Its an alien. An alien baby, even though its probably been asleep on the ocean floor for millions of years. The Tagruato oil drill Chai Station awoke the monster. The monster destroyed the oil rig then started searching for its mother. Whom probably had left the planet or had died. When the monster was swimming it probably recognized the Tagruato symbol on the oil rig and destroyed it. That would probably be when the movie began. Don't listen to crap from the manga the manga was stupid.

They weren't babies, they were actually creatures other than clover than clung on to his back and was sucking his blood. Much like parasites in the ocean (although for the life of me i cant remember their name). These things cling onto animals stomachs for left over food that leaves its mouth. They were actually annoying it, so it started scratching its back on buildings and pulling them off. Its funny becuase the clover is actually a sea creature.
