This song is about a talented artist that just does not get any credit with his work and when he dies all will be forgotten and his art will not live on. I hope Symphony X will not have that fate.
Lady of the snow was also Miller's. He has a new band, but man, when he was with Romeo they made such awesome music. Lepond is a monster in terms of technique but not even a shadow of Miller's composing craft.
am I the only one who's actually impressed how the drums and the guitar sound at 4:13 ? I mean, Romeo obviously play way more attractive parts, but this part... I don't know, sound a lot good. Really good actually, I got really curious on what makes this part so cool. And it's not the keyboard solo, 4:13 is the moment the solos breaks for a while.
Where is the trippy exotic shit at, that these dudes sometimes play? Its like i have to wait for Michael Romeo's guitar solos and his off the hook guitar riffs with the band before i get a good fix out of it..
@twooffour this isn't pop, and I think it's a bit naive to think that this isn't complex music. This is one of their best songs in my opinion, and I think they will be remembered well, but perhaps not as well as Bach and Mozart, but still pretty well!
You shouldn't be comparing this to "Bach and Mozart" without first taking into account the countless other known, less known, and hardly known composers from those eras - even if just to avoid sounding cheesy ;)
I'll give this song more attention in short time, but I don't see what's so "complex" about it. It's not vapidly primitive, has an atmospheric background, very nicely intonated vocals and lead guitar.
Still, the harmony and structure are pretty simple and repetitive.
Who said that pop or folk music can't be advanced and difficult?
watch?v=WYlFxupY5YE
Or simply very good, and well remembered after centuries?
watch?v=Thy4nUUHc5I
Having that said, it won't be remembered "the same way" as the classical composers, as it is nowhere near the compositional complexity those guys achieved in their works (even though with Mozart, some of his lighter pieces are pretty simple, as well).
Not all prog rock, I'm talking about this song in particular.
@twooffour Dont know why one would state such a thing about those videos, but have come to the conclusion you should not be enjoying this song. a big fan of symphony x i am not, i like this song until halfway when they abandon trying to be melodic, and it does not have complex 3 or 4 part counterpoint like bach, but as a composer myself i can state itsnot that hard to accomplish, just writing note that fit harmonically going in opposite direction.and yes i love bach's music, but am aware of more
Not sure why you're saying that - I was the one to say that this song wasn't "that impressive", so you're not contradicting what I said, you reinforce it :)
The Tarantella was played in a pretty fast tempo, the singer pulls off fast jawbreakers, the violinist plays rapid notes with harmonics manipulation... it's fairly "technical" by pop standards, which is not to say that is somehow stands out when it comes to "advanced folk music".
Fenesta Vascia, as I said, is a popular Italian song from way back, and was good enough for Liszt to use in his Tarantella.
It's already impossible for me to "forget" about it because of that, but I've especially noticed how its "simplicity" in comparison to Liszt doesn't detract in any way, and is in a way more attractive than the transcription (which is, in turn, preferable in other aspects).
@twooffour You have a very particular taste and music. When i started reading your comments i felt that you sounded somewhat like myself in opinion. then i saw the videos you said should be viewed, i am a musician and have a vast love for prog, classical, world and folk music. The first video was not very tasteful or "advanced", the second video.. well i have already forgotten the melody for it was nothing special or worth banking in my musical memory
this song reminds me alot of Rhapsody of Fire but perhaps not as cheesy as some of Rhapsody's songs. Don't get me wrong, I like Rhapsody but you gotta admit, some of their songs are a bit...cheesy...ever see the music video for Rain of a Thousand Flames by Rhapsody of Fire? Yeah...you get my point? Exactly? Symphony X is Awesome :P

An incredibly naive thing to say.
This song might be remembered like we remember "Fenesta Vascia" (1852) - a beautiful SIMPLE POP SONG.
Mozart and ESPECIALLY Bach wrote complex music that provides material for decades of study and analysis.
Symphony X won't be remembered in the same way as Bach, at least not judging by this song ;)

Oops, mixed up the links - Fenesta Vascia is the one "remembered" after centuries, as it's a popular Italian song ;)
Probably owes some of its fame to the fact that Liszt arranged it in his Tarantella, though.
