This appears to be a reworking of a worksong recorded by Alan Lomax at the Mississippi state pen'. The song was titled "Rosie" and performed by some inmates. Worth a listen if you like this.

True enough. Though just to be a smart arse, original lyrics were more like "stick to the promise gal, you made me, bring me my pardon tell her, n' I'll go free". Of course both work in their respective context.

now i must be the smart arse and say that the original lyrics are more to the effect of - stick to the promise gal you made me, won't gonna marry till i go free- i love that recording as well as most of Lomax's other collections. i was just reaffirming your suspicion that Nina's version is a reworking of the original prison work song ;-) The album recording of "Be My Husband" is INCREDIBLE highly recommended !!!
