  • i have cairo shootout on my 1988 mac SE. its kinda fun, but i dont really get it. by the way im now going to say "groovy" every time it boots up.

  • Steve jobs 1955-2011, thank you for Changing the world. :) <3

  • Global Communication FTW!!

  • Comment removed

  • Congrats on becoming a partner. Took them long enough lmao! I went through the same thing.

  • its going on ebay for £1,100.00!

  • Sorry to nitpick, but the mouse that the Macintosh used was different to the mouse that the Lisa used. The Lisa mouse had a smaller button at the top and a different input connection to the Macintosh.

  • @MegaCellProductions Correct, when referring to the original Lisa at least. But at 2:32 I was talking about the mouse from the Lisa 2/Mac XL/Mac Plus, which all use compatible mice to my knowledge.

  • @phreakindee hmm gonna try to play CoD MW3 On A windows ME with 80mb ram XD

  • Can someone help me out on minivmac when I try to run a game e.g every one on this list or some on macintosh garden through mini mac it says this disc is not a macintosh disk would you like to initialize it PLEASE HELP ME OUT it would be a massive help thank you

  • I had this exact system growing up and I remember playing some sort of vampire or dracula game, anyone remember what it was called?

  • Well the mac couldn't multi-task however the Lisa could run up to 4 simultaneously, it was a more powerful machine and was apparently used buy nasa at one stage.

  • MAN YOU THE BEST INTRO EVER!

  • I own of these, they make great bookstops!

  • Excellent review - love the hipster diss.

  • What's the intro music from?

  • Woo! Tetris

  • R.I.P. Steve Jobs

  • can you send me an mp3 of the 8-bit intro song?

  • now that you mentioned the mini vmac, can you gimme a link to the images

  • even thogh you can get theses on ebay amazon and stuff its still amazing that you have all these old and new cmputers

  • @phreakindee are they rare? The cheapest I've ever seen is $9800

  • was the guy you bought it from one of those sweater wearing hipsters?

  • @charger334 Well, he was wearing a sweater.. Hipster? Nah.

  • Where can i get that "MS-DOS" shirt that you're wearing??

  • @MrGoomba909 Grabbed it on eBay from a random shady t-shirt vendor!

  • @phreakindee you realize someone probably died in that right? lol

  • Although I absolotely HATE Macintosh computers...

R.I.P. Steve Jobs, your influence is undeniable

  • @Alevamltd Without Steve, there would be no Windows.

  • @GizmoFan1 , it's kind of hard to say that. The GUI was simply the natural progression of the computer. The likely path would have been windows would have been release at a later date, but honestly one can't say either way.

  • @Alevamltd Hate all you want but if you use Windows or any GUI operating system, you're a hypocrite. They wouldn't exist without the Mac.

(Also forget about bringing up the tired Zerox point. They never took the GUI seriously. They made printers. The GUI was legally licensed to Apple who actually made a product for the public).

  • @Danny77uk How about Visi On for IBM pc's ? its from 1983 before MacOS and I don't think that they "ripped off" the Lisa OS, I mean its almost impossible to make a OS/GUI in that amount of short time, really its not hard to come up to make a OS more user friendly.

  • is 128k heavy?

  • @theanthony345 128 kilobytes, thats the ram amount in that mac

  • @MCLover1337 i mean like is it heavy to left

  • In Jobs We Trust. Tacky as shit.

  • M0100 M0110. I love simple model numbers that are actually possible to remember...unlike something like Model:SR48673GJDF6

  • Did anybody else notice that at 1:25, the two men on opposite sides look like the Mac and PC guys from the Apple commercials? :P

  • you're cute.

  • steve jobs is already dead

  • I got one for complete with manuals for 10$ at an auction.however it doesn't seem to hold any more internal data wich I guess must be from the silly battery lacated at the back.and floppys I inserted in didn't seem to be recognized with usual pc diskettes ...

  • Did Steve Jobs life flash before his eye's before he died? Nope Apple don't support flash.

  • Didn't mac hipsters not come out until the late 90s?

