Elton's band at it's peak - some energy left when John Jorgenson split and the amazing Guy Babylon passing. Have to give credit for Elton to keep the music going - I think some drive within him, must keep the music going - and I am glad, ever so glad for music.

Regardless of his sexual orientation (which has no effect on ones musical talent) Elton John is one of the greatest artists to ever live. He's a man who is charitable, immensely talented, and kind. Met him in Chicago once, was very humble and polite. Too many haters on YouTube who obviously know nothing about music!
Straight or gay (who cares~!)... Elton John has written more great songs in this era than anyone else... Just try to think of anyone who has written more... When I think of this, I can't come up with anyone~~!! Keep the great music coming Elton~~!! xx :-)

Heard and saw this for the very first time on the original Yellow Brick Road tour. Blew me away. Thought it was one of the best pieces of R & R ever. Still is, 4 decades later.

This is without question the most awesome, kick-ass, rockin, freakin all-time best rock song if all time! [Stairwy to heaven was no. 1] I had this in the back of my mind for years and couldn't put a finger on it--then re-discovered it. Jeez! Where has this been? This is awesome, wonderful. My youth? I don't know.

Check out Dream Theaters version of this song, its just as good. They even do pink floyd covers as good as pink floyd themselves.Check them out" DREAM THEATER"
@grassy0 I have the MP3 of dream theaters version and i'd say its different but not better than eltons, alittle too techno without the soul or emotion that goes into it, but still a great listen all the same. I dont know a great deal about dream theater but the lead vocalist was excellent in this rendition, he made love lies bleeding his own. But for me, its elton all the way.
@grassy0 It's a shame the Dream Theater version never got filmed (a one night only thing at Ronnie Scott's club in London)....great covers on that night, with great guests too. But for those who miss this type of great "progressive stuff", Dream Theater has to be the most talented collection of artists out there today (even with new drummer), whether it's their own high octane, or boootleg covers....check out Porcupine Tree as well (Deadwing, In Absentia)...fantastic prog band from UK.

ooh that was so cool. hey man im stoned heres one of the best musicians on the planet, think i'll throw my crack pipe at his head. lol. reefer pipe. whatever. i've read a story about almost every musician i know getting hit like that during a concert by something.
Fantastic starter to a truly great album- the first 5 tracks are all absolute classics. Elton's new album The Union, with Leon Russell, is his best since the mid 70s

