  • LoL

  • in terms of model trains, what gauge is this? Is it one at all? If not, what is the scale (eg. 1:87, etc.)

  • Some day, I'll be rich and famous for making video games and I'll have two live steamers, Sierra Rwy No. 3 and 28

  • ive always wanted to own a live steam train, but they are so expensive, my car is worth less than most of them

  • @sgtwylde1996 I hear you there, for sure!

  • #800,has no cowcatcher.

  • I have a few questions about this stuff!!

How much weight can they pull? Seems like they usually only pull 2 or 3 cars

How long can you keep them running before you have to stop?

Do you guys ever double head the steam engines or is that hard to do?

  • Steam locomotives are such things of beauty and character, I am sad that I was not alive in the days when steam ruled the rails!

  • really want to drive Up 844

  • Hi ,

    mein name ist Heiko,

ich bin von beruf Lokomotivführe in Deutschland ....

    euer video ist erste klasse

wo bekommt man solche modelle ?

währe nett wenn einer von euch Antwortet

    Heiko_philippi@yahoo.de

  • I went there this summer 2010, the place looked abandon

  • Another great video Skip. Nice to see some of the "behind the scenes" operations. I always wondered how they haul those big engines around. Pete

  • Is this place open for public to come visit?

  • How much one the locomotive will cost I wonder. ?

  • What a amazing miniature engines!

  • I`ve enjoyed riding the "Lake Area Steamers" in the Cleveland area also the JV railroad in Bridgeport MI. (diesel), and I`ll tell ya the smell of the coal burning while running the rails is a lost paradigm! I enjoy an HO scale love for the rail and have always been a "rail fan", but cannot fathom the enjoyment of owning and operating a system such as yours. Salute to all of you in your national treasure. Have fun boys!!! Yes were still boys at 50+.

  • That ´s nice .

There is one in my city in Ribeirão Preto Brazil, but nobody cares about.

I think it´s the only one in Brazil.

  • Nice to see that Southern green.

  • just awesome

  • What is the weight of these engines? They look pretty heavy.

  • Very cool, thanks for sharing.

  • What's that gray looking engine that doesn't seem to have any features? What's it modeled after?

  • Surely that magnificent UP 800 class can haul more than two measly carriages?

    Load her up!!!!

  • I'm sure live steam model railroading is a great hobby, but all that's freakin' expensive I'm sure!

  • You just can't get away from the 544 can you? I know it says 800, but it is close enough.

  • That FEF-3 UP 800 type steamer has made a couple of visits to Dodge City Ks for display at Boot Hill Model Train Show.

  • the whistle on that 800 class locomotive really sounds close to the real thing

  • My wife and I took our children to a live steam event at Tahuna in Nelson New Zealand (our home country) last week and we all absolutely loved it.

We had several rides on different engines, some about this size but some much smaller. One thing I was intrigued by was how on earth some of the smaller engines could pull so many people! Is it really all done by the steam power of the engine or is there another electric motor some where? If not they must generate an awesome amount of torque!

  • steam is the strongest power there is....nuclear powered aircraft carriers are steamers.the nuke just boils the water

  • @slooob23 just the steam power but the locos weigh several hundred pounds

  • @slooob23 not just what skipw said but also that water expands 1400 times in volume when it turns to steam, so as long as the engine has sufficient traction it could pull almost anything.

  • Yeah steam has more torque the an IC engine aa lot more, but steam is 25% less efficient. Thats why we don't use it anymore, but with steam you can use any fuel with water; water's free and since I live in the east coast country I have plenty of free wood!

  • @slooob23 This little steam pulling all those people is just like a full scale steam - say - a 4-6-4 Hudson or 4-8-4 Northern pulling 130 or so loaded cars. That's why steam is so great (even in small scale it doesn't surprise me to pull all those people!) - Steam is very powerful, very efficient - but too labor intensive, too expensive and too dirty for the environment!!! So then was born Diesel-electric power.

  • @slooob23 im part of that club...what a great show

  • @slooob23 bom dia gostaria de lhe perguntar se existe a possibilidade de comprar uma locomotiva a vapor será que eu consigo no seu país ??

  • @slooob23 Something to consider about steam is that it isn't that different from electrical motors. Steam and electricity make peak torque at 0rpm. They are also both stored energy systems. The boiler not only makes steam, but stores steam. You only need lots of power when first getting a train moving, so those little engines have 3 or 4 cars engines at full throttle worth of energy stored up in that boiler. It can all be released in an instant, just like from a battery.

  • I dont have the money to get into this yet but wish I could.... Does anyone know if there is a live steam club in Dallas or anywhere in Texas?

  • That's just it I don't either stuff like this you can't really buy, that's how hobby's like this start you learn from other peoples frugality and mistakes and learn to do yourself.

I can't see it another way so many hobbys start like that.

  • Your grandpa built that UP steamer? That's an amazing engine.

  • God there is some nice engines on this. You can see them best at the end.Beautiful work. Glad to be an engine builder too. They are all getting old and leaving us. Not too many more new builders.

