You dont need photoshop or any other fancy program you need skills, talent and experience ^^ also tecnicue and knowledge about color.... Yeah, if you watch my videos, I use MS paint,WMM,and LightSaberMaker(for the lasers, explosions,and lazsword blade only)but you are so right, the free programs are often thought of as worthless, but if you know what your doing... like this guy,you can do some amazing things for free...
