It looks like he's saying something like "playing house other than with a child." I haven't seen the film so maybe he's referring to something in the film itself and is being sarcastic. I know there is a young girl in it and that's what he means when he says he's "playing house" with a child.
Why would Dick Cavett invite Rex Reed on his show and not expect him to trash actors like John Wayne. After Reed mouthed obscenities about Wayne, Cavett said how he liked to play John Wayne as a kid. He should have said to Reed, "If you were a kid today playing cowboys, you would probably want to play Jon Voit's character in Midnight Cowboy, a male hustler. You're already dressed for the part." You noticed that part of the audience didn't laugh at Reed's vulgar comment.
This blog comes 42 years too late to have any effect. If I had been a guest on the Cavett show that night, I would have shown Rex Reed where the bull messed his pants in the buckwheat. He referred to June Preisser working in MGM musicals with Mickey Rooney. I first thought he was referring to June Allyson or Judy Garland, but when he repeated the name, I consulted my reference book and found that Ms. Preisser, a blonde perky ingenue, was in a Monogram musical series, the Teenagers.
His predictions are so off, but I can see why he made them, back when things were more unpredictable and there were few precursors. He was right about John Wayne winning, though! And listen to that modern audience moaning at that! But also, it's not stupid for a foreign film to be up for both Foreign and Best Picture because obviously a foreign-language film would never win the main award anyway.
Utter racist piece of filth. He has no business being paid for his opinions. What in the hell are people thinking by listening to this piece of garbage?
@FungusMossGnosis: Well, I'll be a ball-less varmint and say that 'The Duke' didn't deserve it all all for True Grit (he did deserve it for his 1950's films, though.)
@FungusMossGnosis: Anybody BUT Wayne-he was playing a caricature of himself in the role of Rooster Cogburn anyway. It should have been either Jon Voight or somebody else.
@youvebeenthunderstru I think that the saying that LIFE IS A POPULARITY CONTEST rings true with a lot of music and acting awards shows. He with the most friends, money and gifts wins.
I've sometimes thought that some of the American Idols were picked more for their personalities and popularity...for the most part the "IDOLS" deserved to be on the show and a lot more of them should have gained more notoriety and success.
If you want to see a great interview with Rex Reed, click my name and scroll to Mary Avara vs Rex Reed. They debate the movie Deep Throat on the Mike Douglas Show in 1974. It's really funny.
He hadn't yet let loose yet here in '69 - '70, but Rex used to take me aback sometimes when I saw him interviewed on TV in the '70s and '80s. Because at some point he started applying facial makeup in a flamingly campy fashion: Prominent black eye liner was a bit shocking to see in the '70s on a male movie critic on TV, if not so shocking to see on glam rockers of the time. Maybe it was glam rockers (Bowie, etc.) who gave Rex the green light to pose for the TV cameras with such gay abandon!
@Bobb999 it shouldn't even be considered "gay" for a man to put on a little eye-liner or whatever. Straight men too should feel FREE to do so, and not have to be denigrated for it or worse...thank god we now have the emo/metrosexual revolution that's changing this...it's just about freedom baby.
Rex Reed came along at just the right time--after the reign of divas Louella Parsons and Hedda Hopper died down. Same time as Rona Barrett and Army Archerd. He was smart enough later to poke fun at himself in "Myra Breckinridge" and continued writing reviews thru the 1990s. I wrote him a letter in 1982 when he was the critic for GQ, asking him why he didn't write books anymore--and he actually wrote me back and had a lot of insightful things to say. I think he's a genuis.
"Hack-critic Rex Reed insults Duke Wayne and gets censored by ABC. Meanwhile, Duke Wayne avoids combat duty during World War 2 and Dick Cavett avoids combat duty during the Vietnam war." But Rex Reed was a frickin war hero...
One of the greatest contributions YouTube has made to my life is the realization that growing old is a gift because the world finally becomes so ridiculous that the idea of leaving it doesn't seem like such a bad idea. On post after post after post, it's who's gay, who's badly dressed, and who has (blech!) aged. I'm thrilled to remember a world of books and ideas, and a time when the Academy Awards didn't look like a family reunion because everyone had the same face.
"I'm thrilled to remember a world of books and ideas, and a time when the Academy Awards didn't look like a family reunion because everyone had the same face"
pfff yeah sure, and what fake and romanticized time would you be referring to now? btw, i think youtube is actually doing the opposite you suggest it's doing: it's allowing discussion/argument with all kinds of people that wouldn't have been possible before and opening up parts of our society we would otherwise have lost/forgotten.
Actually, John Wayne tried three times to enlist in the Army during the second World War, but was refused because of a shoulder injury he obtained while playing college football.
correct--back when celebrity people were interesting and had something to offer ,and listening to them was engaging and entertaining--Today EVERYONE MAKES ME SICK!!!
Dear lord in heaven!! Back in February I saw him on a Breakfast with the Arts special with other well known critics discussing the Oscars....man did he age!! LOL!!
john wayne real first name was marion. now if your name was marion morrison would you want to join the army and get an ass kicking from your buddies? could you imagine what the enemy would do ?
He was a very powerful critic and he speaks the truth it is even worse now, because they can be bought. I thought Scorsese was never going o win for the very reason he stated. And he is right about John Wayne. he was ready to drop dead and they gave hin a oscar, Thanks for the clip
I don`t know about his sexuality and I really don`t care, but pay attention to the commment about the acadamy aware...basicly he is saying that the whole thing is corrupted. You need balls to say those thing now...imaging back in those days!!!
It just goes to prove that art in a contemporary sense cannot be judged except through a prism of the times. In hindsight, John Wayne gave a delightful performance and enjoys as much popularity today as ever...Rex on the other hand...
What are you smoking? John Wayne aint that popular these days. And Anyone under 40 who claims they like him is probably living in the land of make believe.
@LickMyCuntMoFo: Since when did anybody but TEENAGE KIDS consider Zac Efron in the way you described, and why does it bug you so? He's just a young man starting out, and hasn't made any big films yet. Also, what does this have to do with the Oscars?
Very interesting, it certainly shows the vibe of the times regarding the clash of old Hollywood vs the new Hollywood. Oh! Well...goes to show you how much I knew about the draft. I just thought it would be strategically logical to raise the age so as to ensnare more men...
Sorry unfortunatebeam..yet, 30 years after the duke's death..he still ranks in poll after poll of the most popular actors. Amazingly, he's the only dead one in the poll ! Its probably because he is so real to so many on video--the people polled can't shake his memory. You may not like him--but, in that poll, john wayne shows up for decades on end. That's what you call a phenomenon.
It looks like he's saying something like "playing house other than with a child." I haven't seen the film so maybe he's referring to something in the film itself and is being sarcastic. I know there is a young girl in it and that's what he means when he says he's "playing house" with a child.

Reed is a terrible critic, but he's so right about Luchino Visconti's 'The Damned' - it's a magnificent picture that deserves more notice.
Hhmm, Costa-Gavras's 'Z' was nominated for Best Picture AND Best Foreign Film that year?! Weird times.
John Wayne deservedly won the Actor Oscar that year - anyone who said otherwise is a ball-less varmint.
