...and they cut off John McG's fantastic guitar solo. Typical carp TOTP. That's why I always hated Radio 1 too - fading out songs half way through and talking J. Arthur over the top of them. "Kid" Jenson is hilarious though.
So modern. Blinking lights, acrylic drums, and makeup on guys.. And the guitar melody seems up to date still. It doesn't follow the Beatles tradition but rather must it have been very avant garde at that time :)
Whoa!, this takes me back perhaps Manchester's most underrated band?. Caught them live in my home town Liverpool whenever they played. Once on the River Mersey itself ( on board the long since decommissioned Royal Iris). A magnificent night certainly in my top 10 live gigs. Ive been to a few Bob Marley & The Wailers ,Frank Zappa , The Grateful Dead ,Pink Floyd are a few that spring to mind.
howard was just to smart to stay with the buzzcocks..the buzzcocks was all about orgasms and bed wetting..which is fine..but magazine has some great lyrics that only howard could write
yes, i think pete shelly wrote the riff & devoto the lyrics so lipstick was shellys answer. much as i love the buzzcocks, the difference between the 2 songs shows who was actually the better song writer! can't believe magazine were on totp! i must've missed that one!
wow! how do i get to listen to that? i'd love to hear it! i bet it's better than the buzzcocks version but, having said that, it's not really howies' style of lyrics. (perhaps he quit the buzzcocks 'cos petse shelly was trying to get more input on the lyrics!?). let me know if there's a version i can listen to. ta.
i went away and learnt this song on the keys after seeing them on jools holland and had to play it three times for the crowd at my open mike night with the house band, a magical and sinister song!
Saw them in Erics in Liverpool in 1979ish they were good then too, liked them on Jools last night. One of those bands who never quite made it massive.
imagine you're a 15 year old lad and your fav band are on totp and introduced by a great chap like kid jensen.
check out LUXURIA / Lady 21 on youtube for Howard's better later stuff rather than watch him ponce about like a twat trying to rekindle the threatening magic he once inspired....
It's funny how certain bands don't get true recognition until a few years later...Velvet Underground,Zombies,Syd,Hammill...and these lot. Van Gogh Syndrome
Superb riff but can anyone remember early 90's group who ripped it off? Other than that this is awesome and yes so is lipstick (my favourite) shame the band had to split.
Wish it hadn't been cut short...some of the best lyrics 'Why so edgy kid? What's the matter with the voice?' were lost. Good vid all the same, and on a shallow note Howard Devoto looks really rather attractive here.
@musicsnobtobe : 'Why are you so edgy kid? asked the man with the voice." i'm not trying to be a smart-arse, just letting you know; he refers to "the man with the voice" a couple of times on the (fucking brilliant!) real life album :)
Clearly a big influence on all the boy bands. They all try to model themselves on Howard Devoto these days but few have his natural good looks or moves.
Interesting to see Kid Jensen casually tapping his foot at the start. He looks a bit like an Uncle trying to persuade the kids he still has it.
I saw then in glasgow on the 16th, the next day I got into the lift in the hotel I was staying at. This man was already in the lift, I smiled at him then I realised it was the bass player Barry Adamson XD

it's live, but it's not them playing the instruments. it's a recording. I don't know why, but they had the microphone on, so you can hear his vocals over each other.
Inexplicable cut in the middle of the guitar solo.
One of the greatest songs of all time but not a great performance. Howard looks really freaked. Sound is ok - but better on the album or, even better, the single mix.
DreadofDread...I was lucky enough to see Magazine live. Fantastic night. They olayed a cover of Buzzcocks Boredom and Howard said "This one's for your mothers". Unconventional beauty, yes. Howard was definitely do-able. Ditto Ross from Leisure Process who supported them once(check out Love Cascade video). Now I'm going to see if there's any Joy Division on YouTube.

Why bother putting the band on the show when they don't get to perform the climactic bit of the song ? Philistines. I blame Kid Jensen.

his face isn't too bad,
it's his haircut that really gives him
that avant-garde look.

? that's strange.
I like this single version of Shot by Both Sides
more than the Real Life album version.

it's live, but it's not them playing the instruments. it's a recording. I don't know why, but they had the microphone on, so you can hear his vocals over each other.

Isn't it just a very slightly different mix of the song as Top Of The Pops required back then?
