  • Awesome job on the snow chains buddy

  • whats the diffrence between the xl-5 and the XVL

  • How about more zip ties? like 8 for a tire?

  • Where can i buy that chains????

  • You can buy snow tires for your rc trucks/cars. Just google it ; ). I have the rustler as well. The box says all electronics are waterproof, so I'm looking forward to trying mine in the snow too.

  • why don't you keep the body of the car on? Where can you get these cars?

  • We need another solution....... metal zipties???

  • do you have problems with rust?

  • what type of truck or car u would recomened in these type condition money dont matter

  • can the xl 5 take 19 turn motor!

  • @indianrc yes

  • would the 2011 bandit be good in the snow? would it break?

  • Cool cheap alternative to buying big tread tires

  • Thats kinda cool snow chains for your rc.

  • cool

  • hey that works great. I wish we had snow so I can do it too :0(

  • 3 cell lipo put race mod in go crazy

  • Where do you buy those rc chains

  • how did u do that?

  • @hokieman97 do what, exactly? make the chains? waterproof the car? drive it in the snow? Give me something to run with here...

  • @jolynsbass how did you waterproof the car?

  • @ncmpracer13 buddy if u buy it its already waterproof

  • 00:58 your esc isnt wateproof, it should say wateproof in blue under vxl3s D:

  • @xXShadowRejectsXx You guys should really do some research... the stock Traxxas VXL Rustler or Stampede or whatever are all waterproof. There aren't a lot of brushless systems out there that are not waterproof. Go on their website or watch other videos of people driving these things in bathtubs.

  • @ironm4id3n i did do my "research" check out the OLDER rustler vxl's they are NOT waterproof, hell the newer ones feature only wateproof escs, the reciever IS not enclosed at all.

  • what department is the chains located in at walmart cause i need some thanks

  • wow thats better then 4wd.

  • how did you protect the brushless motor?, the only way to water proof a VXL ESC is to take it apart and seal it. Even the body wont prevent a damaged esc

  • i was wondering, i also have a traxxas rustler vxl , and i was wondering if the snow would ruin any of the elecrical parts on the car. because i would think it would after the snow melts onit

  • thats not the vxl.....?

  • use the body and that wont happen

  • dude get a cover or if u have one use it

  • how do you not get the screws to rust?????????? please respond.

  • haha no more overheating!!! I thinik it would be smarter to keep the body on

  • fail chains, get new wheels.

  • i was jw if u whould be able to send me plans on how to make the chains

  • c¸a ne cogne pas sur des pieces

  • you should really up grade to gas its a little more in money but its grate fun if you know what to do with theme and you can do a lot more with theme to.

  • get the rigtht gearing and you can go faster

  • I like the way the snow built up in the car. It looks kindof like a little white buggy body. lol

  • snow chains for rc's... hmm

  • do the chains dent?

  • thats cool how long did the zip ties last

  • ever heard about sand paddle tires? also works fine on snow

  • @sKuLLcAndy7017 not as cheap as chains dude

  • @Xmoto16

    works better than those chains

  • what part of the country you from ? I live in eastern Montana. I do have a couple of nitro and those chains are a good idea. keep cool now .

  • dose it still work after all that snow in the car

  • @AustinCollins2 You bet. That's the beauty of waterproof electronics.

  • @jolynsbass So, if i coated my ESC inside and out with Liquid tape and cleaned off the heat-sink would it work in the snow without getting ruined by the water

  • what are the name of the chains from walmart just chains or what id like to know

  • hey great video me and my 2 boys like watching it!!! have you tryed sheet metal screws threw the tire? i'm a floridian so i don't know much about driving in snow, but i can tell it was very very cold when you filmed!! lol we can't wait for next years video!!

  • this makes me want to live in a place where it snows

  • Can i run a lipo on the XL-5?

  • kind of a slowish car... how fast does it go on a real road?

  • @Thatpyroguy In the video, it's on 6-cell nimh (and sometimes in training mode). Now that I have 2S and 3S lipo power, it goes *lots* faster. Lipo is crazy strong - I can pop wheelies in training mode on only 2S lipo!

  • @Thatpyroguy which one?

