JUST MISSED!!! "Little Red Rooster" just missed making the Billboard's Hot Top 10 chart; it peaked at No. 11 and spent a total of 10 weeks in the Hot Top 100 in 1963...
The Rolling Stones' version of this song appeared on their 1965 U.S. album "The Rolling Stones Now". The gentleman who wrote the song, Willie Dixon, included it on his 1970 album "I Am The Blues"...
I've gotta agree that Sam Cooke's little Red Rooster is far & away the best. I may be prejudiced. I picked up the 45 at a young age on a discount rack with no idea who or what it was, and then decades later got the CD of NIGHT BEAT, yeah, just finally checked out the Stones version and it didn't change my mind. Big Mama Thornton is good, don't get me wrong, I just like Sam Cooke better, maybe because I grew up with it, that old 45 from the discount rack, 11 cents well spent.
After hearing the Howlin' Wolf and Grateful Dead versions, this version sounds flippant, almost cursory with its quick layer of gloss over the lyrics. I like Sam Cooke but I don't like this.
@harryf200 I should have added to the list the original, by the guy who wrote it - Willie Nelson ... even then, I still prefer the Howlin' Wolf cover the best!
@GarwinEugeneW wrote: "Ray Charles & Billy Preston are playing the organ. Sam calls they name at the bridge of the song." Actually it was studio musician Ray Johnson on the piano (brother of studio tenor sax man Plas Johnson). Guys like that almost NEVER get the credit they deserve, so tossing credit to someone famous like Ray Charles is an easy mistake.
Probably the best version of this song. The album this comes from, 'Night Beat', is a true gem. Almost every cut is a keeper. The sound quality is as good as or better than anything Cooke ever recorded.
