I watched all the Super Bowls from the first until 2011. I plan to watch many more Super Bowls to come. The greatest Super Bowl in my life and in my opinion was Super Bowl III. The press was giving Joe and his Jets hell because Joe put his reputation on the line and predicted the Jets would defeat the Colts. The sports talking heads mocked Joe. It was absolutely awesome when the Jets defeated the Colts and against all odds and sports' talking heads, the Jets became Super Bowl III champs!
my bad on saying half those hits on Meredith would have just been penalties--the guy who said suspensions ejections and big fines has it nailed better than I did.
Howard to Joe Namath: "Do you think this team is better than the 1968 Jets?" "NO I DON'T, BUT I HOPE WEEB IS RIGHT". Joe was right, the 1970 Jets lost 7 of their first 8 games and finished 4-10.
@jseph1234567890 It definitely isn't Roone Arledge who says "Take tape!" in the opening. He doesn't look like that, not even then! I think you're right, it may be Chet Forte.
And yeah, that was Keith Jackson doing the promo. As noted, he was part of the MNF crew for that first year only. They tried to get Frank Gifford for MNF, but he was contracted to CBS for one more year in 1970.
@canadianblaster09 To the best of my understanding, Meredith took the place on the MNF broadcast team originally intended for Gifford, and it was on Gifford's recommendation. Arledge still wanted Gifford in the booth, and in 1971, when Gifford was available, Arledge decided to send Jackson back to college football rather than getting rid of Cosell or Meredith. Sadly, Arledge didn't handle it right.
Strange to see "normal" looking people in the stands at an NFL game. Girls with beehive hairdoos in dresses. Clean cut guys in short sleeve dress shirts and Buddy Holly glasses. It's a nice change from the beer-swilling, tattooed jackasses you get at the games these days. And I'm not just talking about the Raider Nation.
WOW, the old days, when the fans actually wore their actual street clothes to the game as opposed to their favorite player's jersey, team colors, novelty hats or face and body paint of team colors, logos or mascots.
Far far fewer tv commercials back in 70. You could actually follow the continuity of the game then, unlike today when they take a break every 5 minutes!
Interesting that Kapp is in a Vikings jacket since he never played for the Vikings again. He was traded to the Boston Patriots just before the 1970 season.
The opening theme was very different from what at the time was the marching-band music that was the usual NFL television theme music.
Hopefully, NFL Films will release a digitally-remastered version of this game .
Dig the fact that one of the sponsors was Marlboro Cigarettes. Three-and-a-half months later, cigarette advertising was banned from American television and radio.
@KingPurplePimp The truth was that Don Meredith was one of the NFL's premiere quarterbacks in the mid-to-late 1960's, before he suddenly retired at age 32. From all accounts, Meredith could have successfully played for a few more years, and maybe Dallas might have won a Super Bowl in the early 1970's with him.
YES!!!! someone finally posted the ORIGINAL Monday Night Football Theme. There is a video on Youtube with 115,000 views that is titled "Monday Night Football", it purports to be the original Monday Night Football theme but it is not. It is about 3 years after this one. THIS (the first minute of this video) is the original, and still the best, Monday Night Football Theme song/video. Thank you for posting!
So weird to see cigarette advertising on national tv.

Don't ya just love the hype? The Browns were 7-7 that year and the Jets were 4-10 but Jackson's talking about them as Superbowl contenders.

Just about all of those hits on Meredith would draw a 15 yarder in todays kindler, gentler NFL.

Notice that all the commercial sponsors are companies that are American and made the products here, cars, tires, airplanes, cigarettes, etc.

I guess they must have edited out that section from the interview where Joe Namath tells Howard he wants to kiss him.

More like Don Meredith's "lowlights" instead of "highlights" 5:35-6:14. At 5:48 you can hear Don say "I didn't know they were going to do that".
