You can use any file you want as a ringtone without jb. Use iTunes to create aac version (m4a), rename the m4a extension to m4r, and it's a ringtone.

I have a factory unlocked 3GS with 3.1 firmware installed. Can you confirm that 3.1 on an 3gs is not unlockable as of yet?

Should I downgrade to 3.0 to install hacked apps? Kinda sucks....

Also, do you know any programs that let me install custom ringtones etc using my mac? I need to jailbreak the phone for that too? ITunes only lets me use the tracks I have purchased... I want to use my own tracks.

If you have a factory unlocked, then you shouldn't need an unlock, just a jailbreak. And yes, the 3.1 jailbreak for the 3GS is not out yet, but it is on the way so if it was me I would just wait instead of downgrading to 3.0, but again that's your decision.

As for ringtones, I have an iPod touch instead of an iPhone so I really can't help you with that, sorry.

lmao no u cannot downgrade really, the only downgrading methods are based on cydia already. N so far it's not looking particularly good towards even jail-breaking it with all the crap apple keeps putting in the phone, honestly apple should fuck right off with their bullshit on the phone I payed for it and I cannot use it without a magical sim card?

3.1 hasn't been officially jailbroken yet, everyone will have to wait a bit until the dev team releases it.

As for if there are overheating issues with 3.1, it's hard to say. 3.1 may help, but it's still in beta so Apple probably hasn't finished doing whatever changes they are doing to it yet.

imo its all BS, all these guys saying it went extremely hot just so happens to have been on a "30min call"... as soon as i heard these rumors i grabbed my old silicone protector and wrapped my 32gb around it plugged it in and started running games on it while playing music on loudspeakers.. it did get hot but not to the point that you cant hold it or would cause thermal damage to the cover

If you have a black one, as far as I know you really shouldn't have any problems. Yeah it might get hot, but if you let it cool then it should be okay. I haven't really heard of phones getting so hot that they actually die, although it's definitely possible.

mine did the screen went off becuase of over heating. My old iphone 3gs was 16GB black and i got second one, this happend after few hours of purchasing i was playing with gps. My first 3gs black 16GB did die because of overheating.
