Will it bother production of the bulb to use the green tops as they grow (I know they REgrow multiple times, bigger & stronger, 'cause I cut/use'em fresh all the time, but I've never grown'em long enough to get BIG bulbs like urs)....
Also, in using them fresh, I have cut & bagged the green tops to use as chives, but when I try to use them from the freezer, they are more rubbery than when fresh-- so I feel like it's wasteful to try & freeze'em now. Any idea what I might be doing wrong there?
@TABULOUS1 … If you want to use the tops harvest from the same plants and let the rest grow naturally. That will give you an idea if it affects the growth of the bulb. Anything fresh is better than frozen……Donald
you the man as usual! Went thru the web looking for how too's and wouldn't ya know it, should have just came and checked your page first. Always the best videos and info...I hope to see some new updates from your farm, My good Man. :)
Love the onion videos. I can't believe the onions got that big in 8-9 weeks. Miracle grow works very good. I have miracle grow soil in my garden which is mixed in to the original soil. I water the plants with fertilizer. I only have two cabbage plants right now because squirrels ate 7 of the cabbage plants and all 6 of the broccoli plants. Those squirrels are pests and tastes great in a gumbo. How do I stop from over fertilization? And do you have any advice on how to keep the squirrels away? I
@DippinSonOfALee1865 ...from the time you transplant it usually takes about 100 days till harvest. You can trap the squirrels or get a good dog....Donald
Hi, I love your videos! Is there a video on here that shows you taking the onions that you planted in the container and transplanting them to the garden? I live in NY, what would be the best way for me to plant onions. It seems their time to mature is so long. If I start in May after the last frost, when would I be able to harvest? Thank you!
@suelimpert ... living down here in Louisiana I wouldn't have a clue how to grow them in NY. We do have a "Forum" on the web site with members from all over, maybe someone in your area could help........ Donald
@suelimpert If your season is short then get "onion sets" They are basically baby onion bulbs that were grown and ready to plant and come up. You can use them for green onions or space them out for the big slicing onions. I got started too late so I am using onion sets this year. I got around 80 for $4.
I planted onions this year they came up but there wasn't anything there. I left them in for about 4 months planted them in potting mix any suggestions as to why I failed at this?
i had some collards from last year in my raised bed and i took them out turned the bed over and put more compost in there and slow release fertilzer and then put the greens from last year back in and used miracle grow everyweek and they grew in 2weeks 2foot long leaves iam eating them tonight
You are 100% right! Mother nature is amazing, but you are amazing as well for growing your own food. I'm Orly from Save The Earth Productions and I was brought up in a farmer life style. grew up in the South. and was raised wity Cajuns. Now I have videos about saving the earth, Vegtable gardening is on my top list!
Well I have beets, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, cabbage, mustard green, swiss chard and spinach growing out there now. Oh and I forgot onions. Never stopped planting all winter. They do grow much slower in the cold but so far everything has survived...... Donald
Hello Donald been awile wow your pup really has grown big.Funny how dogs are amazed by cats .Here in Indiana i have 5 dogs 1 cat 3 chickens and two ducks..Kids and i started Avacodos in the window Have you ever trid to grow Avacodos
I have never tried to grow them in fact don't think I've ever eating an avocado.
When it's cold at night Rufus (the cat) and Lucy sleep together on the golf cart seat. They get along pretty well until it's time to eat, then the pecking order kicks in. lol ...... Donald
Down here in Louisiana we can grow them year round. In the video you may have noticed the large red pots, those contain my green onions. They were planted from seed last spring and are still growing / making almost a year later. I harvest them all through the summer and winter. I guess the best time to start them from seed would be early spring or early fall. The variety I plant is called "Parade". They have done real well for me. Oh, one container of em is plenty...... Donald
The biggest benefit would be the cost. Let's say there are 300 blubs in the container in which I used 5 packs of seeds, cost $ 12.50. Ordering the same amount of bulbs online would cost $ 65.00 plus shipping. Big difference don't you think? That's why some folks say it's cheaper to buy onions than to grow em. Starting from seed makes all the difference. As far as the work goes, hopefully that new planter I bought will eliminate most of it...... Donald
It won't be too long before its time to start the spring garden plants in the Jiffy Pots. I modified the rack I place my flats on that may be of interest to some. Really helps with the germination in cold weather. Have you purchased that tractor yet? Happy new year to you too ...... Donald
I have bulbs that were planted in the garden that should be ready for transplant. Got to wait till it dries up some so I can get in there. Can't wait to show off my new onion planter. lol Happy new year to you too ...... Donald
Oh, there is no excuse for that. It's as easy as making soup. A good old chicken and sausage gumbo would sure taste good at this time of the year. Make you some!
When starting them from seed, start at least 3 months before you plan on transplanting them. They are in no big hurry to grow, especially in cold weather...... Donald
Donald, it's so great to see you again. Love the video, great to see the onions growing so nicely. Mine are doing great as you saw in the pic I sent you.
Totally agree. There's nothing like cutting fresh produce and eating right away. I feel sorry for all those poor saps that can't have fresh from the garden vegetable.....:), Lucky Us!!
Just yesterday I was looking at my list of subscription and saw yours. I was thinking about how we hadnt heard from you in a while. I was hopeing all was well and then here you are!! Onions look fine and its good to see you doing fine too!! Thanks for the update and happy new year!
I do have a good many vegetables planted and growing but since the cold weather set in everything slowed down so not much to video. Also, like last year, we are getting lots of rain which has kept me out of the garden. Soon as it dries up enough I will try to update. You have a happy new year too...... Donald
The cat's name is Rufus he likes to ride on the fender of the golf cart. The Lab puppy is Lucy. She is the one I refer to as part Lab, part monkey and part thief. Going watch your latest video now. See you...... Donald
Been planting vegetables all through the winter. Right now I have beets, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, swiss chard, mustard green, lettuce and cabbage growing. Got to till a little the other day to take out some of that winter grass that was coming up, tried again this morning but it was way too wet. We have rain in the forecast again tomorrow. I have seedlings that need to be planted but just can't get in there. Will probably plant some in containers if it keeps raining...... Donald
It's kind of hard to tell just how many came up. If I had to guess I'd say at least 300?
When I was a youngster I would spend a lot of time playing on the bayou bank. When I'd find some wild onions growing I would break off a hand full of tops just to smell em. It's things like that you don't forget...... Donald
