he actually might have been real, but the story has been changed because it was written in victorian times, and people kept doing different versions of it, and the charactors were sometimes completely different. I read one version, and it said that Johanna wasn't sweeney's daughter and she married some sailer named mark ingestrie. Stephen Sondhiem's version of the story is considered fiction because a lot of the events aren't true, but sweeney todd might have been a real person.

Sweeney Todd started out has a novel, where he was just a villain. An evil-cackling villain. And Sondheim (Sp?) said that for the play they gave Sweeney a reason to be evil.

So it could be based on a real event, but it's unlikely.
