@caltrainfan yes, I'm aware of that since I've used caltrain quite a bit, but the rear cars are not aerodynamic at all, Caltrain could save a lot of fuel by turning their engines around when going northbound. Maybe they're running such tight schedules that they don't have time to properly turn the trains around?
not to mention how dirty their engines get from all the smoke when going backwards...
@britoca if caltrain wanted to turn the trains around after each trip they would have to wye each and every train and i know for a fact in san francisco it would be virtually impossible because of the surrounding area and its the end of the line, and the same goes for san jose, except the end of the line part. Even if they did find a way to make a wye it would be much more expensive than running with a cabcar and engine, and in caltrain's financial state that's just not an option.
@sideslide23 Caltrain uses any available consists now these days. They try to use the Bombardier sets, but keep in mind they only have 5 sets, and there are 11 baby bullets during evening rush hour. And sometimes a few of those bombardier sets aren't ready for rush hour service.
@AmcalAJ pariently they are because of the $30 Milion doller defect, until they work on the high speed rail project in 2012, caltrain is cutting down services.
why do they run the trains backwards when northbound?
why don't they turn the engine around?

@britoca The northernmost car has a front window and cab control unit in it so the engineer can see in front of him and control the locomotive.