  • MS-DOS T-Shirt on a Mac review?xD

  • Wow:D Phone Cord...

  • Can you make a tutorial how to write the images to a 400k disk??

  • Wonderful review. I'm hoping to acquire one someday as display piece for its historical value. :)

  • The libertarian joke's funny because I'm libertarian...

Hmm, maybe I'm more offended... nah.

  • @TehGamersGarage I am as well, so no worries... it was more self-deprecating than anything!

  • @phreakindee You're a libertarian?

Hell, I loved you before knowing that, now I'll marry you. Except I'm a dude. A straight one. VERY straight. Or at least I thought I was very straight until I wrote this comment.

You get what I'm trying to say.

  • @phreakindee Not to go off on too much of a political tangent here, but don't you think libertarianism is more than a little short sighted and dangerous in the long term? Wouldn't a nationalized democratic socialist state like Sweden be better? Canadian here, we're stuck in the middle of both worlds.

  • You sound a lot like MattsMacintosh...

  • @MrHonwe Dude, go take a listen to Knightwing (or just Kwing). Sounds similar to him, as well.

  • the prices of these have shot though the roof on ebay since steve jobs passed. kinda regretting not buying one when I had the chance. doubt ill have one anytime soon now lol

  • 1:26 May Steve Jobs rest in peace.

  • like this if you saw the daleks and know what doctor who is at 7:04

  • MS DOS shirt, thats ballin'

  • Nice review, which would be better for gaming a Macintosh or a Apple IIGS?

  • @ATARI800XLfan IIGS, absolutely. The original Mac 128 and 512k were awful for gaming. A IIGS is basically like an Atari ST or an Amiga in terms of capabilities, plus it plays all the Apple II classics. The Mac didn't really become a decent option for gaming until the SE, at least in my experience.

  • you showed a lisa 2 -.-

  • @pokeyoshi3 *gasp* the HORROR, the AUDACITY!

    Whoops.

  • & MAY ITS LEGACY CONTINUE THROUGH SUBURBAN CULTURALLY AWARE SWEATER WEARING HIPSTERS, TODAY AND FOREVER MORE IN THE NAME OF STEVE JOBS. AMEN

  • back 2 the future!

  • nice evil dead reference

  • lol gui its g-u-i as that a joke?

  • @insecur No joke, it's just another way to say it. I've heard it said that way for 20 something years, but a lot of people also say each letter individually. It's like ISA, IDE, SATA, and a bunch of other computer terms, different people say it differently.

  • @phreakindee Ok lol I just though it sounded a bit strange because ice always heard it as g-u-i take care :)

  • @insecur been said that way for years and years and years

  • @devastaticon I know I know. I've always heard it spelled out like that so yea.

  • Loved my first Macintosh and now have a Quadra 605 which is my vintage Mac but still looking to collect more.

  • listen, i want an old computer that connects to the internet ( preferibly apple) thats cheap and can be bought on Amazon. what would you recomend? ps i subscribed

  • @KennyBare I don't know about Amazon, but you can grab any old Power PC and toss an ethernet adapter in there with no big hassle (if it doesn't already have one). I have a Power Mac 7300/200 with OS8 and it works nicely enough for Internet, and still does a lot of the classic OS stuff.

  • @phreakindee ok im kind of a nube when it comes to computers. im 15 and i need a computer for school. all i ever do is use the internet and microsoft word, power point etc.. i know that apple is best for the internet so like whats a good computer before the imac g3 that can connect to the internet.

  • @phreakindee Acorn Electron

  • Would the 512K be a good choice? I want a retro looking beige (not platinum) mac, but I want to run games like Shadowgate and Deja Vu and Shufflepuck Cafe.

  • @TeamRocketReviews I'd say the Mac Plus or Mac SE is your best bet for those games. The 512k is still a better choice than the 128k due to the extra RAM, but it's still limited in the same ways as the 128.

  • Thanks these are awesome videos, i learned a lot about all the old computers you have reviewed. but what i don't understand is, how did you get those computers for so cheap!? I have seen ibm 5150s going for over 900 dollars US.

