This is not CoD. This is just a drive with bad sectors.
If it was Click of Death, the drive generally wouldn't even be recognized by the PC and they will generally spin themselves down after only a few seconds of run time.
This is what Click of Death actually sounds and looks like: watch?v=h8S5F2Bd7uA
mh... that explains a lot. but not everything:) my HD does this click of death as well. interestingly, it doesnt do it all the time, only sometimes from the beginning but mostly after it has been running for a while. simple restarting does not help, only "manually" shutting down, waiting until it stops spinning and starting up again. can anyone tell me what that means? or does it just mean the bad sector is at a spot that is not accessed all the time?
@D3w10n I've heard of people putting clear lexan over the top of their drives so you can see the inner working, but I have no clue how the 'average person' would go about doing that and still have a working drive. The innards of a HD are VERY susceptible to dust and whatnot and 'should' be opened in a so called "clean room". I say should because I've opened drives myself before and had it still work, well, at least long enough to recover data.
Ahh so that's what it sounds like when the reader is jumping around like that. Kind of sounds like a bad case fan going out like what I'm hearing from my rig right now. I just hope that its not happening.
I have an WD500AADS 500GB green caviar... I have a strange sound too... Bought it like 6 months ago... I can't really describe the sound but it comes in different time terminals. I noticed when i play a game and if that clicking sound appears, the game hang for about half of second. It's very quiet and its very random. You can hear it when its really quiet in a room... Nothing similar to the sound on this video. Should I be worried?
@BattleForSanity The caviar greens are power saving drives (green) - The clicking you can hear is probably the heads parking/unparking.And the slight pause in games as also been reported with these drives.I have a WD blue in my ps3 and i can also hear a faint click every now and then. There was a utility on the WD website to prevent this clicking but it has since been removed.
mate can u tell me...my laptop harddrive is just start making little clicking noise...lite clicking noise..my hard driver is running good..so what can i do now to finish it..
Very Nice Video, I just learned about this like 3 days ago. I was wondering why my brothers laptop wouldn't take the OS, or Install the OS, or Enter setup. So I said, after 4 - 5 hours of trying to install Vista, I said fuck it, and new and said to myself, well a new internal hard drive should fix this, and sure shit, when I read the comments on bestbuy online, a person said that's what they had, and just bought the new 2.5" Serial ATA Internal HD for a laptop.
My hard drive makes this strange spinning noise when i boot up my pc (sounds like a DVD starting to spin) then it clicks 2-3 times and works fine.I havent had any slowdowns or freezes.Should i be concerned?
my hardrive makes the clicking noise...randomly...it would go for like 30 minutes then two clicks..then gone....2 hrs later clicking noise back...and i have had it for 3 years now and thats the first time i have heard it...i chkdsk an defraged but nothing still there.....am thinking of nuking the whole system( system restore) but that is jsut a pain..conisdering all the updates i will install later on(3 yrs worth) if i restore to an earlier time like 4 wks b4 it started it still clicks
@isayhifive Yous should test the hard drive with a program like Vivard. it should be able to tell you if there is a problem. Before you do anything, back up your data.
@SergeiKrutov This video has nothing to do with weather or not you can run a hard drive without the cover... lol and you can run a hard drive without the cover for short periods of time just fine.
@SergeiKrutov I know how hard drives work lol yea the heads float above the cushion of air, and if there was strong enough turbulence it could cause a head crash. but that's not what this video is about, and if the drive wasn't already dead i never would have taken the cover off.
@ByrnesPCGarage It will not cause heads to crush, but lifting head higher than it supposed to be, will cause heads to slide over hdd trying to read. anyway, whole story with opening cover to prove hdd crushed won't work, cause even brand new hdd will not be able to read with cover open.
Very informative. I would rank it 4/5 but i am running in chrome cause FF just broke. And chrome doesn't display this website right for some reason. Also maxes out my CPU and sad faces all the tabs when flash is running sometimes :(. Having similar clicks... And freeze ups..

Hi, what happens if i have an external drive and I plug it and I see the icon in my mac and it open the column with archives but after a few tries opening archives the HD freeze forever with the "spiral clock"? Happens every time I plug it.
Gotta love Toshiba's drives. You can always identify them from their two stickers rather than one, and their blue circuit boards rather than green ones.
I had a customer that had the same exact harddrive and made the same noise. I pulled their data off right when it started making that noise, right after it was done the drive crashed all together. So the bad news was their hard drive was dead, and the good news is that I saved their data. The drive was stock in a 6 year old laptop, which already outlasted it's expectancy.
I had a shitty Acer Aspire computer, instead of clicking, mine made a beeping noise (it would hold a long beep, then freeze, while holding that beep.) I'm not sure if this is related, but when I brought it in, they had said it died. :(
In fact, you also posted the exact same video under a different title which correctly identifies the problem.

Great video, I wanted to know why it clicks like that.
I have unstable sectors on my hard drive, but i can't afford to replace it. It's a 1.8" hard drive, and those are expensive as all hell.

My hard drive clicks very lightly and does it every few seconds.
Just timed it, there's exactly two seconds between each click.
Is that bad, or is it just reading data?
It doesn't screech and I haven't gotten a BSOD or hard drive failure warning so..
I'm just being paranoid.
