If I had to guess I´d say they weren´t the target of the attack, because I didn´t notice any shots landing near them. As for the gun down: That´s actually quite inteligent, seeing that their guns have no camo. The black siluette of a gun is the first thing you can spot in most situations. So raising the gun without the intention to fire would be dumb. But that´s just my guess, and I could be wrong. I don´t know what american soldiers are trained to do in those situations.
