airbananatwins- agree completely. actually i love bruce the man but not the music since the early days, but for nebraska. I think they changed forever when they lost mad dog's funky off-beat rythyms and david sancious's amazing jazz vocabulary on keyboards.
max and bittan always seemed pretty wooden in contrast.
I agree with clankers. Vinny's drumming makes this! Max's drumming is boring and unadventurous. Infact most rock drummers can only keep a beat, and all good musicians could do that, whether they're a drummer or not. Jazz drummers are the real thing. As soon as Bruce let the mad dog go the e street band lost all its drive.
I respectfully disagree. While Vinny and David Sancious were definately cool and you have to wonder what the E Street band would have been like had the they stayed, I don't think there's a case where you can say that adding Max and Roy was not an upgrade. It is certain the best of the best is 1978 or before, it's not fair to say that the stuff after that is bad music, just not as good. I'll be in Hershey tonight hoping he does Thundecrack or 57th Street or New York City Serenade, etc.
I thought that this was one of the better songs he did believe it or not.... Right behind "jesse's Girl" When he was on General Hospital did he still tour? ;P
you know i miss the mad dogs style in the e street band... i loved the wild jazz funky sycopated beats he brought to the band. i also caught an interveiw of his , first time i saw him speek.. and he seems like a really humble and sweet guy.. love max too and would never change a single thing in bosses catalog, but do wonder what other great stuff would come with playing with guys like vinny.. the wild and innocent was 1 of bruces highlights and best albums!! long live the boss and e street!
this was on the special born to run 25th anniversary cd collection. There was a making of born to run dvd and it included three songs from the early days. Thundercrack, Billy's Circus Story, and Spirit in the Night
great!!!

I can respect different tastes and that some people prefer bombastic arena rock of born to run and thereafter; but an upgrade?
Mad Dog vs Max, I think that's just personal preference. I like drumming that adds to the music rather than serves as a metronome.
Some swear by Watts and Ringo, I'll take Moon.
Some serious folk and bluegrass musicians think Bob Dylan is a joke. Different kicks for different hicks...
I'm going to dive back into the early 70s now, all sepia toned, warm and real.

What's up with the Boss in this video? It looks like he has the flu. The "inspiration" is forced.

E Street would not be what it is if it was not for Max and Roy By the way part of the reason Vinny got let got was for tempo problems.