  • @DaBigbobo558 I guess I just get lucky! I don't buy the first ones I come across, that's for sure. I keep looking until I find an affordable machine.

  • @phreakindee I really want an IBM 5150, IBM XT, or IBM AT. What's the cheapest you've ever seen a working one go for? I don't want to pay anything over 100 dollars, unless it comes with a lot of really good stuff (monitor, keyboard, joysticks, disks, cards, etc.).

  • @TeamRocketReviews I got my 5150 for $10, $30 shipped. It was dirty, but working. Keyboard was another 30, monitor was 70.

  • @phreakindee So thats 130 dollars? Is a find like this relatively common?

  • I have a Mac, but I drive a BMW. I do like somewhat obscure music though, as opposed to mainstream. But that's just because what's on the radio usually sucks. If I cared enough to vote, it'd probably be libertarian (or any group which pushes for 'small' government; especially if I were a Yank).

  • heyn hey aple mac -what? -virus :D

  • When did they introduce the Internet to Macs?

  • Umm guys don't forget the amiga and its interface inspired all of them.Dan

  • @chairuser4 The Amiga didn't come until some years *after* the the Xerox Star, Apple Lisa and Mac 128. Did it retroactively inspire people in the past or something?

  • @phreakindee ,I think that style of interface is just the logical one, thats why they are so smiler, but your right,I love both mac and amiga, the xerox star was really neat,I had a atari computer to,wish amiga would come back though it was neat, and it could really develop into a modern os,but in need god money and development, and the law suits to stop, lol, but to be hones the modern mac really kinda blows it way, wish we just had more choice for computing and os,but bill sues everybody, lol

  • i found five of these unopened threw them away :(

  • Why do i idol steve jobs? i love him more than jesus.

  • press 4

  • I have that same mousepad. I still have it after 20 years for some reason.

  • Thanks for the informative and well made review. Though the idea that Jobs or the culture of Apple promotes libertarian political thought is an odd statement to make.

  • @Shimmed It was somewhat of a joke, rather than a genuine idea. Me and some friends started noticing that many geeks and techies were largely libertarian (us included) as well as Mac users. One thing led to another and it became a joke that you buy a Mac, start wearing sweaters and riding a bike, and vote libertarian... and not necessarily in that order :)

  • @phreakindee I've been reading "West of Eden" which was published in 1989 and chronicles the inner workings of Apple up to that point. I was in elementary school at that time in history so the only computer mentioned in the book that I've actually used is the Apple II. Videos like yours help me get a visual on the other computers written about in the book. So thanks again.

  • @phreakindee Nice to see you are a libertarian. States rights and geek liberties FTW.

  • "In the name of Steve Jobs Amen."

    Fucking LOL.

  • I really want a 128k Mac and a laptop with MS-DOS on it. XD

  • Taking "cues from the Xerox?" more like ripping it off. :-)

  • 0:30, yea I suck at MS-DOS on the vpc, all I can get on the programs is editor... was that the only basic program that came with DOS??

  • 8:14, OMG TETRIS!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @phreakindee I saw one of these go for 2500 dollars with the original box, keyboard, and mouse!

  • im not going to lie im an apple fanboy and just love vintage macs, however i found this hilarious xD

  • That Chees game what is it

  • lol fuckin' "hip-sters"

  • Why are you saying it does nothing? It's excellent for MIDI sequencing!

  • @dvamateur Perhaps! But the focus of my channel and this review is gaming, and in that area it is seriously lacking.

  • @phreakindee Just wanted to say that your reviews are excellent! Very professional presentations. Nonetheless, I was browsing through your videos, but I didn't see anything on Atari ST. Are you an anti-ST Amiga guy? Just curious... I mean, you even have Acorn computer, not sure why not ST... It was pretty excellent for gaming, too! And by the way, the ST was actually based mostly on Amiga company work.

  • @dvamateur Thanks!

