  • Brian Wilson had his way with the gir in the pink bikini after this shoot. I know this because shes is my grandmother.

  • I love Brians dopey smile.

  • This was really the first acid-rock songs. Not just because Brian wrote it after an LSD trip, but also the general tone and sound....it is weird! Hard to hear it in the live one, but in the studio edition it's weirdness shows.

  • The Beach Boys will always be America's band.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • They sounded even better on AFN

  • I just adore this song & the beach boys!!!

  • Are they playing to a recording?

    Drums 0:59

Are the guitars even plugged in? It is hard to see.

    Bass 0:44

    Guitars 1:51

  • @jjjohnstevensss they're singing over the backing track

  • @jammmon I think they are playing live. I do see the guitar cords and the song just ended instead of the start of the fade.

  • @jjjohnstevensss yeah man they're singing over the backing track, you can hear the keyboard but cant see anyone playin it,

  • Are they playing to a recording?

  • This is one of the sweetest things I've ever seen. This may have been Brian's first time to sing in public after his December, 1964, breakdown. Dennis adored Brian, and you can see it on his face when Brian is singing. In earlier videos, Brian is absorbed in his drumming; but here, he's watching Brian.

("That slackjaw thing" started after Brian's first breakdown.)

  • Damn Mike Love had a great voice.

  • @JuxtaposeMystery Brian would do that "slackjaw" thing because of the near total deafness in his right ear; he would (try to) cast his voice over to his left so he could hear himself.

I actually found it nice to hear him go a little sharp at the peak of the chorus.

  • @JuxtaposeMystery

Sounds a bit farfetched to me...I think it's more likely just a family mannerism. If you see interviews with his mother Audree, you'll see that she does the same thing, Carl does it a bit too at times.

  • thumbs up if this is worth watching only to see Brian sing and the hot girl behind Mike!

  • @alexandertarangerkin and the rest of the girls

  • @alexandertarangerkin No, I'm watching because I like stripy umbrellas & bunting.

  • Re: Brian performing live, I guess he did the publicity appearances like this one since at this point Bruce was just a tour performer and not "official". Brian was still part of the public image of the Beach Boys, hence he'd make more sense appearing. Didn't matter later I guess, when the Boys' popularity plummeted and Brian turned into a coke snorting nutjob.

  • Always great to see any 60s Ed Sullivan/Jack Benny/et al performances in color.

  • i didn't know brian always had that slackjaw thing going on. i thought he developed it in the 70s

  • why does mike love look old when hes young?

and why does mike love look old when hes old too?

    what!?

  • @SirBrianCabrera It's obvious. Mike Love is a time traveller.

  • Why did Mike Love always wear a hat???

  • @mrtamberineman123

I think he couldn't assume his baldness.

  • @mrtamberineman123 why not?

  • I think this is "The Jack Benny Hour" special from NBC, aired on Nov 13th, '65. This is the first time I've seen it in color. A B&W kinescope of the full show circulates around the 'net.

  • Best band and best song ever. And a great version.

  • Oh God. Who is that girl to the right doing her dance moves while sitting down? I'll figure out a way to steal an alien time machine so I can go back in time and try to have my way with her. Yeah, she drives me that crazy.

  • @yowzephyr lmao!

  • @yowzephyr me too.

  • Mike might be an idiot but he sang okay

  • @jammmon i wouldnt say he is an idiot since he teaches meditation

  • yeah 45 years ago

  • Brian had already quit touring by this point, right?? So he still performed live for TV appearances i guess... didn't know that.

  • omg i love jack benny! and i love dennis :)

  • i'm sure we all get the jest of what a musical oasis we lived

  • Brian at the absolute PEAK of his creativity before it all went too far a year or so later.Im glad Pet Sounds was completed sucessfully as it is a masterpiece but though everyone muses over Smile, THIS album (Summer Days) is one of the best, most overlooked and underrated pop albums ever

  • @kenfig I totally agree with you! "Summer Days" is great and "The Beach Boys Today" is not really inferior to Pet Sounds.

I always wondered about Brian's quitting touring because of stage fright cause he always looks like he is having a great time on stage. Maybe it's not the doing -but the anticipation.

  • @breezebro TODAY is fantastic as well, particularly side 2 which is more serious and lower tempo but extraordinarily melodic and refined.Pet Sounds is entirely unique but i am a big fan of Smiley Smile, which is much maligned by many, unnecessarily so. I think TOO much fuss is made over what 'Smile' WOULD have been but as far as I'M concerned,in spite of all these different bootlegs and mixes, it DIDNT get released and that's the end of it.What ive heard aside of Cabinessence & Surfs Up is scrappy

  • @kenfig I try really hard to like "Smile" but I just can't. Like a lot of people, I guess, I like it for what it could have been but not as it stands. It's as if you took snippets of "Good Vibrations" long before it was finished and tried to pass it off as a great song.

  • @breezebro Well, the best tracks from that 'project' are the originally released masters of 'H & Vs' and 'Good Vibes', both available on Smiley Smile,'Wonderful' & 'Wind Chimes', both on same album and the best versions for me ; 'Cabinessence' & 'Surf's Up' both of were officially released years ago anyway. The rest of what i know to have been intended for the project are scrappy & zany bits and pieces. The other tracks on SMILEY Smile are fine for me

  • @breezebro the way the finished smile is they dont have the original boys singing on it so they dont harmonize as well

  • @breezebro listen to the purple chick version of smile. anything that opens with something as amazing as our prayer has to be good

  • Great video, brian sounds great, shame the intro and ending were cut short.

  • Nice rare footage of Brian plying live during this period!

  • too bad the dumbass audience cut the band off from properly ending the song :(

  • Brian looks and sounds good

  • Nice, Rare clip during Brian's Breakaway sound