  • Lol. My mistake while driving in the snow: Not cleaned properly ^^

Yesterday spent a few hours getting everything to work agean. XD

  • nice vid check out my

  • 3:02 lol its goin down

and u should put the body on less snow inside lol great vid

  • is he driving from inside

  • Some of the filming is done from inside(my wife running the camera), but I never drive my car onto the street from inside, since I wouldn't be able to see or hear cars coming.

  • cool i have one two nice

  • Oh sorry i have not seen that you have two ones. I will try that out on my three e-revos and e-revo vxl.

  • more zipties i did it with my 18t and it was fun they got alot of grip

  • if its thick snow or ice put tap screws in the wheels they work exquizardly

  • how do you switch it on and off from training mode and race mode

  • read the instructions manual and you'll everything or u can just search on the internet!

  • i figured it out now lol the instructions these days suck

  • BACON THESE ARE ELECTRIC U IDIOT

  • well it is all water broof u idiot come on look it up

  • Baconbrgrshawty.

Someone tried to tell u that your nitro engine wasn't water proof. U should listen!!! I wana see you send it into a puddle that covers the carb completly. Why do you think real vehicles such as a land or range rover have the intake above the damn car roof?? Your smrt, missing the A. Or just 12.

  • how do you clean the snow out of the body and stuff after you drive in the snow?isnt that bad for it?

  • Just rinse it under the faucet in the sink (I actually use the power sprayer on the side - but turn the pressure way down.) No - it's not bad for it - it's waterproof!

  • @jolynsbass oh i have the old one thats not waterproof. thats why i was wondering haha

  • Mine is too! You can still rinse it off. I've got the inside electronics treated with tc-11, and the body of the ESC has a gasket to help keep out water.

  • @jolynsbass really? can you make a video of how?

  • get a gas one for the power

  • Two problems: 1) No such thing as a waterproof nitro rc exists.

    2) Brushless motors are way more powerful and faster than nitro engines.

  • lies: 1) my nitro is water proof and when i get my cam ill show u.

2)some brushless motors are. (cant wait for mine).

  • no nitro engines are not waterproof.you can make them go through water but if you flood them they will stall unlike electric. no electric is not more powerful and faster than nitro engines.some maybe are but they are not faster or more powerful

  • This is not meant to be a nitro vs. electric video. Any more ridiculous suggestions for me to get a nitro, or why nitro would be better will be deleted.

  • what rc is that?? Because it has no power at all.

  • Can anyone on here answer my question? Icurrently have the rustler vxl model, not the waterproof vxl they just came out with like a few month ago. What can i do to waterproof it. Also i heard if your current vxl breaks you can call in and they will send you a waterproof vxl for free? is this true? thanks for the help.

  • I bought a waterproof servo case and put my servo in it. Plus, I treated the servo, receiver and ESC and motor with TC-11 on the inside (corrosion preventer, works great). I sealed up the receiver with sticky tack and also put a balloon around it. No problems running it in all kinds of water/mud/snow.

And yes, if your current VXL ESC breaks, traxxas will replace it with a waterproof one. If your still under warranty - it'll be free, but if your out of warranty there is a nominal charge.

  • how do you know if your still under the warranty, how long does the warranty last?

  • traxxas is the only rc that has waterproof esc and servo ,reciever box .

  • the xl5 and vxl models come waterproof stock out of the box.

  • Both of my RC's were purchased before traxxas made the big switch to waterproof models. So, I had to take steps to waterproof them.

  • thats really fun riding up on the snow bank like that. here in n.michigan the banks right now are like 4 ft and i can go for like 30 ft side ways like that.awesome vidoe.

  • Nice - what'd you use to waterproof it. Have a B4 w/ 5700 mamba motor and esc. Would hate to burn the speed control or the receiver

  • IT sounds like the chains are slipping when you hit the gas. U might want to make them tighter

  • how did u waterproof ur xl5 ?

  • can any rc car go in the snow?

