One thing I truly appreciate about Max's older tunes. Is how occasionally he would add an outro that was nearly COMPLETELY different from the actual song, and pull it off as if they were meant to go together. He is a true gift to the music industry on all counts.

A friend of mine let me borrow "In Defense of The Genre" a while back. Then ever since then I've been hooked on them. Trying to find whatever's available of their old stuff. I wish I had a copy of Baseball. I'm way impressed with their older stuff. Reminds me of being back in high school. Well, those are the memories it invokes. I like "In Defense of the Genre" better than their older stuff. It's more creative in the writing and it tackles a lot of Max's insanity problems. Essentially all of Say Anything's stuff is brilliant, though.

no offence to say anything fans or max,cuz im a HUGE fan..im an artist who covers like 10 songs by him when i play live as well as my own songs..but the reason these ones are more heart felt is becuase he wrote them by himself in his basement while haveing nothing..no hot girls no new band members sucking his balls...no criticly amazing reviewd cds..and he was depressed...alot of this goes away when fame hits..i know it sounds like im hating but im not..im explaining..well giving you my opinion.

@JimmboSlice I personally think it was because he was younger at the time, he released Baseball in his teens, and, when you're a teenager, your love life and emotions weigh so heavily in your life. Every love seems like the love of your life, every break-up makes you really damn depressed (plus Max is bipolar, so his lows at the time were lower than most teenagers').

When he released ...Is a Real Boy he still seemed pretty depressed, but he wrote the songs on the record more as self-criticism

Every band once they get on a big time label, always changes a little bit and Say Anything were obviously going to get on one. Mainly they havent changed so much that they are completely different.