Greensboro, 1974, Caribou tour. The show started w/ this tune. Reel-to-reel player (visible to audience) was running w/ the synthesizer part. Great show. Kiki Dee's band opened. I do believe this show was the first and last time Elton Johnw as at his best then after he kindda went down hill a bit. but i still love how he still playing and shows nearly all alround the world. and plus i love the man he is my al time fav singers. GOD BLESS ELTON Good luck elton for 2010. dude
First heard this song about 1973 while in the 8th grade. Our aasignment was to write a simple story that we would read and have back ground music to. Another student wrote a ghost story and used Funeral fo a Friend. I had never heard anything like this and it amazes me till this day. Yellow Brick Road is in a class by itself and this song is a big reason for that. Simply splendid!!!
Wow! There's still nothing like this one. A cold, desolate opening, an overpowering, anguished blast of synthesizers, and then one crescendo after another until it flies way over the top and winds up in orbit. Still amazing after all these years. Thanks for posting this video!
To the young people: This is when songs made sense. When the lyrics weren't limited to just one 'catchy' line, repeated over and over and over ('feel my lumps, my lumps, my lovely lady lumps' or something like that......
In the 'old days' (to the young 'whiper-snippers'), we had these things called 'bands' - you know - a group that always plays together....
Lady 'Let's dance' Beaver Flash Ga-Ga' plays what instrument? Whoops - let's check Brittany who plays....what?
wow that was a very inspired rsponse, hehe. yeah a visual for this entire song would be great. although, since you brought up Disney, I'd prefer something along the lines of that cartoon w/ that bug running away from the music notes and piano keys. don't know the name of that one, always wondered. but yeah.
Bug running away from music notes & piano keys...sounds awesome. In one segment of this Elton song it would fit well. The visual I had...A bird in flight flapping it's wings to the beat of the music trying to get away from advancing technology....
love elton and dream theater. I'd like to see many cover this set. It's euphoric. People out there, if you love music, take our advice and check out Dreams first three CDs!!!!
1994, or was it 1993? I was an usher at Ohio Stadium for the Elton John /Billy Joel Piano men tour. and i got a plum location in the first 10 rows on Elton's side. He opened with this song!! I will NEVER forget this!
oh god. this song is so incredibly epic, i need to see elton john so bad. this as an opener would bring me to tears. this tour will billy joel is so absolutely unreal, but its coming nowhere close to me :( maybe next time.
I got to see Elton John and Billy Joel perform together in 2001 and it was absolutely amazing. Funeral for a friend/love lies bleeding was the opener. If u ever get the chance go.
you are incredibly lucky. any chance to see either i would jump at, but this is just so cool. i may go to california for this, even though i'm in washington. its just too good
...to see him flying across the stage in that silly costume, and dive for the floor, and slide to a stop UNDER the piano, then prop himself up on one elbow reaching the keyboard with his other hand, not missing a beat... Showmanship AND Talent!!!
I don't mean to give offense but I noticed that for several months after princess Di's death that this seemed to be yanked from the classic rock stations.
Great song, great video. I've seen Elton twice and he was superb. Is Davey Johnstone the most loyal guitarist ever, he's been with Elton for nearly 40 years? And still has an unseemly amount of hair!!!
Two songs at my funeral--this and Claptons No Alibis !! We have been blessed with some of the greatest misicians ever--John,Lennon,Clapton,Joel and on and on!
When this song came out, I was like....8th grade? I taught myself how to play it and told all my friends I wanted it played at MY funeral. I just listened to again after all these years and you know what? It's damned good song! Maybe I STILL would like to have it played at my funeral!
I was lucky to have seen Elton John, back in 1974 with all his crazy costumes and eye glasses. I skipped school to buy 14 tickets for all my friends. We saw him in Largo Maryland, at the Capital Center, now it's a shopping mall, oh well, some things don't last forever but great memories do.
God, I remember the Capital Center! I grew up in Falls Church, VA. I remember when Tyson's Corner was a little bitty mall! Haha! I've just announced my age! 41, in case anyone wants to know. I loved music back in the seventies, especially Elton John. Did he wear his Donald Duck costume at the concert you saw? Or was that much later?
Wow what a great video! I love seeing good 'ole Nigel Olsson still playing with him. I was very lucky to see him on his Reg Strikes Back tour - right before he gave up the costumes. Man I was in line all night for tickets and got 6th row at Merriweather Post in Maryland. I was in heaven that night - it was awesome! Thanks for posting this video!
i'll never forget the Piano Players tour by Elton John and Billy Joel at Ohio Stadium in 1994. I was an usher and was assigned to be right in front to the right of the stage and next to Elton! They started with Funeral for a Friend!!
ye i agree dream theaters version is way better much more stuctured and skillfull...well i guess dream to good but got to give credit to elton john credit for makin a brillient riff on piano....but if anyone can make a better cover of that song it will be dream theater
I would rate Yellow Brick Road as one of the top ten, if not top five, albums of the 1970s. I would also say it was one of the top ten Rock albums of all time. Few albums have endured the generations like this one. Very impressive.
I generally don't care for Elton John's music, but this song is by far his best -- an epic masterpiece as someone else said -- and this video is the best live version I've seen. Thank you for posting it.
this song comes from Elton's high point in his songwriting carrer- Goodbye Yellow Brick Road- had everything from raunchy, soul & rock, and this was one of the VERY BEST!!! THANKS FOR POSTING IT!!!
I really love this whole concert. This song is a fantastic opener. I got the dvd a few weeks ago. It's part of the greatest hits set. It's a shame nobody posted 'i don't wanna go on with you like that' from the concert on here. That's my highlight.
Notice he pops one of his monitors and is obviously very unhappy with the replacement (and the mix) - lots of shaking head and grimacing- GREAT performance though - the synth lead intro is much better nowadays as Guy plays the whole thing live.
I was in high school the album containing this song came out and it just blew alot of us away. It's still a very underated classic. I agree completly with "Lazycouchpotato" it's a classic.
This is on of the most forgotten songs of all time and it is an epic masterpiece...the guitar, the lyrics, and of course Elton John on the Piano. I would love to see this song come back into the limelight somehow.

oh god. this song is so incredibly epic, i need to see elton john so bad. this as an opener would bring me to tears. this tour will billy joel is so absolutely unreal, but its coming nowhere close to me :( maybe next time.
DamagedJustice88 3 years ago
I got to see Elton John and Billy Joel perform together in 2001 and it was absolutely amazing. Funeral for a friend/love lies bleeding was the opener. If u ever get the chance go.

The Donald Duck costume made its appearance in the early-mid eighties: the Central Park concert.
chironapolonio 3 years ago
...to see him flying across the stage in that silly costume, and dive for the floor, and slide to a stop UNDER the piano, then prop himself up on one elbow reaching the keyboard with his other hand, not missing a beat... Showmanship AND Talent!!!
louswire 3 years ago
I don't mean to give offense but I noticed that for several months after princess Di's death that this seemed to be yanked from the classic rock stations.

Bloody Masterpiece. From a Yank... Who writes and composes stuff like this anymore :(

Great song, great video. I've seen Elton twice and he was superb. Is Davey Johnstone the most loyal guitarist ever, he's been with Elton for nearly 40 years? And still has an unseemly amount of hair!!!

This song still brings Tears to my eyes, I love it!!!!

We saw him in Largo Maryland, at the Capital Center, now it's a shopping mall, oh well, some things don't last forever but great memories do.
yvonnemjb 3 years ago 2

When Elton John played this with Davey, Dee and Nigel in 1976 it was incredible and it still is with his current band. Nobody can top EJ and his band

My favorite E j song. I was more of a hard rocker in those days. This came out of nowhere, pleasantly.

I really love this whole concert. This song is a fantastic opener. I got the dvd a few weeks ago. It's part of the greatest hits set. It's a shame nobody posted 'i don't wanna go on with you like that' from the concert on here. That's my highlight.
paulbno1 5 years ago
Notice he pops one of his monitors and is obviously very unhappy with the replacement (and the mix) - lots of shaking head and grimacing- GREAT performance though - the synth lead intro is much better nowadays as Guy plays the whole thing live.

Too right. It really is a shame that this work of art isnt more widely appreciated.
