Alright, I admit it. I used to watch American Idol...Why? Because quite often the contestants were of a high standard (Taylor Hicks to name but one) the house band was excellent, and once in a while there was a gem like this! Here in England there isn't exactly an abundance of good music on television.

Listen to it and if you don't know already, know that Jeff Beck is an extraordinary talent - and that Kelly Clarkson really has what it takes.

I am a DIE HARD KC FAN. I have seen her in concert 5 times, met her 2 times.. been here since she first opened her mouth on idol... and THIS PERFORMANCE.... well this performance is something of a wonder that most humans will never experience in their lifetime. The raw emotion and sincerity this woman pours into this performance, is something from out of this world! I truly and whole heartily believe that Kelly Clarkson is the VOICE of our generation, and that this is only the beginning.

f***ing brilliant, chills , not one "run" in her performance. to all singers its about THE SONG not how you can show off your ability. Mariah used to sing way stronger until she got" run " happy and started whispering her lyrics. Kelly uses her voice to compliment this song so well the audience is compelled to applaude, TWICE, in the middle of it. Also love how the crowd is so captivated with her that you dont hear one clap until the last note drifts away wish i was there

Chokes me up every time i hear this. The songs from My December - "Maybe, Be Still, Yeah and Irvine", not enough words. She is not appreciated enough! She should record songs like "Up to the Mountain, Natural Woman, Stuff like that there, Why" and i'll buy it. She covers songs like NOBODY else. She is the ONE for me. Comparisons to Celine Dion notwithstanding. To me Celine Dion, though a Great Singer, sings word with an accent which puts me off (i am prepared for the brickbats now)

Every single moment of this performance is nuanced, but on a MUCH higher musical level than most, so maybe you aren't used to the true art of singing? I have played CM for many famous singers, and this girl has an incredible voice.

I'm wondering if the Kelly Clarkson fans here realise the significance of the guy she's performing with. Jeff Beck is a legend in the Rock Music. He is widely regarded as one the the 4 or 5 greatest rock guitarists ever. He can also play almost any style of music, jazz, blues, whatever. He is in Rock and Roll Hall of Frame-twice, once with Yardbirds and then as a solo artist. Notice the sublty way he plays here with such style and taste. He's my favorite guitarist.

Jeff Beck is one of the all time great rock guitarists. And he can also play blues and jazz as well. He isn't as famous as Eric Clapton because he doesn't sing (can't sing) but he is just as significant a force with the innovations he made. He is the guitar player''s guitar player. For the people who know music in his genre no one is more respected than Jeff Beck. If you ever get a chance to see him live, take it. You won't be disappointed. Watch some Ytube videos of him. He's amazing.

It's good to see that the younger people are appreciating good music. I must disagree with you about Chuck Berry. Berry wrote great guitar riffs but really wasn't a that great a player. He influenced R&R as much as anyone.

@sjcgriffiths They don't make them like Jeff Beck anymore. There have been just a handful of guitar players who have really changed R&R. Beck isn't as well know as Clapton or Hendrix but in a lot of ways he was just as influential. He was never a recognized name because he can't (and doesn't) sing and that's a great handicap. He has influenced many of the great guitarists of his era and has earned the recognition as the guitar player's guitar player. His music is for serious people.

Yes it does matter because it affects the song. She came out publicly and said she was sick when she sang this. It's not horrible but it's not amazing either. She didn't get sick on purpose. So that obviously affects her range and voice for the song.

He helped to revolutionize guitar playing and when Jimi Hendrix went to England, Beck & Clapton were the guys he wanted to meet. But Beck is not a household Name. He doesn't sing (or can't) so he had to take a different career path. He is a legend among guitar players and his influence is huge.
