  • Lol It Sounds So Much Like Taxman, This Could Not Be A Coincidence. Lol

  • nothing sounds like an SG. Wonderful "crunchy" sound.

  • Wondering if that hollowbody Bruce is playing is.. Epiphone or Gibson..? Lovely playing by both guys.

  • @666eggsiseggs its an epiphone rivoli

  • yeah paul's even playing the same cherry red gibson SG that george used on paperback writer! AWESOME!

  • "Good Artists Borrow, Great Artists Steal"

    -Pablo Picasso.

    'nuff said.

  • @thedizzies1 Bullshit.

  • is this a rip off ,of taxman,by the beatles

  • Awesome stuff! Loving the Modfather John William Weller! What an absolute classic!

  • foxton fucked the bass line at the beggining lol!!!!!!!!!

  • "Fridays" was the poor man's SNL, but they were way ahead regarding the musical acts.

  • ich kannte nur start von den bb, das hier ist grossartig!!

  • THIS SONG IS DIRECTLY RIPPED OFF FROM TAXMAN BY THE BEATLES!!!!!!!

  • @onlyjoetee Thanks genius. And?????/

  • @NigelDoes whatdyumeanand??obviously you had no idea?hahahaha fucking idiot..

  • @onlyjoetee That's your reponse? How old are you?

  • @onlyjoetee If you had a brain in your head you would realize that tons of songs are ripped off from other songs. You seem either really young or incredibly naive. Either way you don't seem too terribly bright. :-) Stay in school kid.

  • @NigelDoes and that makes it ok does it?to rip off a song THIS blatantly?and you didnt even know till i told you..you fool..LOL

  • @onlyjoetee I've know it since the song came out you muppet. What are you 12?

  • @NigelDoes and you think thats ok,do you?to steal somebody else's work THIS blatantly?and im the muppet.Must be terrible to have you as a friend, would not be able to turn your back on you for a second!you would steal anything and think its ok!!This thread actually shows your character..

  • @NigelDoes you can tell a lot about a mans character from his attitude to things that are blatantly wrong.Donald Trump used to say, before i do business with a man,i go play golf with him, just to see his character,if he cheats, moves the ball etc.your character is plain to see...i pity anybody who has anything to do with you on any level at all!!!!

  • @NigelDoes if what is wrong,is right and justifiable to you, then what does that say about you???????you're probably the type who thinks Hitler was just "misunderstood"..right?....have a word with yourself..

  • @onlyjoetee hahahaha. Oh man I love how worked up you've become over this. :-) Nearly every rock song you have ever heard has been in some way ripped off from an earlier song. Are you truly thick enough to not realize this? The best question you can probably ask yourself is this.....why are you so angry? Is it your goal in life to stay angry about the fact that one of your countrymen shamelessly stole a guitar riff from from another one of your countrymen? :-)

  • @NigelDoes examine your own character, based on your reaction to this flagrant plagiarism very carefully......

  • @onlyjoetee Wow You really are a piece of work. There's an enormous human tragedy going on in Japan right now but you can't bother with that because Paul Weller is the devil.......Says a lot. Sadly.

  • @NigelDoes dont deflect,we're talking about YOU,YOUR character..ALL crime and dishonesty flourishes in this world because of people like YOU,do you realize that!!!you see wrong, and say OH its ok,thats what evryone does, thats just how it is etc.right?never mind Japan, start with the man in the mirror!!

  • @onlyjoetee lol You're killing me here! You know what you're right! I'm the antichrist for not thinking Paul Weller should be publicly hanged for ripping off Taxman. :-)Do you seriously have nothing else going on in your life to spend as much time as you obviously being angry over nicked guitar riffs? :-) Is that really the biggest issue in your insular, pathetic little world? Try getting out of the house bro. What time is it in the UK? Why are you even up? lol

  • @NigelDoes again, you're deflecting. This is the same pathetic rap that people like you always use,Oh there are bigger things to worry about etc.an entire ocean starts with one little drop. You think this wrong should be overlooked, its no big deal, its "only" a guitar riff etc.so what next?what do you overlook next?plagiarism today?what tomorrrow?rape?murder?what?check yourself sir!!!all it takes for ANY bad to flourish,is for goodmen to do/say nothing.Today a drop,2moro an ocean!Think, reflect!

  • @NigelDoes your son steals a sweet, you dont chastize him,oh its only a sweet, then he steals a wallet, then a car, then burglarizes a house,at what point do you chastize him?what point in that link would it NOT be ok!get it?

  • Easily the tightest outfit I have ever seen, in Peterborough, and only three of em. Amazing memories.

  • Ain't that one of the best fackin bass lines ever??