I love my 1040STfm, in many ways more than my Amiga 500. I just haven't given it much love on this channel yet, as I've only had it for less than a year. I actually have a system review of the ST planned for next month!

  • Some of the best games were written for the later versions of the Mac, like 512k. Dark Castle (and Beyond Dark Castle), Warlock, Deja Vu, Shufflepuck Cafe etc. Dark Castle recently got a revamp in 2008 for the Mac OsX... Return To Dark Castle.

  • Actually, I would run System 7.5.5 on anything with a 68040

  • Omg there was so Internet:(

  • Known as a mouse LOL

  • DALEKS????????

(amazing dr.who reference that I've made here)

well the 128kis a nice computer but Iprefer the powemac G3 Beige with an early Mac OS X

  • wouldn't buying a scsi drive for the port fix most if not all the disk swapping?

not trying to defend the machine, just trying to find ways to make it better.

  • I found a macintosh on ebay for 100$ with a keboard and mouse

  • I was on macintoshgarden and I was going to download something but I realized that it was a .sit file. I didn't download it because I am running Mac OS 7.5.5 and I cant unsit a file with Stuffit Expander 4. Any recommendations of what stuffit expander version I should use? Or should just give up on Stuffit and find something else? Please respond!

  • love the MSDOS t-shirt!! And yes I totally agree about the first Mac.. not very useful.. but fun to mess with if you are truly a retro computer dork, like me.. I have the first Mac.. but I'm afraid to use it often because those early models had a tendency to overheat and will need new power supply boards.. an SE is an excellent idea.. speaker's in the front, has a fan..

  • haha, watching all of this on a macbook pro

  • The newest macs that they make today would probably would cost like maybe 10,000,000 $ if they came out in the 80's, only the richest of the rich could buy them then.

  • Hi there, what is the music in the background of your video? I've heard it before, I just can't put my finger on it! Thanks.

  • "Don't take that to mean that I hate the 128, I don't, I just think it's useless."

    LOL

  • Groovy

  • k! google chrome r+unning on macintosh! LOL! 7:41....

  • I got a macintosh SE at RePC for $35 with a wiped hard drive. Now to find System 6.0.8................

  • I'm the proud owner of a 91 Mac Classic running 7.0.1 :)

  • I GOT ONE OF THESE TODAY!

  • They forced us to learn how to touch-type on these machines in junior high and it's where I first played SimCity. I hated that class and had no idea what SimCity was about but little did I know in a few years I'd become a hardcore geek and fan of SimCity. :P

  • Best Macs to buy to actually do things:

For monochrome games, go with an SE/30, and run Mac OS 7.1 or 7.0.1.

For later 68k games, go with anything with a 68040, and run Mac OS 7.6 or 8.1.

For anything PPC, get the latest thing you can find that can run OS 9.

Don't bother with the 128k or 512k. They will just frustrate you, unless you just want them for their value as a collectable.

  • @someperson42 This is phreakindee, and I approve of this message. 100%.

  • @someperson42 I got a PPC with mac os x 1.0

  • @someperson42 What about the plus?

  • @someperson42 STILL USING A 128K THAT I FOUND FOR 50£!

I get it with a system disk a game disk and a app disk

  • @someperson42 Uh what about frogger Mac os 1-5

  • @someperson42 I'd say the Plus or the SE with systems 6.0.8 to 7.1 for monochrome games, early color 68K: Mac IIsi, LC II, or similar machine running an early version of System 7, for 68k games from 1991-1993, go with an LC III. I'd actually say the LC III is the best vintage apple computer to get, because it runs most 2D color 68k games just fine, and with an Apple IIe card it can be a very nice Apple IIe emulator. For late era 1993-1995 68k games, go with a Centris 610 or 650. IDK about PPC.

  • woahh i remember using this back in elementary school! more than 11 years ago

  • Wow, that was a steal at $50, these are worth a fortune nowerdays!

Though I have to correct you, it wasnt the slowest 68k CPU, there was a 4Mhz version of that 68k also.

  • @R33Racer Slowest in a Mac though! :D

  • Comment removed

  • I'll subscribe.

