this album is so much better than anything else that opeth ever did. I kind of find that as they got more "progressive" they kind of got more mopey at the same time. This album's dark and sounds pretty technically impressive, (I don't know much from metal technique though) but it still has a kind of sense of playfulness that takes the pretentious edge off and sets it apart from other heavy prog bands

I haven't listened to Opeth in a while, although I don't remember Still Life being a lot of fun to listen to. Really Deliverance is what stands out for me as being bad and pretentious, but I can't think of an Opeth album other than this one that I really enjoy listening to anymore. Maybe I'm all wrong and should revisit some of them though, I've been wrong before about music :P

@sorrysonofa It's still very progressive, but it has more black metal qualities to it, and much softer acoustic parts, if your looking for the atmospheric, emotional stuff the first albums are definitely the best, but if you're looking for the very proggy Dream Theater-like stuff the later albums might be your cup of tea. :)

@kvssravi Iron Maiden was actually one of the first bands that ultilised twin guitar harmonies in metal and influenced a lot of bands in the process, including Opeth. The problem is that many bands from the Gothenburg scene, also known as Melodic Death Metal or Melodeath (Dark Tranquility, Arch Enemy, In Flames etc.) used twin guitar harmonies extensively and copied each other's style, to the point that most of them ended up sounding the same.

First of all, if they had ripped them off, it would've had to have been within the same year. They recorded this album in '94, the same year "Basket Case" was released.

Second...it doesn't really sound that much like the riff. It's faster and it's used only as a portion of the riff, unlike the Green Day song, which is slower and used as the meat of the song.

And third, I doubt Opeth even cared about Green Day.

I don't have a beef with Green Day. They're a great pop band. But...no.
