I know you raise "cane" not "came". At the stage it was obvious that any poor individual who cut cane was still indentured as a slave. How low can a woman mentally and physically go to accept that her man is cheating on her, she knows it, has proof of it but doesn't want explanations. I've been there and am still there. Lady Day you'll remain with us forever, please god xx
tried to get the lyrics.. hush now, don't explain i know your raise came i'm glad you're back, don't explain quiet, don't explain you've mixed with some dame skip that, lipstick don't explain you should know i love you and what love endures all my thoughts are of you for I'm so completely yours can't you hear folks chatter and I know you cheat but right and wrong don't matter where you're with me sweet hush now, don't explain you're mine you're everything my life, yours love don't explain
This is the real Billie Holiday before she got fucked up on gear. Here she has the voice of an angel before the demons took it away from her. Pure class and sophistication with an unbelievable phrasing ability.
As sung by Herman Cain: Hush now, I'm Herman Cain. You speak; you're in pain. You're glad I'm back. I'm Herman Cain. "Quiet's" my refrain. Nothing left to gain. That's not lipstick. I'm Herman Cain. I've never harassed you. And the facts will find. I've even outclassed you. With my 9-9-9. The press loves to chatter. 'Cause they think I cheats. Newt does but don't matter. 'Cause he still competes. Hush now, I'm Herman Cain. Why is there disdain? My life's boring. I'm Herman Cain
check out my interpretation of this song on my channel? (: it's very different from the original, but I love this song. Billie Holiday was a genuine artist.
What an incredible song!Billie Holiday,Nina Simone,Diana Ross etc. etc. different women, different characters...and this song's spirit changes due to these singers.Spectacular...
Billie Holiday was introduced to me by my mother, Mary, and I loved it from the start... I felt a connection at a young age. She is timeless. So tragic...the best....
I actually prefer The Wild Colonials' version from their "Fruit of LIfe" album better. Lead singer Angela McCluskey's raspy voice, infused with intense emotion, actually has a sense of greater depth than Billie Holiday's. I know most of you won't like to hear that. But it's my opinion. And until you hear the other version you really can't say otherwise. Unfortunately, I don't think The Wild Colonials' version has been uploaded to YouTube, unless it's under Angela McCluskey.
@stonewtube Angela McCluskey's version is magical especially her high notes where she and Billie actually are quite similar and that was the version I first heard this song and i fell in love with it so you can imagine how I love Angela's version but I have to say when I found Billie's version I thought - that's It! what I love about Billie is her timing. 2.37 of perfection. not too slow not too quick. her high notes are as deep as low notes that is really rare. sings with deep nostalgia...
@stonewtube , I like Angela and you're entitled to that, but don't assume everyone has a predetermined opinion. I'm a fan of hers and thought it was their song originally, but now I prefer this.
What is there to be explained? She's the best ever. She still sings better than anyone, alive or dead. And by the way, even technically her voice is superb then, which is not even so important, once that the feeling she transmits us has never deteriorated. I need no explanation. I have already well understood...
If you believe there is a God in heaven, then you have to believe this is the song that brought Miss Billie home to heaven. It is simply one of her finest songs, and I can't think of another song that speaks so eloquently of the power of love to bring both joy and pain to our lives. Simply brilliant, and simply beautiful Miss Billie.
@butfulmuzik Absolutely true...She always said she sang songs that reflected her own life, no one elses. Many on here talk about other vocalists and as good as others may be and as much as they may beat themselves up in order to sing like THIS, one has to live the life FOR REAL . Walk the walk, talk the talk. Billie did that. Nobody else can. (Etta James came close and Etta knew Billie.)
This song, and her interpretation of it, just tears your heart out. She adds her own life's experiences to this ( and all her songs) and makes them just so much more wonderful. If there's a God in Heaven, there's an extra-special place for talents who suffered such overwhelming heartache, like Billie and Judy Garland and Edith Piaf... their gift lives on in our hearts. May they all be resting in the peace they so wanted here on Earth, but only found in the dark dispair they endured.
Marvelous. Love the vibrato during the "ain" in the word "explain." Judging by the clarity of the voice, I'd say this was recorded around the mid 1940's? Holiday endures as one of, if not THE greatest jazz singer of all time - Ella Fitz said as much.
Her published Pseudonym was given her for label credit, so that she could release recordings under this Assumed Name, due to the
ban placed upon her by the recording industry due to her Addiction and Instability, this name was used on her recordings via Capitol, Credit for this bold move to restore Hoilidy's career is credited to Billy May, Johnny Mercer, and Paul Whiteman. Lester Young came into the scene secondarily, after she was given this pseudonym.
When Billie Holiday returned to the recording studios, it was thru Capitol Records, Billy May (Captol's CEO) and Paul Whiteman, who backed her with is Orchestra, her first recording with Capitol Records was Gloomy Sunday, and the name that she was given for the label credit was "Lady Day" by Paul Whiteman the "King of Jazz" That is how she recieved this "Title" of Nobility in Music.
unconditional love, what we wil endrure for loves embace. lady Day, my hearts fantasy how your voice and words carry me on an unconditional journey, called love. where the only condition that exsist are the ones we set in place...
i love billie holiday her journey was short but her life will be forever played till the end of time.
If you have loved and still do, you haven´t lost anything. Love lives in your heart, even if the subject of your love has gone. No one can take that away from you, praise the lord that you´ve been able to feel so deeply once in your life!

Im mad at the world cause it made me spend 15 years searchin for this music and now only one 16th of my life has been filled with it!
peta2242 2 years ago 25
@peta2242:
A valid point.
But look at it this way: if you live to 100 (not out of the question), you'll have had 85% of it to share with Lady Day.
Anyone who's now middle-aged or older and hasn't known about her for a long time can't ever have that.
And just think how many other great musicians, artists, and writers are just waiting out there for you to discover...
