I think it's not so much Republican pandering to the religious right (though that's hardly a good thing), but that education is the key. People who are well-educated learn to think critically. They learn to assess evidence, evalutate it, not ignore any of it, and try to fit it into a model that explains it all in a cogent way that will be able to be demonstrated to anyone. This used to be valued by all--even Republicans used to want to be intellectually respectable. It's essential to democracy.
