  • this is incredible

  • 1:27. Hey guys, she loves this part

  • anyone know what chord hes playing at :29?

  • @zschelske1 he's playing an E powerchord w/ bass G# and the rest of the strings are open. Plus little hammerings on and off. Play around with it.

  • is this an original Mayer song? great song.

  • fuckkkkk his hands go like crazy. Wish I could play this song!!!!

  • man shreds.

  • I'm a guitar player and I can say that this song is really hard to play... specially on the acoustic guitar

  • I think the lyrics to this song are so true and about as good as it gets. . "You're not the perfect hand; but I don't hit on nineteen"

  • i really love the chords

  • FUCK!!!! I love this acoustic version!!!!

  • awesome song....

  • Its actually not that hard of a song to play, just using hammer ons during chords, in the key of B. with G# minor Emaj7 F#major....yeah again, just the key of B

  • @kpturner02

I'm with KP on this, I LOVE this song, and it intimidated the hell out of me when someone recommended I try it. If you can usually strum along and know the basics chords, this just has a couple of extra embelishments that make it sound so awesome. Don't be skeered, give it a try!

  • I'm okay with singing along, but chat? com'on people fuck off

  • i can proudly say i can play this well actually and im not trying to be cocky or brag

  • i dislike this video because i cant play this good for shit! JM owns!

  • john mayer is the best at covering up and saving face when he screws up. its crazy. he'll just pause and make a funny sound or something and its like it never happened.

  • Absolutely insane progression.

  • Left me and made it look sexy... great lyrics

  • omg!! i didnt think it was john mayer at first.

  • such a great song...wish he played it more

  • Apparently from all the messages I've gotten about this my directions to download this were kinda unclear. Enter the link in your address bar and go to the site to get the whole show. (Its only the audio, not video)

    box.net/shared/p429ei02tu

  • im sooooo pissed tht i cant get a hold of this audio file bc box.net is a faggit website tht charges even though it advertises "free trial offer"...false advertising bitches

  • @runfree3392 go to vid2mp3.com and paste the video url

  • i wonder if any has footage of this whole night? was it a early Jm show?

  • I'll repost this so people don't have to dig through the pages of comments to find it, here's the audio for the full show, I recommend checking it out if you're into some early Mayer.

    box(.)net/shared/p429ei02tu

  • @JM12sl is that a link?? how do i watch it

  • @runfree3392 take out the () and download it. It's not the video, but has the audio for the whole show

  • @JM12sl hey man...sorry to bother you again but im havin a dumb moment...do i copy it then past it and search for it on google?? are something like that

  • love this song, messed up my fingers something awful about two years ago learning it, but it worked out after a few days and i'm a better player today because john inspired me - thank you john

  • If anyone wants the tabs, or progression, pm me and i'll show you them.

  • @TheMollieSTFU

Hi, could you send me Another kind of green acoustic vesion tabs to t.nove@seznam.cz ? Thank you very much.

  • geeeeezzzz how can people be talking so much while this is going on? wtf, they dont know how lucky they are to have that talent before them playing and singing.

  • @TheySaidItIBelieved it's just entertainment to them. I have come to grips with the fact that even though I may have practiced a song for 3 months people won't crap their pants because of it. Just a nice applause and that's it. If they had the passion that we had they'd be musicians.

  • @jgl2222 VERY well put man

  • This was the housing works show from november of 04.. i was there.. my first JM concert.. didn't like kelly hunt though..

  • there's waldo!

awesome song. great playing, trying to learn it myself.

  • John Mayer-Assassin (Music Video) Up On Youtube

  • @PatrickRob82 It's really not that hard to play, just need a little practice :)

  • @acousticrock7589 I think it refers to the saying "its always greener on the other side of the fence". He doesnt need to see the other side(another girl) to know his side(his girl) is greener(better).

  • @BinGo4444444 exactly

  • I couldnt really get into this song until I bought Try! and listened to it. Oh yeah. Good stuff.

  • how old is this ???

  • @runfree3392 The first I heard of it was a a live recording from 2005, but he presented it with the words "This is a song I never really played, because it was a little too early, but now it's right on time"... So at *least* five years old? :)

  • god damn, huge crowd or smaller one, mayer always puts on a performance

  • he plays this so flawlessly.... i love it

  • Ahhh I don't understand how all of these people are talking during his performance haha, if it were me I would be dead quiet.

  • well i think it's actually one of his best songs so i'm happy it's not well-known

  • anybody know what kind of green he's referring to in this song? weed? money? green betting table in blackjack?

  • @spidrmage i hope ur joking. He's referring to the phrase "the grass is always greener on the other side" and how he doesnt need 2 shades of green to know he's on the right side

  • no joke at all but thanks for the nugget of knowledge, i've been wondering forever!

  • @spidrmage i just realized i came off as an asshole when i said "i hope ur joking" and just wanted to apologize for it. I didnt understand where u got the blackjack table from but then realized it's from the "i don't hit on 19" line. Pretty smart thinking ;)

  • dude it's all good. last night i learned how to play this on guitar and sing over it. SWEET

  • @spidrmage Will you be posting a video?