  • @theReper I reckon yes, but it depends on the car and the snow. Obviously the Rustler can do it in that stuff t=right there. A bigger truck with 4x4 can go in stuff a little deeper. And I think that even a touring car or sports car could go around on ice if it was relatively smooth and you put some smaller size chains or studs on the tires. ;-)

  • if there water proof :P

  • Nice very Nice A+++++Thank you for Video

  • I hate flipping my truck for two reason, on the embarrassment of knowing you flipped it, and two it's always really far away when it happens, and you have to go get it.. lol

  • thats why you get a rustler they rarly flip lol

  • ok thx

  • i meant savage-x and also try some sand tires

  • i have a savage-c and i drove it in rain and not much traction anything for that? email me plzzzz

  • @ashnbrandon1 better tires

  • put them on the front too so they will grab better laterally

  • @markhead12345 if you take zipties or somthing of the sort around the center of the tire (or two of them with a little bit of space between them) it should hold the rear end of the car in line a little better

  • sorry didnt see you answered my question already. so you waterproofed your esc by spraying TC-11insideof it? thats all it takes? i dont realy know what TC-11 is but i'll defenitely look that up!

  • That, in combination with the gasket around the case, and it's pretty much water proof. TC-11 is a really good anti-rust/corrosion water displacer that lasts a really long time. I ran a new truck this winter in the snow just 1 time, and I noticed afterwards some rust on the screws and shock shafts. So, I put some tc-11 on them, and now the rust is gone!

  • Comment removed

  • Takes a bit of practice, but you'll get the hang of it. The "drifting" is mostly a problem when there is very little snow (mostly bare cement) or when it's very icy. Just go easy on the throttle, and you'll soon have the handling down.

  • im getting the rustler vxl tomorrow, cant wait!!!! this vid is sweet im gonna make a snow one soon too

  • what r the chains called and how do i get them that size please tell me

  • They are chains I bought at walmart - they are intended for hanging plants. The package says "#16 jack chain, Zinc" it that helps at all.

  • also how did u keep them stayin on the wheels were any other modifications done to the chains

  • Nothing else - just linked them together with pliers. Occasionally a link will wear out/break (mostly running on concrete), so you just replace the single link. very easy to take chains off / put them on, too.

  • nice chains!! i took some old tires and put them over my current ones and put spikes on them. check them out on my profile

  • howd u waterproof the vxl?

  • I put some TC-11 on the circuit boards. The newer VXLs are already waterproof right out of the box. (The older ones mostly were anyway - I don't think they changed much of anything for the newer design!)

  • i was planning to cover the whole inside of the esc with silicone and baloon the revever and servo. you think that will work

  • That sounds like a good plan - should keep your electronics safe. Don't forget to put something like wd-40 on your screws/pins/links so that they don't rust!

  • yeh tnx sounds like a plan haha if i make a vid on it ill let u no

  • Cool, and nice info m8

  • how you make the whelie on carpet????

it was the gearing or the chains???

  • Good motor and good traction...

It was with an S600 Electrifly brushed motor, geared fairly high, but with enough oomph to pop up the front end. That was a good motor until the spring when it kicked the bucket. I should've cleaned it more often!

  • Cool chains-- nice job!

  • nice idea with this things

  • lol try a body next time

  • try using sand paddles that should work good.... my friend uses his waterproof XL-5 with paddles in the snow and it does wheelies!!!!!

  • That was great!

  • Cool video!! Thanks ..

  • in wich country is this? : ) 5/5

  • USA, southeast Idaho.

  • very nice looks like a good time to me...i just got done making my rustler bullerproof i bought everything aluminum i could and a roll cage it looks bad ass, im going out tommoro for a test run!!

  • why does everyone like aluminum plastic is the way to go

  • cause plastic cracks and snaps easy? try pulling off massive jumps or having crazy crashes with a plastic chassis and it wont last long

  • well aluminum bends and adds weight. plastic on the other hand bounces back. im all for aluminum chassis but when you start getting aluminum A arms, bumpers, skid plates, shock towers it all adds weight . try rpm parts there durable and arent heavy. Any ways youll get more air with plastic parts because there lighter

  • You tried aluminium parts? theyre incredibly light! thats why they use it instead of stronger metals, it can bend if you hit it hard enough, in which case you can bend it back, just in my experience crashing with the same force to bend alu usually completely snaps plastic

  • you tried rpm plastic? its lighter than aluminum and cheap enough to buy if a piece breaks

  • if you take a look at some of the videos these cars take an awful lot of knocking about and theyre fine

  • Are the diffs on these locked?

Nice vid btw gave me some inspiration for my next project.

  • Not locked, but with enough grease for a limited slip feel. Thanks for the comment.

  • i have a recomendation, cause i had this same problem, except i didnt get the metal chains, i got the proline sand paw tires, there just paddles, but the grip better than anything i have tried, but its not winter anymore, but try it!!

