The Note: This great book should really be read by everyone. It is difficult to describe why it so great because it both teaches and inspires. You really just have to read it. We think it is so good that it demands to be as accessible as possible. Once you've finished it, we're sure you'll agree. In fact, years ago, we would offer people twenty dollars if they read the book and didn't think it was completely worth their time. Of all the people who took us up on it, no one collected.
This book gives hope to the common people. Sometimes you feel like you can't make a difference in the issues of our lifetimes. But Mr. Zinn shows that most of the major social advancements where fought for and started by common people, and not till those people struggled, died, and rebel did the elites join the struggles and got their names in the history books. Power doesnt relinquish anything with out a fight. If we dont fight for the pressing issues of our times then we will continue to sufer
They will teach such history in the schools. As the great Noam Chomsky would put it, dont forget that "educational system is a system of indoctrination of the young".
Does the government fear us? Or do we fear the government? When the people fear the government, tyranny has found victory. The federal government is our servant, not our master! -Thomas Jefferson
"Activists in the U.S. are like the “tank man” in Tiananmen Square in China. We have always had to jump in front of the ship of state to keep it on a self-correcting course. Whether the issue was slavery, labor rights, women’s suffrage, civil rights, Vietnam, Central America, or Iraq, it is the determined protests of those who will settle for nothing less than justice or peace that have altered the course of history.
The moral arc of the universe doesn’t bend toward justice by gravity."
Great historian and author......i have read this several times and it still moves me.This is without doubt......a real People's history, and i'm scottish.
One of the more important history books written in this country. Regardless of whether one is a liberal democrat or conservative republican-and Iam neither-this is a much needed book that has placed the emphasis where it belongs-on people.
but the rich ones of the world, they are those that gave(lent ) the government of Ronald Reagans, 1.5 trillones of dollars for purchase of arms (guns)and technology for the war, this money comes of the called evil state bank of the federal reserve that is property of the family rothschild through its mandators. bu they do not want to that is known. PLEASE WAKE UP.
God I so miss this man already ;-(!!!!!!!!!!!!! So greatful for his legacy.... still so sad :-(! I hope Chomsky sticks around a lot longer... Vidal ... all these old wise men... Ellsberg... gosh I wish they could live forever... but well... they left us their books right?
He fought in WW2 and became a pacifist. He was white in the south and lost his job for fighting racism. He was Jewish and denounced Israel's abuses. He was American and denounced American violence at home and abroad.
He always refused to get involved in the ideology of power. He always asserted his solidarity with people, not power.
A true real life hero, the sort that the media loves to ignore, just in case working class people start having ideas and engage in a productive and meaningful life, serving us and not just the self, just like Professor Howard Zinn.
@theH0UNDSofD00M Unfortunately I only heard about this man this year, and to even greater appeal I only began reading his works the week before today. He truly is a brilliant man, and I can truly understand why he has had such appeal to honest seekers of history.

They Live, not just a stupid 80's movie after all.
@ColumbiaCowboy: How did you develop the very foolish thought that out of all Gods that wimpy god-substitute Jehovah, who bears the name of a deity as if a channel should be called the sea, and his most feeble son Jesus Christ, the prince of peace (I hate the word!), are the true gods and all the others are false ones? I will quote Nietzsche in answer to this outrage at once:
Less than 300 of us made it. Oh my god though, this book should be read by everybody (in and out of the USA). It is TOTALLY worth however long it took to listen to.
No, this audio starts about half way through the book starting with the civil rights movement. And it is followed by an update by the author since the original publishing of the work in 85.

Duh, Howard Zinn the idiot. This has li' to do with public school perversion, it's an example of the ignorant, pot-head voice of the 60's regurgatated afresh to excite the gay, pot headed moron. For the lost college type looking for identity. Zin the pin head writing a book is amazing enough, but his "stick to the other side of a coin crap" makes me laugh at his silly exsistance.

"America blows" he wants to say, but being the fem bitch that he is he remains, nice. Yes he and that mono-tone nice voice is too n-i-c-e to make a stand [fag]. Ouch, the v-i-c-t-i-m-s; the suffering Indians, the minorities, Vietnam, family values, Jesus faith, nasty capitalizm? How wicked we are. I am so glad other nations don't lie or as nasty?
Youre right let's continue to tell the story from the rich, heterosexual, white, and male point of view because it is sooooooo neglected. Heaven forbid we listen to someone else. It's really sad that your only "counter argument" is anyone who agress is a "pot head"or a "fag". Not a very convincing way to prove a point at all.
Easy does it, collapseofthedollar. I grow weary of the high and mighty attitude that puts down public school. I taught history for years and the biggest problem is not bias but kids who can but WON'T read. I don't want to hear how public schools are misleading kids. Try it yourself if you think it's a cakewalk.
I have to say i was not a big reader in public school until 12th grade. The reason for that and i think many young students would agree is because you can only listen to the same broken record accounts for so long before you grow tired.I wasnt awakened until senior year when I had a teacher who told the story from the other side.Students dont only learn from reading but lectures and assignments so that is not the only problem.History is not taught as something effecting us today in some cases.
in public school they gloss over everything bad that happened. EVERYTHING. In college I took an upper division American history class and relearned the history of the united states. there are a whole lot of things that are simply omitted in public school
This book should be used in elementary school teaching, kids should be taught the REAL history, not the glorified version they are taught. Kids need to know that our country was founded not with great moral standards, there were mass genocides by corrupt people using a corrupt book, the Bible, as its standard. I reccomend reading anything by Howard Zinn, he is a very intelligent and has the right view of society. He should be running our country. Id vote for him!

Fighting with testosterone and weapons in lieu of communication/language has NEVER worked, as it's only brought about death and destruction.
Surely we learn from our mistakes by looking back at thousands of years of ignorant behavior that doesn't work.
It's time to use our more sophisticated tools: education and communication.

public schools ARE misleading and indoctrinating kids. I not only experienced it firsthand, I see it all the time.
One example- a 7th grade teacher was discussing patriotism. she made a list of the things that are patriotic.
On the list: support the troops, mcdonalds, football.
Off the list- voting, dissent (the two most important aspects of citizenship).
This is just ONE example- there are countless others.
Have a nice day.