  • @spidrmage

It's an expression. "I don't need another kind of green to know..." means "I'm not stupid, I see it myself"

  • i think "green" is referring to jealousy. he doesnt need to be to jealous any more to know that he had the right girl. just an opinion...

  • @acousticrock7589 "The grass is always greener on the other side". While he might want to change this current girl for another that might be better, he's trying to convince himself that she's good enough ("I'm on the right side"). "You're not the perfect hand but I don't hit on 19." That is a reference to a good enough hand in blackjack to beat the dealer. It's not the perfect 21, but if he hits again (or breaks up with the girl to try out another one) he might get screwed. So - stay on 19.

  • green as in envy

  • these are all interesting interpretations. the song made sense this morning when i listened to it.

  • he is talking about the cliche saying.. 'the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. He is saying a dont need another kind of "green"... meaning another girl....... to know that he is on the right side of the fence with the one he has

  • Why would people be talking soo much!? i think that he is soo amazing. He is soo young here. I <3 this song

  • f*ck, how can someone move his hands so fast along the neck of the guitar?

    i want it too !

  • it actually not that hard this song, has a realy good flow to it, its easy for your hands

  • agreed with tystrat... repetition man, play long enough and you get out of the technical aspects of playing and into the sound... then cool things happen

  • practice...

  • still not understanding why he didnt promote this song harder? And why it still doesnt get the credit it deserves? i love this song, its awesome!

  • Yeah, the title is getting promotion with merchandise but the song itself is not getting any at all.

  • @catcherinred are you a fool? John Mayer wrote this song.

  • @catcherinred you're retarded

  • at 1:28 i heard "i love this sweater

  • I heard "i love this part"

  • he said im on the right, refering to the rightside

  • its "i love this part," referring to the bridge

  • whats this chord progression

  • Um, I think it's.....fucking hard to play.....yeah....that's the progression.

  • haha

  • @PatrickRob82 dude its actually really simple to learn to play cause it kinda has this flowy vibe there are some great tabs for it online i learnt it in about 2 days and once u get that rythm down its like the lead stuff just follows suit happy playing bro keep it up

  • @PatrickRob82 haha its not that hard

  • @PatrickRob82 its really not that hard. G# minor > F# sus > B major > B major 1st inversion > E - G# - B (played in the bass) > A major > E major. Ok its a lil hard but most of the complexity comes in the nuances; the hammers, and the funky voicings. If you're familiar with the hendrixian way than it should come pretty naturally. This should help alot of people wondering how to approach this song. add your own stuff to it though be creative. hope this helps. Thumbs up this so people can see.

  • @kweerb8 **** A major > C# - D# - E > E major

  • @kweerb8 Also, if your familiar with "Einsteinian" mathematics, E=Mc2 should come naturally.

I appreciate your trying to help my dumb ass, but what you wrote shot about a mile and a half over my empty, uneducated head. =/

  • @PatrickRob82 the tabbed version of this is not too hard. ive got it down. but the version hes playing is hard as heck

  • @innicoco57 I play it his way, it's not that hard.

  • @Neptunade Yeah it just takes some practice but you eventually get the feel for it.

  • @PatrickRob82 Not really, it's all chord embellishments. If you know the progression, it's not that much else. It's a great song, though.

  • intro is. g#minor f#7 b e a e.

    then verse is : g#minor f# b e x 2

    then c# minor 7 g#minor f#minor c#minor7 emaj7.

of course theres fills and everything but try and work that out by yourself.

way to hard to type into a youtube comment.

i think it is in 6/8 ut im not too good with timing.

  • AAAAooouu...:)

  • Is this the only VIDEO of Mayer playing the song in existence?

  • A lot of audiences are like that... It's kind of funny when you play in front of a live audience you never know what they're thinking. Some audiences look interested through the whole thing and leave without a word, while others seem to not pay attention at all through my whole set and I then end up selling a ton of CDs and people all tell me how I great I am. It's a weird game...

  • I hate how that's the way it is. But I know what you mean.

  • wow if john mayer was singing to me in a personal setting like this i would keep my fucking mouth shut

  • hahahaha, that's the best comment

"i would keep my fucking mouth shut"

    totally agree

  • the audience is so fucking annoying. They are like freaking yelling and shit. i bet Mayer never went back there again.

  • They're so lucky to be watching like this anyways.

  • damn straight. me, living abroad will probably not be able to see mayer for a long time...

  • Where was this and is there a recorded album or something of it? Sound really good! Again, as usual

  • I've been looking for a recorded version of this acoustic but I've had no luck. There is an electric version on the Try! album with the trio.

  • it's so good!

  • soo good

  • why is his chord progression so good

  • because he is god.

