Russia said it plans to build 100 ton enhanced new version of the missile to replace this one so it will be able to penetrate US missile defense systems.
Russia has so many really interesting and innovative launch vehicles (and they were all designed at least 30 years ago)!
America was behind in the space race at the beginning, overtook the Russians briefly in the late 60's and early 70's, but ever since then, Russia has been clawing back the advantage, and I believe today that Russia stands far ahead of America in terms of space technology, and also in terms of the spirit of exploration.
@TehCodeMonkey The fuel is dimethyl hydrazine. The oxidizer is nitrogen tetroxide. It's the same combination of propellants that US missiles of the same vintage used. This is a great example of beating swords into plowshares. It is good to see these things carrying spacecraft instead of warheads.
@YouTheory@77777771226 no what your looking at is called "Shock diamonds" this is not from any chemical agent but from differences in pressure. the r-36 is a 2 stage rocket burning liquid propellant (hydrogen and oxygen) you can use emission spectroscopy to find out what is in the propellant because every element when burned has a unique wave length of light emitted. emission spectroscopy was first used on our sun and hence the discovery of hydrogen...
@smeghead666 It seems to me that a entire country split up and changed it politcal stance in the early 90s. Reagan gave them a arms race. We simply out built them. Although the threat of a nuclear detonation is higher today. We no longer have the strength we did in the 80s.
@ExtremePeppers indeed but we are still finding russian nuclear subs roaming into our territory bears flying into our airspace monthly that need scaring off and so on.
the berlin wall may have fallen but the cold war is still simmering away underneath, and with north korea and Iran wanting to get nuclear it shows no signs of freezing anytime soon
@HeildemKrieg Ehehehe...100m up 100m down when delivering 15-25M... who needs accuracy? Russians are not gay! Having not used GPS systems for guidance made their missiles actually more reliable. GPS systems are the first to be blinded in such a war scenario most earth satellites will be targetted - there up there already satellite destroyers... remember that satellite destroyed by "an old Russian """uncontrolled""" satelite"? Eh, that was simply a warning!
@aviomaster IF you notice at 0:06 there is a small part of the rocket that pulls away at the bottom, these are the rocket engines that lift the giant rocket out of the silo, and they only burn for about 4 seconds, then another rocket fires and pulls it away so the main rocket engines of Satan can ignite and begin it's flight. Pretty amazing technology.
@juanlmesl Yes, the missile could launch a maximum of 20 warheads, but was only deployed with 10. The silo could be reloaded with another missile if the Americans failed to attack it during an exchange. This is the weapon that opened the 'Window of Vulnerability". This system drove the development of GPS so the US could conduct an attack against the SS-18 with submarine launched missiles thus minimizing warning time.

A terrible weapon. Deservedly nicknamed 'Satan' by the U.S.
Mod 2 version: 25 MT; for comparison, the weapon that flattened Hiroshima, was only 13-18 KT
Enough to spoil anyone's day....
