i said it's basically(!) the same... i'm german, i speak english, spanish and a lil' bit of french and i'm able to understand most of it.
i teach german and used to teach a guy from brasil last summer and i was able to understand most of what he said. to me, portuguese sounds like a strong spanish dialect. it's like the difference between german and dutch or the 'german' they speak in switzerland.