  • because it's one of the most used ones, so it always sounds a bit recognisable.

plus it's not just the progression, it's what he does with it.

i can plan a 100 progressions like that, but those licks and that smoothness is what really defines the song.

  • Youtube's comment screening is brutal. I'll try to post this again, its a website I uploaded the whole show. (Slightly altered so it can get past the filters siince you aren't alloweed to post websites in the comment section)

    box. net/shared/p429ei02tu

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH!

    :)

  • cheers JM that show was amazing. you are the man x

  • For John Mayer to play guitar and sing must be what most people feel like when they walk and chew gum at the same time. I had this beautiful guitar part down in a few days but to add his singing and impeccable musical timing is nothing short of genius. It makes me feel absolutely no remorse for paying for his CD's.

  • So it sounds like theres a high demand for this show. I've got it in mp3 format, so if any of you want the whole show shoot me a message with your email address and I'll try and get it to you.

  • Hey JM just wondering if you know what he is talking about on the first mp3 you uploaded to box? Thanks again for the upload. Great gig would of loved to have been there.

  • I guess he just picked up a book off the shelf and started reading part of it to fit the theme of playing in a book store...he's just joking around and having some fun with the crowd

  • I'd love this whole gig, wether it was audio or video. These are the ones that really make Mayer, Mayer and not just some random guy off mtv. I like the big shows too, but these have a great feel to them

  • love this version !

  • This is my favorite song off TRY! I wish he would play it more often...

And i wish they would STFU. I saw him at a freakin concert venue and it is was more quiet

  • i would kill to have this entire show on video...i mean, there's a time at clarity he does a thing with the guitar... this show is really out of this world

  • what show was this

  • same shirt in ACL 2007!!!!

  • If you listen to the entire show there is a lot of talking for the first half of it and then it finally got quiet. He did the only version of daughters I like at this show. The improv on it was sick and no one said a word during it.

  • where can you hear this entire show???

  • Where'd you find the audio for this gig?

  • where where where?????

  • Il vaut mieux faire que dire.

  • one of his finest songs. look at that guitar playing, i mean, the chord progression is just a work of ART. the sound of this song is sick, and let's not even talk about the lyrics.....

  • Yeah, it's from 2004. The neon-like version of 3x5 that he plays right after this song is the best version I've heard him play.

  • John should "cap" those mo-fo's and continue playing

  • shut the fuck up bitches

  • Man, does anyone know the lyrics he sings where it's kind of improvised near the end?

  • "I ain't gonna lose you...to know I don't want to. I ain't gonna lose you...to learn I don't to. No, I ain't gonna lose...ooh oh oooh."

  • "it's not a perfect hand, but i don't hit on 19." how does he come up with this sick line?

the talking girls are absolutely oblivious to how amazing john mayer is as an artist, because if they knew they'd shut the hell up. probably wondering when he's gonna play daughters.

    more jm3 please.

  • Why are all those spoiled idiots talking! if i were john i'd be pissed

  • Those girls should really stfu, It really ruins the performance regardless of how wonderful John sounds

  • i love that part too!

  • Does anyone out there have the video for this entire show? It needs to be posted. He plays the sickest version of neon at this show!!!!

  • very nice very fluid

  • Where was this!?

  • I'm guessin some coffee shop in Atlanta...

  • actually it was a benefit for a project called housing works. i believe it was in NY in a bookstore of sorts.

  • sweet vid

  • Damn it. I had to post, just to wish that those biotches would shut the hell up while he was playing. I would've stabbed them in the kidneys.

  • ahahha lmfao word ^

  • Beautiful song ... amazing man!

  • this is surprisingly good acoustic

  • John Mayer is one of the best musicians and will go down as one of the Greats, whether you like him or dont.

  • Amen..!

  • stupid ass audience

  • shut the fuck up while the man is playing!!!

  • i love that song, it amazes me how he manages that guitar, and goddd! the lyrics. One day i hope to meet him.

  • The best John's song...very nice music

  • rude rude rude people in the audience jesus

  • how come theres no other videos of him playing this song, this is one of his best songs, not even a fan cam one cmmon!

  • love John Mayer, no one is better than him!

  • this is great.

  • one of you fucking amazing guitarist/singings out there on youtube cover this song... because this song is amazing especially if you are a jimi fan

  • john mayer rocks, sorry your all idiots

  • dude you suck shit!!! you messed up the song big time!

  • Its his own song so he can pretty much play it any way he wants.

  • i support you -->thenewpollution<--

  • get over it he was probably a nobody then

  • dude hes obviously not a notbody in this vid. this was in 2005 before the trio cd came out. he already released 2 platinum records. nobody? i think not man

  • lol at your ignorance

  • A nobody playing his own signature martin.

Ignorance is not bliss my friend.

  • I second that!

  • I LOV THIS SONG.

  • i agree, i would have loved to be at the show, these people are totally disrespectin.

  • i cann't believe these people are being this loud and retarted while the man is jammin out, disrespect

  • jarguitar, the one you have in cd is the used book cafe, 2004?