  • at the start of the video you talked about the apple lisa, have you ever played with one or have you thought about getting one?

  • @mrgoodbites Never used one, never even thought of buying one, and the reason behind both is they are somewhat rare and expensive. I'd love to use or even own one, but I find it highly unlikely anytime soon!

  • Thank you for reviewing this. I've been feeling nostalgic lately and I was thinking about buying one of these off Craigslist. Never owned a Mac before, so was gonna start with this one. Your excellent review was all the nostalgia I needed. After seeing how much disk swapping I would have been in for and realizing that there really would not be much to do, I decided to do without it. My wife and wallet send their thanks, too! Keep up the reviews, I'm gonna watch some more of your stuff right now!

  • Interesting

  • Cool :) We have one of these in my A+ Cisco class.

  • Nice video. Thanks.

  • must have

  • does it have tetris if it has thumbs up if it does not tumbs down

  • i like your videos and i dont want to come across as a hater, but why are you reviewing a 30 year old computer and talking about a bunch of other old computers???

  • @ThugEmpire101 Because they're rad and I enjoy doing so.

  • @phreakindee Indeed old computers are rad (so 90's FTW!)

  • @phreakindee Did you or could you review a BBC micro or oric alcatel? you seem to know a lot about European computers so I thought I I'd ask. Cool video as usual!

  • @farcher3 I have an Acorn Electron, hope to have a BBC Model B on the way soon, don't have any Oric machines. I'll review any and all whenever I can get my hands on them though!

  • @phreakindee You have one, you filmed a review of it...

  • @ThugEmpire101 "why are you reviewing a 30 year old computer and talking about a bunch of other old computers???"

Why do people do the same thing with old cars, or old guns? They have little practical use anymore, but history and nostalgia are fun.

  • You got a good deal for your computer. They are expensive buggers and the original keyboard is really hard to find.

  • DALEKS FTW

  • I owned a Mac Plus as a child. But then one day it disappeared. :(

Turns out my mom has a habit of donating stuff to The Salvation Army should she find it to be "obsolete". Surprising as the Mac Plus was obsolete when I got it in the first place (1997).

It had some real fun games on it though. I'll miss it.

I currently own a desktop PC running Windows 7 and an early 2008 model MacBook. And yes, I do listen to Animal Collective and ride a fixed gear bike. Your portrayal is not off at all. :)

  • @Rogueofmv I feel your pain. Lost my original NES and a bunch of games that exact same way.

  • My friend just got one of these. Now I just need the acid. And I'll be set. *<:P

  • I have 2 original working Macintosh's both from the first week available in Jan 1984 Serial # 2336 and 5132 on the logic boards. The pre 6000 ones were the first ones sold in Apples Dealerships.Actually the original model didn't sell very well and Steve Jobs was booted out of the Macintosh division because of the poor sales. He left Apple in 1985.

  • I never understood apple, they market their products as computers for the home user, etc but non of their products have ever been suited to games. the 128k is good evidence that apple had no idea of the massive opportunity they could have had simply by adding colour, allowing the user to have their own monitor and perhaps improve the graphics capabilities a bit.to be honest i think that every other computer on the market was better suited to the home user and that this was a business computer.

  • Great reviews!!!

  • Another great review. I have to ask... where do you store all these computers when you're not using them? Do you keep them all on display in your spare rooms or living room?

  • @BrianPicchi A couple have migrated to the bedroom, but most of them are in a closet and the ones I use most are on display in the room I show in the videos.

  • Wow! I owned an SE30 way back when. Can't believe how far along with come. Thanks for sharing.

  • I'd like to take this occasion to state, for the laymen and the youngins in the room, that lode runner was a fucking awesome game :)

  • The ol bastard still works?

  • apple FTW!!!! 

  • is it the first mouse compaitable pc ??

  • O MAN!!!!! I used to use this guy at my house. i used to play mavis beacon and kids pix i think... and also i deff played bonzai and chess on there. it was sooo slow tho.

  • I think your computer is older than most hipsters, dude.
