They updated the building codes in the early '90's to mandate that anything hanging from a suspended ceiling needed to be anchored to the building structural frame with steel wire.
uuumm actually, that earthquake shook WAY harder than it seemed on camera. Camera and real life are 2 different things. that was a 6.9 to a 7.1 and in the same town it was centered in Santa Cruz, Ca. or near it APTOS (forest) was were it was centered. and it shook HARD. here in san jose, this last march we had a 4.3 or 4.4 and it shook pretty good but only for like 2 seconds.
ok look, the video doesnt show u how strong the ground is shaking, u may be basing ur question on ur view of the t.v. or the room not shaking side to side and up and dwn. but i assure u, since i was there & lived less than 20 miles from the epicenter in San Jose, california it was very strong and got worse after the video ended. the video doesnt depict the true ground motion; so to u, it seems the lights are falling eazily, when in fact its a major quake of wich u have no obvious experience :)
This quake shook much harder than the video indicates. It was only a 6.8-6.9 moment magnitude (7.1 surface magnitude due to liquefaction in many areas), and caused major damage across a large portion of the Monterey and San Francisco bay areas.. A really large earthquake (7.5+) would completely devastate an area as ill-prepared as these areas were prior to that quake.
Wow, I'm amazed the TV stayed put during all that shaking in contrast with the ceiling lights falling.

I don't live in an earthquake-prone area, but wouldn't places have lights that don't fall so easily during an earthquake?

I agree I was in Salinas when the earthquake hit it was felt very strongly there.

I'm sure that now buildings are built to withstand an earthquake better, but remember that this video is from 1989...

Does anybody know which classroom at UC Santa Cruz this is, or who's teaching it? Where are the students today?
sunshine6565 3 years ago 2
I just asked my self the same question
A2theO2010 2 years ago
This classroom was within 5 miles of the epicenter. So they were basically on top of it.

the light fixtures seem to have come down to fast even considering how powerful the quake was. Were they installed to code?

this is why people have to hide under desks instead of standing around like an idiot watching the debris falling.

I live in the UK, so I'm not surprised if that happened at schools, colleges or universities.
