I tried tying a bow string last night--both attempts failed. I didn't expect to get them perfect on my first try but I am having trouble keeping the tags to stay together while I'm twisting both side/tags (after the loop) together. Any tips?
@Mypaladingdong a bow... a spears not that powerful only in a survival situation would you want one.... and you have to hunt the deer leggally with a license and in daylight you moron
wish i could afford that string... with that, i'd be better learned by learning how to make a bowstring out of more practical material... Like how to make bowstring from native methods... any links would be cool... I just can't see buying bowstring while i'm in a self reliance situation... This is just a good vid on how to weave it and I love it!
Some tutorials teach same colors (tag ends looping over to main strings) together when forming loop and others (like this one) teach opposite colors going together. Is one way better than the other?
I have seen instructions where the tags match the same color and instructions where the tags go to opposite color (as indicated here). What's the "official" answer? Stickbow tutorial teaches same color to same color.
I very much enjoy this dudes videos... However, those older Ben Pearson recurves should not be strung with fast flight dyneema cord.. B50 dacron is the recommended cord for making a string for older recurves.... Many newer recurves can use FF, especially the carbon limb takedown recurves.. I have an older B.P. Cougar recurve and its too damn nice to risk damage just to gain a few fps of arrow speed...Hopefully some of these folks dont go stringing up that vintage Bear recurve with fastflight.
I have a book called the dangerous book for boys, and in there in the section where it shows you how to make a bow, it says you should take the bow string off whenever your not using the bow, I don't mean like in between shots, but like if you go out shooting for a day, you should take the string off after if your not going to be shooting for a while, what do you think about this Dave? Or anyone else?
Yes that's right, leaving the string on keeps the bow under tension, weakening the wood and in some cases causing it to stay in that position with the string off. Some woods have a tendency to do this anyway, just from normal stringing and shooting, namely hazel, which is otherwise a good option for beginners (like me :) )
does hemp work. i was reading something about primative bows and it said hemp was a really good material but you have to keep it waxed because it isn't water proof
@TN3045 ... I have used this bow now sine he made the string for it, and its still together, and still shooting great....had to loosen it up a bit, the brace height was to high, but other than that....its awesome..and no split limbs.
@MrCableguyken It might last another 40 years... or the limb tips might fracture the next time you launch an arrow... Its not guarenteed that using fast flight will break an older BP recurve... Its just that its damaged enough older recurves that its now suggested you no longer use it on them... Most of these older recurves are now collectable shooters and you will pay ten times what they cost used to buy a comparable new one.. Then again, you got it cheap and its not a family aireloom,,,
Very not true, for one hes a smoker and it is also a very popular item to have in a survival kit because of its weight and ability to start MANY fires while being waterproof.
You misunderstood my comment. It wasn't a smart ass remark. I was being serious. But emotions and intentions don't carry over very well when text is involved. Apology accepted.
@b1gje55e Just shutup you goof. You should apologize to the person who made this video because they spent alot of time makeing a bow string and all you can harp on is him useing a lighter. Like fuck you pal.
@b1gje55e Haha. K. You dont have any friends. So all you do is sit on your computer all day and troll. So beleive me your not getting me upset becuz i know your just a stupid fat sack of shit who watches porn and hates all day.
@TxBushcraft And my lack of knowledge? Do you even know what the fuck is going on? Or are you just one of those guys who gets in an argument becuz there stupid and have nothing else to do? Go get a life punk.
@shotgunsrbest Basic English lesson for you: Saying it's good to see something, means it's good, not that Dave is a devil for using a lighter. Have you taken a blow to the head recently? Check in with a doctor, because there is no way that could possibly be misunderstood. Even the average mentally challenged person can understand the entirely opposite concepts good and bad. I'm jumping into this argument because you deserve to be yelled at by more people than already have.
@Gandkvaedi did u just fucking say he wasnt being sarcastic about "it being good"? holy shit pal. your telling me to go to the doctors. and go to an english class.... you dont even know what sarcasm is fool.
Unless that old Ben Pearson is has reinforced tips, you should not use a string made with any kind of Fast Flight bowstring material. An old bow like that should only use a string made with B-50 or B-500 Dacron.
@ThaNorthFace It could be a lot of things. For example, the host server could have had a lot of traffic at the time you were trying to view it, your provider could have been slow due to high traffic, or maybe you were experiencing some pc glitch. I could have been all of the above. I'd venture a guess that if you'd have watched it at a later date, it would probably run just fine. I hope that you got to view it as Mr. Canterbury and company put out interesting videos.
Really a master's job! I've made some self and takedown bows recently, but used a tough nylon cord for string - works good enough, but ain't as beautiful as a real flemish string. In the matter of fact i've just finished a simple but powerful bamboo bow today-it's a pity we don't have bowstring material here or your video would be very helpful. Thanks for making and shareing it!
