You know, Taiwan history reminds me history of Ukraine. Western powers say to some Ukrainians that they are not russians on the basis of language. I know russian and perfectly can understand ukrainian, cuz it is the russian dialect!
I'd like to discuss this on a linguistic basis. To my knowledge, Slavic languages are much closely related than other language groups. While Chinese "dialects" are in fact chinese "languages" that the differences are greater than some language groups. For example a basic word "I" are wo, gua, ngo, ngai, gu... I don't know how divided it is for slavic languages, but I think the situations are a bit difference
@TheCentralasian it's different.northern chinese can't understand southern chinese language.but it is true that ukrainian is same with russian,i can use russian to communicate with ukrainian?it'll save my some time from learning one more language
