Can i install Ubuntu on external portable hard drive or i have to install ubuntu on the computer hard drive?

Yes you can install Ubuntu to an external drive, but you need to understand where you desire the bootloader to reside.

So you can try out ubuntu first and then if you like it you can install ubuntu on your hard drive using live cd. is that right?
