PFD isn't going to save you here. You need a clear path to get out on 30 seconds or less. This isn't going to happen here and everyone should try swimming for more than a minute in April when the ice is gone.. This is just bad practice,
I hope he's got a good wetsuit on. I made the mistake of canoeing during the winter once without the proper gear. A dry set of clothes in a dry bag doesn't help as you canoe floats away. I won't make that mistake again!