  • @freddo27 it is but it's Paul McCartney's! Weller just wanted to see what he could do with it! both brilliant songs anyway!

  • @rcd1875 He did well with it, I think. Bruce Foxton really nailed it. Which Beatles' number is that bassline from?

  • @freddo27 Taxman, it's not quite as prominent as it is in Start though!

  • @freddo27

    It's a rip off.

  • @Raggamechababy Well, a cover is a rip off, and even the Beatles did covers. This isn't a cover, but a 'take' on a Beatles number's catchy hook, I'd say. Just an opinion, somewhat biased by my love of the Jam.

  • @freddo27 Aye, that's fair enough. But I think what takes it into the realm of ripping off is that it's not a cover - with a cover you're acknowledging the origin of the tune by, well, playing the entirety of the tune. But by copying a very original groove and building a different tune out of it, you're benefitting from someone else's creativity - ie: ripping them off. Sorry, that sounds well preachy! BUT I do agree, the Jam are ace, and this is a tight performance. Actually, I take it all back.

  • OMG this is brilliant! Such a cheeky take on the Beatles - who else would have the nerve to do that and make it their own? Still sounds totally fresh today. And that SG thru the Marshalls......inspiring. :)

  • @bobyoung53 Well I was born in the 50s Bob so you ain't cool. Playing music is about fun not being a blowhard on youtube such as you are.

  • @bobyoung53 Man there is nothing more boorish than some never has been musician such as you rambling on about your crap experiences playing at Chuckie Cheese.

  • @bobyoung53 Thanx for the history lesson. I probably heard the blues live before you were on the planet. I meant tribute in a way you're over sized ego can't process.

  • So Weller ripped this off - so what!

  • The Jam,was my life.

  • Bent forward like that, with the glasses on, Weller reminds me of the bloke from Talk Talk.

  • Paul was influenced by Soul, The Who, Ray Davies, Beatles and early punk bands, just like virtually every band or artist thats been are influenced by someone previous.

Oasis, Blur, OCS and the Artic Monkeys were very influenced by The Jam and Paul Weller.

  • @bobyoung53 Blues musicians do the same lifting of riffs from one another. It's called a tribute Skeezix.

  • This show, 'Fridays', tried to be ABC's answer to NBC's 'Saturday Night Live'. It wasn't, but I remember watching The Jam do this and burn it up. The show starred Michael Richards, later of Seinfeld and racism remarks.

  • damn, weller with an sg, neat

  • Man ! That was shit hot ! Some tone PW was getting out that Gibson SG ! Great wee solo !! Cool !

  • why the fuck paul ,why....we could still be listening to tunes like this...............!

  • Sounds alot like Taxman by The Beatles off of Revolver. You can see how much The Beatles influenced these guys and many others.

  • TAXMAN!!!!! I prefer this song though.

  • You can see how much influence they had on Oasis from this clip

  • @DeepSpaceDesign well not this specific song cause this is exactly like taxman by the beatles

  • Comment removed

  • Jam gets my heart beating, been listening toJam/Style Council/Weller for 30 years - never gets stale! Still on the favourite list!

  • @TheTrossi91 The Style Council were utter dross imo. The Jam would have been nothing without Bruce and Rick. Saw 'em live at the Manchester Apollo in 1977/78 on the All Mod Cons tour. Weller was a gent. We waited in the afternoon for them to arrive and he invited me and a pal to come in and listen to them warm up. He then offered us the tickets for the night time gig but we told him that we already had some. He autographed them for us tho.

  • Listen out for a rare mistake by Bruce as he's changing to the D riff at the begining, just as Weller sings "nor I to Know yours"....nice clip not seen before

  • great underrated cut - period!

  • Fridays had some great bands on.They would let the bands play 3 sometimes 4 songs. When it was cut to a hour show on repeats only showed 2 songs I remember seeing The Stray Cats on it live for the first time on it and I was hooked Rockabilly for life.(yeah I know it's the "oppisite" of these guys) but I like all GOOD music And The Clash & The Jam were THE BEST of the originals from the U.K.

  • Check out The Moons (just click on our user name)

Paul played on their debut album 'Life on earth' out now

    A new movement is coming!

  • TAXMAN!

  • @shareschannel yea and no lawsuits a aha aahaa

  • Pedantry alert! George Harrison used his 1961 SG for the 'Revolver' album, and as noted above, this song pays a rather, um, literal homage to the album's opening track, which was composed and sung by Harrison. Ironically, perhaps, the dramatic solo ('referenced' here) was actually developed and played by McCartney (itself an homage to Jeff Beck's solo on the Yardbirds 'Shapes of things', released in the UK about 2 months before the Beatles started 'Revolver').

    Love this song. A cracker!

