This was really the first acid-rock songs. Not just because Brian wrote it after an LSD trip, but also the general tone and sound....it is weird! Hard to hear it in the live one, but in the studio edition it's weirdness shows.
This is one of the sweetest things I've ever seen. This may have been Brian's first time to sing in public after his December, 1964, breakdown. Dennis adored Brian, and you can see it on his face when Brian is singing. In earlier videos, Brian is absorbed in his drumming; but here, he's watching Brian.
("That slackjaw thing" started after Brian's first breakdown.)
@JuxtaposeMystery Brian would do that "slackjaw" thing because of the near total deafness in his right ear; he would (try to) cast his voice over to his left so he could hear himself.
I actually found it nice to hear him go a little sharp at the peak of the chorus.
Sounds a bit farfetched to me...I think it's more likely just a family mannerism. If you see interviews with his mother Audree, you'll see that she does the same thing, Carl does it a bit too at times.
Re: Brian performing live, I guess he did the publicity appearances like this one since at this point Bruce was just a tour performer and not "official". Brian was still part of the public image of the Beach Boys, hence he'd make more sense appearing. Didn't matter later I guess, when the Boys' popularity plummeted and Brian turned into a coke snorting nutjob.
I think this is "The Jack Benny Hour" special from NBC, aired on Nov 13th, '65. This is the first time I've seen it in color. A B&W kinescope of the full show circulates around the 'net.
Thanks for posting this great Beach Boys classic. The sheet music for the original piano part on "California Girls" can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm - a note-for-note transcription.
Oh God. Who is that girl to the right doing her dance moves while sitting down? I'll figure out a way to steal an alien time machine so I can go back in time and try to have my way with her. Yeah, she drives me that crazy.
Brian at the absolute PEAK of his creativity before it all went too far a year or so later.Im glad Pet Sounds was completed sucessfully as it is a masterpiece but though everyone muses over Smile, THIS album (Summer Days) is one of the best, most overlooked and underrated pop albums ever
@kenfig I totally agree with you! "Summer Days" is great and "The Beach Boys Today" is not really inferior to Pet Sounds.
I always wondered about Brian's quitting touring because of stage fright cause he always looks like he is having a great time on stage. Maybe it's not the doing -but the anticipation.
@breezebro TODAY is fantastic as well, particularly side 2 which is more serious and lower tempo but extraordinarily melodic and refined.Pet Sounds is entirely unique but i am a big fan of Smiley Smile, which is much maligned by many, unnecessarily so. I think TOO much fuss is made over what 'Smile' WOULD have been but as far as I'M concerned,in spite of all these different bootlegs and mixes, it DIDNT get released and that's the end of it.What ive heard aside of Cabinessence & Surfs Up is scrappy
@kenfig I try really hard to like "Smile" but I just can't. Like a lot of people, I guess, I like it for what it could have been but not as it stands. It's as if you took snippets of "Good Vibrations" long before it was finished and tried to pass it off as a great song.
@breezebro Well, the best tracks from that 'project' are the originally released masters of 'H & Vs' and 'Good Vibes', both available on Smiley Smile,'Wonderful' & 'Wind Chimes', both on same album and the best versions for me ; 'Cabinessence' & 'Surf's Up' both of were officially released years ago anyway. The rest of what i know to have been intended for the project are scrappy & zany bits and pieces. The other tracks on SMILEY Smile are fine for me
Brian Wilson had his way with the gir in the pink bikini after this shoot. I know this because shes is my grandmother.
