I think people expect too much perfection when they see things like this, but she's the one entertaining us and giving it her all. Kudos to her.

The film Surrogates, draws on what Nina Conti does. If everyone had a surrogate, a robot, puppet, how is it different? In Nina's case, mine or any other ventriloquist, is it a split personality or a surrogate? The film is great by the way...starring Bruce Willis, or read the original by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele. It's published by Top Shelf Publications. Articulate, the monkey character is fun and completely alive in Nina's imagination. The ventriloquism is authentic in technique and purpose to provide novelty and remain quietly unobtrusive allowing the cartoon room to maneuver within its considerable wit and intellect. What's needed is the right sitcom. I recall Jay Johnson, also a brilliant ventriloquist, in the sitcom, "Soap." It worked. Jon Stewart...please...bounce off an interview with Nina Conti. That would be a blast.

Monk has sort of a weird relationship with Nina, if you watch a lot of their vids. At times, it is like he is her child, but at other times, he talks like there is something sexual in their relationship. I know, I know-HE'S NOT REAL.

@greatsayain It's obviously nervous laughter here =P but she and Dan Horn and many other ventriloquists laugh at their puppet's jokes but not usually their own separate jokes. She plays her part well on stage though and here I think it's a bit of both but mostly her own separate nervous laughter

When Monk looks at the backdrop and asks if it's real, she says "what a silly question." He says, "it's grand." THAT is the routine in a nutshell.

This woman is amazing. She's embraced the line between real and fake by making the fake real. Despite Monk's constant insistance that he's not real, the sincerity and deep philosophy she has instilled in his character makes him real anyway.

No need for a script. HOW she improvises is endearing and inspired.