  • To me this will forever just remind me of the beatles song tax man, it sounds identical "apart from melody line" and "in my view" tax man is a better song

  • Oh Yeah!!!

  • Great song & great decade .. A question to all you bass players out there : the bass sounds very sixties to me, is this because he's playing on a semi-acoustic ?

  • Yes. Sounds like flatwound strings to me as well. Also not forgetting the riff is very reminiscent of the first track of an album by a certain band from 1966! Very cool bass. And player. Love yer werk Brooce!!

  • Amazing clip - apparantly Weller wrote this about his own frustrations at trying to communicate (normally) with people, now he that was famous..also, reckon he's a closet Tony Iommi fan with that SG!!! LoL

  • @MrChubbleyWarner - mmm .. playing an SG does not necessarily mean you are are a fan of Mr Iommi - I think there is a world of difference in their styles - also the song is nothing at all about Pauls frustrations - its actually a song about James Bond.

  • @deanok1960 - I meant the Tony Iommi ref VERY 'tounge in cheek' - I would imagine PW hated Black Sabbath with a passion! - Also, where did you hear about the James Bond thing? I picked up my info from the Paolo Hewitt book 'Paul Weller - The Changing Man'

  • I heard the James Bond thing in an interview he did yonks ago - Paul is often quite oblique about the meaning of his song (sometimes I think he makes up different stories for fun) - I prefer the Ricky any day LOL

  • yeah, he don't look 'right' with the SG - plays it well enough though! - I suppose we'll have to leave the meaning of 'Start' open to interpretation...Cheers : )

  • very rare??? its the tube show they did... the last TV apperance ever by the jam...its on a dvd now........

  • markusreeves..its not the tube from dec 1982 its from 'Fridays live' a programe in the usa and its july 1980 when the single "Start" was released

  • yeah i kinda jumped the gun there... started my comm b4 id properly watched the clip DUH ... weller didnt have the glasses on during the tube set

  • ..or play the '63 SG either....

  • @markusreeves yep.. you are wrong.. this is 1980 and defo not their last show from 1982.

  • taxman

  • Yes but not "sampled" as they are these days....God I sound like me Dad for christ sake.......;-)

  • without doubt

  • damn i want the 61 reissue

  • check out tales of george if you like these guys you will not be dissapointed!

  • love it....

  • My band used to play this one. It was one of our faves. Excellent band.

  • Brilliant stuff, first time I ever saw The Jam was on this show ("Fridays") ABC TV Summer 1980! Weller's George Harrison '66 look is complete with the Gibson SG, though I too, at the time, was wondering "What no Rickenbacker?". But he played one on their next number on the show ("Private Hell").

  • didn't realise Weller played an SG back in The Jam days. thought that was just a solo career thing.

  • where is the rick?

  • You all should know that musical quality is ineffable.

  • sounds like taxman at the start

  • It is, They took the bass line and made a much better song out of it :P Sadly ruined by Pauls horrible guitar in this particular video.

  • No.They made a WORSE song

  • Taxman sucks, Paul did a lot more with it.

  • well i appreciate your opinion lets just agree to disagree

  • I'm cool with that

  • Comment removed

  • Nice SG.

  • I love this song! amazing delivery by your man Weller in the face of the slight detunage of his strings

  • One of my favorite Jam songs. I've been a fan since the early 80s & The Jam is still the 1st CD I listen to in my car. Amazing!

  • top track but i can understand in a weird way georgy harrisons problem!!!

  • This was So unbelievably exciting to see as a 12 year old!

Way better than most American music.....

  • anthonythirteen I think you'll find that the Beatles were very original in their music. The album which this song came from "Revolver" and Sgt Peppers are particularly regarded as pioneering.

  • And what You Give Is what You get!

  • Where did the Beatles get the Taxman riff from? All music is to a degree derivative. This is distinctively different from Taxman to be its own song.

  • gawd, i was there in the audience!!! how funny!!!! thankx for posting.

  • It's Taxman. Does that matter? It's not like any other groupOasis has ever done that.

  • Yeh but at least they changed the key. Still a great song, love it.

  • legal.

  • It's hardly all that different from Taxman.

  • That Gibson SG that Weller is using for this song, also reminds one of the Beatles (esp. Harrison) circa 1966.

  • UMMMM... 29 years ago! It just occurred to me!

  • Taxman - only better. Killer bassline. Bruce Foxton is legend.

  • Totally different song. Listen to the making

  • one of my all time favorites ... thanks for posting!

  • tHE JaM....R.I.P...1977-1982..."and as i was standing by the edge, i could see the faces of those who led pissing thereselves laughing....!!!!

  • cause tonight we burn responsibility in the fire.