  • @petro062 : Can you help in setting up this hobby in India ?

  • I love that FEF locomotive!

  • Real modeling

In Japan,Live steam model can't run over bridge, because of dangerous.

I've never heard such a fantastic layout

  • how is it dangerous? it cant be that dangerous if they are doing it in this video

  • Yeah I mean really....walt disney had his going over what? a 10ft tall trestle? I know thats not the right number...but it was HUGE!

  • This is one fine layout but, the Los Angles Live Steamers those guys are the Serious HardCores of Live Steam RR's

  • @SkipW Try Riverside.

  • @ISO8 lol i can tell youre using a translator. youve never "seen" such a fantastic layout

  • @ISO8 Virtually every live steam track in the U.S. has bridges of some kind. Why do you say they are dangerous?

  • Nice video and nice little trains.

Boy look at all that open country...Fields as far as the eye can see.

Put {The Great Cockcrow Railway} into the search box to check out a nice little line near where I live.

  • i always wanted to build one with someone but i can not afford to do it

  • Great video ! Finally someone who can take great shoots and great closeups.

We were driving on those last week on train festival in Owosso,MI Now I think I'm in love with these little stinkers :)

  • do have to build these trains and if you do how long dose it take?

  • Yes you do and its takes 2-5years to do you can spend a little more money and get them built for at a cost and there not easy to maintane or keep going On some trains you need to have a big pockets and alot of time and you need to know what youre doing they range from $1,000-$50,000 and a truck or van to transport them

  • ITS MANZILLA, make that many MANZILLAS!!!!

  • That whistle almost sounds like the real UP 844

  • true, it kinda does.

  • Your Right,It Does!!

  • nice video might wanner check out mine

  • I helped rerail a 4-8-4 northern one time. Every wheel was on the ground. It took me + five other people and ALOT of leverage. We did manage it though.

  • a real one?

  • Yup, six people lifted it right on the tracks

    ;)

    No, it was 1/8th scale.

  • it would suck to derail on one of these!

  • Great engineering....

  • That Northern is To Sweet, Your grandpa did a Super fine job, I really admire the work and craftsmanship that they put in to this hobby.... Nice Job.

You should make a window mount for the camera and give ua a engineers view of a ride around this road... that would be sweet.

  • do these guys still meet every so often? i'd love to go.

  • nice post thanks for bringing your camerock :)

  • I would build a track going through the united states and then one day ride the train for like a month across the US : D

  • Every time I watch this video I want one of these trains!

  • My dad was a member of the now disbanded North West Ohio Live Steamers. I had the privilege to attend many a meet.

  • why cant i see any steam coming from 844?

  • I guess you mean, are they safe for children, not what first got into my mind, seeing your question... This is pretty safe, depending on the operators of course, but since complete safety can't be garanteed, like many things in life are potentialy dangerous, but that's life 101.

  • Oh shut up you!

  • I wonder if the guy who owns the 800 fabricated it himself or used a kit? if its a kit ill buy it but it would probably be really really expensive.

  • are they running on compressed air or what?

  • Steam just like the real thing. He is probley useing propane. but there are a lot that are fired by Coal.

  • what will one of those cost u?

  • That was an incredible video! I really enjoyed watching it.

  • I love the FEF, but where is the centepeed tender??,

    Nice video Skip,

    greatings from Holland

  • yeah! but where is the piolt? lol

  • I think it got eaten in a derailment in part 1

  • the older 800s had those old-fashioned vandys. Judging from the fact that this FEF has the number 800 (first FEF built), I'm pretty sure this one falls under the category of "older 800." :)

  • @UnionPacificBigBoy The FEF-1's like 800 weren't built with Centipiedes.

  • I want one of those 800s. How much?

  • Great video.Nice engine.

  • that green southren, what was that? oil? propane?

  • I don't know if you know this or not, but I'll say it anyway. Perhaps I can enlighten at least one person.

If the smoke has any color (if you can actually see it) then it's either oil or coal, where as propane exhaust is transparent.

If you'll note the firebox door, specifically the hole in the center of it, this usually indicates an oil fire.

  • The southern mikado i mt favirote

  • How did you get 20 minutes on youtube?

  • Yeah is there a 4-8-8-4?

  • by any chance do they have a 4-8-8-4 that u can build or is that to big

  • This is so far the best Live Steam video I've seen on Youtube :-)

  • Love the 4501, Getting an Railroad Supply 2-6-0 Mogul! Going to model it after the Ma & Pa # 26!

  • The 4-6-0 is fav.

  • how much for a starter model?

  • Could be anywhere from £900 ($1200) - £2000 ($2400) but it depends what kind of loco you want.

  • Hey, SKIP! Man what do you spend in gas finding all this stuff! lol

    This was something cool!

  • yep, that missing pilot dug up 4 cross-ties earlier in the day, but did that stop that UP #800 ...NO Way!

He came in from Nebraska, and determined to STEAM ON!

  • the 4-8-2, at 10:50. looks nice.

  • It's missing it's pilot/cow catcher

  • I really like that UP 800.