  • did the chains come looking like a ladder

  • No, it came like all regular chain does - in a line. I used pliers to open some links and create the ladder shape.

  • thats awsome im getting the waterproof rustler and cant wait

  • Could you do a video of your truck in the dry doing some bashing and speed runs. I have the S-600 in my Wheely King and wanted to see how it performed in a Rustler

  • waterproofed?

  • sweet chains i made studded tires one time with those flat thumb tacks through from the inside and some bicycle tubing and rubber patch glue to hold them in worked awsome for a few years in the snow before i turfed em

  • were you running on lipos?

  • 6-cell nimh

  • you should get some lipos

  • I'm willing to accept donations!

  • lol ya dont expect any from me

  • why did you drive the vxl in snow its not water proof

  • Did you even read the description?

  • no..lol how did you water proff the vxl?

  • just get paddles

  • LOL @ 3:00, that was just sweet as hell! I'm getting my first hobby grade RC in two days, Rustler XL-5. Forgive me everyone for asking a dumb question I have yet to research, but what are "turns" in reference to brushed motors?

  • It refers to the number of turns the copper wire is wrapped within the motor itself,

lower turns means more rpm and amp draw (requires better battery and drains it quicker)

while higher turns means lower rpm, less amp draw, and longer run times.

    Consider 8-15 turns high performance/drain,

    16-20 medium performance/drain,

and over 21 turns low performance/drain.

Faster motors generally need higher gearing,

or the Electronic Speed Control might get too hot and burn up.

  • Thanks, that helps a lot! In fact I just upgrades the XL-5 ESC and 550 12T Titan motor on my Rustler to the VXL ESC and brushless motor. It was geared stock at 23/90 and I geard it now (with available gears from the box) at 26/86 and I took the low-voltage protection off because my car wouldn't run with it on and a 6 cell battery, but it runs awesome now, just heats up quickly. What would you consider to be a good gearing for on and off road with per say...a 7 or 9 cell Ni-Mh battery?

  • The temperature of the battery, ESC and motor is the only way to come up with the correct gearing.

Overgearing makes stuff hotter, undergearing makes things cooler (The harder the work, the higher the temp)

Try 23t pinion with the 86 tooth spur perhaps?

Run through a full charge, and feel the motor, battery and ESC

Warm is perfect, hot (Is uncomfortable to touch for 2-3 seconds) is not good (Solder can melt from the wires, magnets loose power)

Try smaller pinion or larger spur if it runs too hot

  • I perhaps should clarify the gearing stuff,

I realized it is kind of "fuzzy".

To make it cooler, go with larger spur, or smaller pinion gear (Makes it easier for the motor to turn, increases acceleration, lowers amp draw, increases lifetime of all the components, it runs cooler, increases runtimes since the motor draws less current)

A standard 540 brushed motor, for example,

draws around 2-8 amps with light load,

but a whopping 80 amps when stalled (totally blocked)

Can kill an ESC.. I know ;)

  • hean8209 forgot to mention that higher turn motors also have more torque than their lower turn counter parts.

  • Higher torque on a higher turn? I'm understanding (probably incorrectly) that the reference of a 'high turn' motor is going to have a lower numerican value (i.e. 21 turns versus 8 turns)?

  • High turns means the wire is wrapped around more times. This causes it to have more torque and longer runtimes.

  • wow that why they make body's

  • did you actually make the battery? how. is that costom gearing for the xl5?

  • I did make the battery. There are plenty of how-to tutorials, including a few really good ones here on youtube.

The gearing is not stock - it is also not a stock motor. It a more powerful(higher wattage) 19T motor, so the gearing works differently than with the stock XL-5 motor. It is able to wheelie from a standing start geared 28/83 on only 6 cells! It's not as good as brushless by any means, but it's still a definite upgrade from the Titan 12T.

  • is the stock vxl ESC water proofed?

  • It is not waterproof, per se, but it is water resistant. I added to the protection it gets from its rubber seal by opening it up and applying TC-11 (anti-corrosion agent) to the circuit boards. As long as I don't take it swimming in a pool, I'm confident it is waterproof enough. (I've run it at least 20-30 times in the snow so far...)

  • the chain is sooo useful~~~

  • is the vxl esc water proofed?

  • how do you drive it in the snow wouldent it get messed up
