort of wondered when the uniform actually came in to use. At least here in the States, we all tend to associate the uniform with the U.K. so, it's one of those things that kind of peaks my interest.
@Liam123 America needs strong leaders with the character of Andrew Jackson, Oliver Cromwell, Abe Lincoln, and others with strong people. We need to quit going down the road into the existence of a wimpy quasi-socialist republic. America is better then that, way better. So is England!