  • Absolutely awesome - the Taxman thing is understandable.. its the "cycle" of music in action.......makes your backbone shudder and puts a smile on your face....

  • its been used by beck also for the new pollution i think - its simply a good piece of music that lends itself to other bands. never a rip off, these bands are to talented to rely on just ripping the beatles off

  • WTF? Where's the Rickenbacker?!! An SG? surely not!

  • dont thumbs down the bloke D:

different guitars for different sounds mate. obviously get ehat he wanted out of the ric which is a shame cause its a cracking guitar haha

  • I wasn't giving an opinion! The SG is cool too! I was just shoked! lol!

  • Thank you. And thank Michael Richards and his toy soldiers!

  • HardCoreSandy

Spot on; The Jam are great but this is a direct rip-off of Taxman (one of the Beatles least creditable songs).

  • pretty cool song

other earlier versions are a little better.

  • this sounds like Taxman by The Beatles

  • same baseline.

  • Same bassline, guitar rhythm and almost identical guitar solo.

  • If you listen good it is a different song.....

  • what is WRONG with taking any piece and using it to make a point.

  • You also have to appreciate how hard it must have been for Bruce to sing with such a complex bass line!!

  • Good call!, I can play this, great fun! . . . but can I nowt do his vocals whilst playing!

  • Thanks so much for this! We saw this episode when it originally aired. Seems just like yesterday.....

  • ils me manque

  • Obvious Taxman homage, but so what???!!! this is one of the most kick-ass songs of all time - not to mention that guit. solo.....

  • this song is just a rip of taxman...

  • So what, it's a solid interpretation.

  • no chance, it plaegerism. They should come up with something at least half original.

  • It's better than Taxman.

  • Yes! FAr better!

  • The man was a genius with the jam.

  • I miss the JAM

  • WHO EVER TAUGHT HIM HOW TO PLAY?? he was genious.. weller's style .. its amazing..

  • SECRET AFFAIR pIay their 30th anniversary show @ The Camden Centre, Kings Cross, Iondon, May 30th, 2009.

    tickets thru see tickets

  • it is better than taxman

    what about lennons glasses?

  • nice guitar play!

  • Paul looks like Damon Albarn here))

  • no. damon albairn looks like paul weller did on american bandstand in 1980

  • Great song

  • Secret Affair pIay their onIy Iondon show @ The Camden Centre, Kings X, May 30

    tickets thru see tickets

  • i like bruce's bass guitar. They got this from the beatles Taxman but this is better

  • tighter than a camels ass in a sandstorm!

  • i've never heard another band as tight as the jam, ever

  • This song is one of the coolest tunes. I have listened to it for over 25 years and still love it. I actually like it much better than Tax Man.

  • I think he picked the old cherry SG to go with the granny psychedelic shades - it was the guitar George Harrison played on Revolver and was filmed playing in the paperback writer / rain promo, which weller was well aware of - blimey try saying that after a few pints.

  • lol genius comment.

  • Sounds good but odd to see Weller playing a Gibson SG.

  • True...but hey Townshend played Ricks and then moved to an SG as well...like father like son

  • when i see Weller in this video it makes me think of OCS's Steve Cradock. Love this song

  • This band were inspirational to a whole new generation of groups in the 1980's.

  • dont you lot bother reading previous comments ? will you all stop going on about taxman . let it go for wellers sake already !

  • Bruce Foxton took 'taxman's' bass line and made it 100 times better!! ;)

    so fuck them all!!!! :)

  • blow up!

  • psych out !

  • boo!

  • the marshalls are props... peavy bandit like the tube video's... guitar sounds like a wasp.

  • SUCH greatness.

  • Excellent clip, mate. They were so tight live.

  • spot on mate they were so tight

  • Anybody questioning The Jam needs their head looking at

  • To any of the bods on here cunting the jam live...look u donuts,if you wanted to see note for note boring shit in them days u should have gone to see duran duran. the jam were what it was all about live...aggression,passion,fuk ups, jumping about, outta tune sometimes, sweaty as fuck. No band can ever match a Jam gig, absolutely fucking electric. As for seeing some boring statues live replicating their studio sound perfectly , stick that right up ya fat arse.

  • Dogfather..

And of that so called HUGE catalogue how many... other than to Weller obsessed beehive wigs like yourself, are remembered in Musical culture? Seriously? I Love the Jam but If you think Weller will outlive the Beatles and the Stones in ANY respect than God bless your little musical mid life crisis.

  • your as boring as rat shit ,go back to selling your big issue ,tramp

  • the jam where the beatles for my generation weller is our lennon beside the stones suck anyway and yes wellers songs will rightly take their place up with lennons as the two best british songwriters ever

  • shame they copied 'taxman'
