In all fairness the BMW's do do better than I expected, they are capable of off-roading, and they aren't too bad, they do well on rocky mountainous terrain but they wouldn't survived in a muddy forest area. They do alright, they aren't the best, the only car that is fully capable of proper off roading is that Land Rover at 4.53 onwards,

germans build good quality cars, (if not extorsionat on part prices). the only problem is there at an evolonutionary dead end? they all found a model that worked and stuck with it. sure every new model has slightly differnt lines etc but a bmw always looks like a bmw, a 911 always looks like a 911, a merc and audi etc? you get the point! another strange point is why do they turn most of the drivers into total c****s? i drive1000miles a week and 90% of all idiots on road are in german cars? y?

Apples to apples the x5 vs RR sport. The RR would give the same results.

Your general stm is too broad. And for the record my x5 will walk my mother RR sport any day of the week and not spend as much time in the shop.

944 Actually,according to consumers  report the range rover sport is more reliable then the x5. Also serious off roading requires low range and locking diffs,the x5 has none of those things.

@kentau123 have you ever had a Range Rover to say its quality is rubbish mate? in my house we had an X5 for 120 000 km until the gearbox needed replacement, everything else was fine except suspension needed a do over every 6 months, now there is a Range Rover, the one with the TDV8. it si much stronger, it is taken off road quiet often and tows a 1500 kg horse trailer. we never did such things in the X5, the build quality so far ar 65 000 km leaves no negative comments.

@Ramon25D Do you know that Range Rovers are owned by BMW from 2002? And that they have BMW engines ( BMW M57 L6 diesel engine, BMW M62 V8 petrol engine). The TDV8 engine is from ford. Range Rovers were equiped with some parts from BMW's own cars.

I know a lot of people who own BMW's and they are all satisfaid including me.

@endMCMXCII BMW owned Land Rover UNTIL 2002, then it was ford and afterwards TATA. The years under BMW were the worse, that L6 3.0 diesel engine was crap and too damn small and powerless for such a big car. that V8 petrol still left you wanting some more. TDV8 is from Jaguar, since Jaguar-Land Rover are one group owned by TATA. you probably live in the states where you have great roads and fuel, I live in a 3rd world country where roads and fuel are shit, and BMW's give lots and lots of prob

Would be perfect with at least 2 inches more ground clearance. My driver got a Toyota 4x4 stuck by Mt Etjo after the 2009 floods. No way I'd feel happy with the X5 with it that low to the ground.
