  • Magazine is back! Hail Magazine!

  • cool

  • Very good!

  • this sounds like a buzzcocks tune in parts

  • @ram29jackson When Devoto left he took the riff from The Buzzcocks song "lipstick" and used it for this.

  • PASTOR HAKAN NESSER

  • belting

  • Bono said Magazine was one of his influences. What an insult!

  • @kbinco Shame U2 didn't split in '81 too - they did f@ck all after then anyway.

  • looks abit like robo cop

  • hage

  • 268,551 views? This is a Punk classic for God's sake!

  • some people are naturally wonderfull

  • Genre-defing moment or what

  • ...and they cut off John McG's fantastic guitar solo. Typical carp TOTP. That's why I always hated Radio 1 too - fading out songs half way through and talking J. Arthur over the top of them. "Kid" Jenson is hilarious though.

  • What if you're Independent Party?(Shot by both sides!)

    Tulpa you done GOOD! TY

  • So modern. Blinking lights, acrylic drums, and makeup on guys.. And the guitar melody seems up to date still. It doesn't follow the Beatles tradition but rather must it have been very avant garde at that time :)

  • Ha .. what a plonker 'Kid' Jensen was

  • Whoa!, this takes me back perhaps Manchester's most underrated band?. Caught them live in my home town Liverpool whenever they played. Once on the River Mersey itself ( on board the long since decommissioned Royal Iris). A magnificent night certainly in my top 10 live gigs. Ive been to a few Bob Marley & The Wailers ,Frank Zappa , The Grateful Dead ,Pink Floyd are a few that spring to mind.

  • fuking magic

  • Is that Cuban heeled boots ?

  • kid jenson's tapping boots are quite the moment.

  • Date a Asian lady # lushfmlk.info #

  • howard was just to smart to stay with the buzzcocks..the buzzcocks was all about orgasms and bed wetting..which is fine..but magazine has some great lyrics that only howard could write

  • Asian sugar babies #lushfmlk.info#

  • They are a bit like Brian Eno on steroids.

Loved 'em then and love 'em now.

It's no coincidence that I also love Radiohead and the Manic Street Preachers who love love 'em to bits.

  • back when this was new, a now deceased mate said "everyone will have this haircut". well he died and i'm still waiting.classic schoolboy music...

  • Clearly not Kid Jensens finest moment!

  • saw magazine in1980 supported by simple minds - impressed? I wasn't xx

  • feel a bit old..

  • he does a perfect lip curl!

  • "Shot by both sides" "This n that they must be the same"

    Great lyrics !!

  • finnish band KOLAAA KESTAA did great cover of this song

  • Remembering Howard standing on his mike stand and leaning over the front of the crowd, good stuff.

  • Wot a kunt! That Canadian twat cuts the song off right in the middle of matey's solo

  • Magazine's Devoto or Klaus Nomi?

  • Such a talented Guitarist...pretty singer...where did they go wrong! Still one of my all time fave tunes

  • Can't beat a messy divorce for inspired song writing.

    Love it !

  • 1:22 I don't know why I blushed as he looked into the camera! So intense... Howard surely was a very beautiful man!

  • ... so good.

  • Amazing band, amazing song. Punk classic! Set the standard for what was to follow..

  • The musical similarities between this and "Lipstick" by the Buzzcocks doesn't bother me at all--I love both versions.

  • Awesome song.

  • Now listen to lipstick by the Buzzcocks.

  • yes, i think pete shelly wrote the riff & devoto the lyrics so lipstick was shellys answer. much as i love the buzzcocks, the difference between the 2 songs shows who was actually the better song writer! can't believe magazine were on totp! i must've missed that one!

  • theres a version of lipstick with devoto singing. shelley wrote the music thop and devoto used it in shot by both sides

  • wow! how do i get to listen to that? i'd love to hear it! i bet it's better than the buzzcocks version but, having said that, it's not really howies' style of lyrics. (perhaps he quit the buzzcocks 'cos petse shelly was trying to get more input on the lyrics!?). let me know if there's a version i can listen to. ta.

  • howard looks like ringer for eno!

  • @banditcountry Doesn't he just !! I don't think he's ever looked this good !! :P

  • @banditcountry Doesn't he lol. Still coool as tho

  • what a tune.

  • are they touring uk any time in 2010 need to find this out

  • i went away and learnt this song on the keys after seeing them on jools holland and had to play it three times for the crowd at my open mike night with the house band, a magical and sinister song!

  • amazing!!!!

  • I love Magazine and Shot by Both sides has been one of my favorites for years. GREAT keep the MAGAGINE ENERGY GOING.

    Fan Helen x

  • Saw them in Erics in Liverpool in 1979ish they were good then too, liked them on Jools last night. One of those bands who never quite made it massive.

  • ive just this minute seen the jools show and been on here to find the old stuff howard devoto still has slight weirdness which i like

  • I agree with you mate; caught him on Later the other night he seemed to unerve Jools a little bit.

Magazine sounded great and as for that Bass Player?? FCUKING SLAMMIN! he looked cool too..

