I saw this version of Life on Mars FIRST in the USA. This one by far beats the pants off the one they tried to pass off on us. John Simm's Sam and Philip Glenister's Gene are WAY better. This is because John didn't try and make Sam an airhead pretty boy and Philip made Gene very rough around the edges yet likable in a quirky way. Gotta love British acting. :) Better writing too the USA version botched that too.

Gene Hunt is brilliant LOM>A2A i think

LOM was more gritty and had a better character in sam tyler, but different strokes for different folks