  • Bass player is good mate true under-rated band magazine were ,wish id of caught them on there re-formed tour .

  • Adamson. What a fucking geezer.

  • You cut off the guitar solo as always you fuckin idiots!

  • that's Top of the Pops for you!

  • yeah nevr mind that...

imagine you're a 15 year old lad and your fav band are on totp and introduced by a great chap like kid jensen.

check out LUXURIA / Lady 21 on youtube for Howard's better later stuff rather than watch him ponce about like a twat trying to rekindle the threatening magic he once inspired....

  • Jools Holland 13/10/2009

    Brilliant, Sounded great!!!

Shame John Mcgeoch wasnt there! R.I.P.

  • cant wait to see them on Jools Holland!!!!!!!!! :D :D

  • saw these last month over here in ireland...absolutely brilliant

  • It's funny how certain bands don't get true recognition until a few years later...Velvet Underground,Zombies,Syd,Hammill...and these lot. Van Gogh Syndrome

  • saw these at Erics in Liverpool in 197 something they total class

  • John McGeoch=Best Greenock export (and I can say that living pretty close by)

  • Another great song. Love the look of disdain on Howard's face at times lol

  • awesome, stil

  • Superb riff but can anyone remember early 90's group who ripped it off? Other than that this is awesome and yes so is lipstick (my favourite) shame the band had to split.

  • radiohead - just? :P

  • I was in an Indie band called FIN and we did a version on a charity compilation album. We used to encore with it too. That was in '93-'94.

  • I think It was 999

  • I love both songs "Shot" and "Lipstick"-both came out when I was born- sometimes the DJ would play both this and Lipstick back to back

  • freaking awesome!!!

  • Lipstick was a B side, this came out before.

  • B-side of Promises if my memory serves me right.

  • thanks

  • Wish it hadn't been cut short...some of the best lyrics 'Why so edgy kid? What's the matter with the voice?' were lost. Good vid all the same, and on a shallow note Howard Devoto looks really rather attractive here.

  • @musicsnobtobe : 'Why are you so edgy kid? asked the man with the voice." i'm not trying to be a smart-arse, just letting you know; he refers to "the man with the voice" a couple of times on the (fucking brilliant!) real life album :)

  • @scobiedog1 Thanks. Yeah I realised my mistake a few months after my post, but wierdly enough no-one seemed to care.

  • @musicsnobtobe ...except me! i probably appear quite retarded...sorry!

  • I heard somewhere that this song had a similar structure to a Buzzcocks songs as well. Anyone know what song that was ?

  • Lipstick

  • Ever fallen in love with?

  • Indeed Lipstick.

  • Yeah the song is called "Lipstick" !

  • Buzzcocks "lipstick"

  • has anyone seen then on the 2009 tour??? Are they still as good as they were?

  • Lipstick

  • fuck, this brings back some memory's. i seen these tripping on fliagric about 78-79

  • got this as well

  • wow ! didnt know there's a live docu

  • What was I thinking???? It was me who told Howard not to invest in a decent toupee.

  • Clearly a big influence on all the boy bands. They all try to model themselves on Howard Devoto these days but few have his natural good looks or moves.

Interesting to see Kid Jensen casually tapping his foot at the start. He looks a bit like an Uncle trying to persuade the kids he still has it.

  • LOL.

At the time though, KJ played a lot of punk/new wave stuff on his evening show so he was at least an Uncle in touch. :-]

  • I remember that. He only played that music so we'd think he was in touch. It's clearly evident from what he is wearing that he never was. LOL

  • I saw then in glasgow on the 16th, the next day I got into the lift in the hotel I was staying at. This man was already in the lift, I smiled at him then I realised it was the bass player Barry Adamson XD

  • Saw them Friday night in London - OMFG they were awesome. They just don't make em like this anymore. Hope someone will be posting footage soon. Wish it was Thursday so I culd go again tomorrow.

I am angry I am ill and I'm as ugly as sin.....

  • I was there too Jambo.

There's nothing this good anymore - nothing.

  • Im gutted I live in London and knew nothing about it!!Damn it!!!!!which venue did you see them??

  • Hey Jose,

It was The Forum in Kentish Town-a great night which was filmed and available on Youtube in 3 parts in high quality-av.BUT I've just been to the link and the video is now unavailable.Maybe to do with the whole PRS debacle.Dunno.I downloaded them at the time and will maybe try to upload em again. There do seem to be some clips from the show still on youtube tho.Magazine still ringing in my ears weeks later.A great night-thx to the band for all that and everything else too.

  • oh yeah? I ve been to the forum a few times to see Shane McGowan!great venue!!not too big!

  • I am uploading the video now so hopefully you will find it here soon. A 3 part masterpiece.

  • great!excellent !!! thanks!!!looking forward to see them!!!

  • Saw them last night at Manchester Academy and they didn;t disappoint!!

  • im going 2 c this band on the 17th of feb in manchester .... i cant wait..... should be a good gig...

  • Did Tony Wilson inspire this band ??

  • did you listen to the Radiohead version of this song? It's not as good as the original one, but sounds great.

  • Devoto what a Great. Never forget Howard

  • Lipstick? Shot by both sides? Lipstick? Shot by both sides???

Who cares! It's one of my favorite riffs. To have two songs by two fantastic groups using it only adds to my pleasure!!!!

    Bring it on.!!!

Buzzcocks got the edge for me personally tho.

  • The riff was written by Pete Shelley and he gave it to Howard Devoto - and later used it himself in the Buzzcocks....

  • Lipstick...nice...

  • are we still alive?

  • loved the punk scene 77/79

  • ya gotta admit. this riff sounds a whole lot like lipstick.

  • Ace!! I was in a band at school in 1978 and we covered this tune. I was a youthful 17 then. God was it really so long ago???!!! Cracking tune.

  • The best band no-one's heard of, well almost no-one

  • Definetly one of the most underrated bands of all time.

  • I HOPE THEY ARE NOT BACK TOGETHER

    it wont be the SAME

  • yeah I remember the Housemartins...are they not from Hull?

  • Yes they were, as are the Beautiful South.I was trying to make the point that Hull is hardly a hot bed for producing famous bands so who am I to comment! Although both Mick Ronson(RIP) and Trevor Bolder, Spiders from Mars fame, were both born n bred in Hull.

  • I fear this too... but I still got tickets for Manchester.

  • siouxsiebecks!!!....it was an interview in the Guardian newspaper on fri (12th)...with Devoto

The dates are 12-13th feb london forum

    16th feb...glasgow academy

14th and 17th feb..Manchester Academy....but it will be without Mcgeoch he died in 2004

  • congratulations. today this video was selected by the NYC Punk Rock Evolution Foundation. way to go.

  • Magazine reforming for 5 gigs according to todays paper

  • Where and when???Thanks hon,x

  • Ach!! that cut off just before my favourite bit!!

  • I'm so proud and happy to be hearing the great John Mcgeoch finally getting props from the public. When i was in 10th grade i always talked about how i was most influenced by him along with robin guthrie.I even talked about it on lunch breaks at my summer construction job and you would be surprised to see all these carpenters who where into the stones and Aerosmith actually seem interested but it was like circa 96 when people seemed more open minded than they actually are today.

  • A brilliant band, never got the status they deserved, but with the exception of the hair HD's face is similar to Marc Almond's!!

  • Does anyone remember when the change over happened! It was at rafters on oxford st manchester 78, great gig!

  • sadslag

  • john mcgeogh RIP,the greatest guitarist EVER,just ask radiohead, echo and the bunnymen,U2,johnny marr etc etc

  • Can't argue with you there - I think his greatest moment is the opening of 'Spellbound' by Siouxsie and the Banshees.

  • Klaus Nomi totally stole Mr.Devoto's look.

  • Yep, your right Pal, It's Lipstick alright. Both Howard Devoto and Pete Shelley wrote it when Devoto was in the Buzzcocks......when he left to form Magazine he wrote this and Little Pete wrote Lipstick.....both good.

  • is it me, or is this song sounds like lipstick from the buzzcocks??

    anyway, its cool this song..

  • does anybody know what guitar that this ?

    thanks

  • Yeah, it's a Yamaha SG-2000.

    Hope that helps.

    T

  • yeh thanks alot

  • Can someone record any of the shows in London or Manchester and stick em up on here? for those of us who live too far away to see Magazine..pretty please!

    xoxoxox

  • Magazine are back to play new gigs in London and Manchester in early 2009.

  • Yeah but at 27 quid a chuck, Mr Devoto will not be gettin' my dosh. Sorry, but that's just a piss take, if you ask me...

  • How do you mean? It's quite easy to pay that for some stadium gig where you can't even see the band. You may not get another chance with this one so I'd roll with it...

  • Likely only that Mr Devoto et al will only receive a very small percent of that, these days it's 90% promoters 10% band, so as HughDW says roll with it, it's going to be 2 gigs only , thats that, a not to be repeated experience, and will be damn better than any stadium gig for sure .......

  • god look at that stupid yankee tit kid jensen{abs out of touch with this group}awesome band and song, bought there album when i was at school.

  • legendary.

  • The Keyboardist is now a music teacher at a college in Scunthorpe...

  • Sure? Dave Formula or Bob Dickinson? Formula is recording a solo album and Dickinson plays in different experimental projects.

  • fucking brilliant band : state of jensens leggy pose at thr intro : what a cock !

  • f Brilliant ...

  • even Casa like it

  • i went to the night that devoto went from buzzcocks to magazine at rafters anyone remember that night?

  • Very Diffrent sound but Mr. Devoto is a genious. I like his stuff in the Buzzcocks too.

  • the 2nd best performance ever on TOTP(after bowie hugging ronno natch)but the 1st song to go DOWN the charts a week later

  • I often wonder if Howard Devoto had a fascination with JFK.. given all the song titles, Much underated singer songwriter, brilliant band.

  • I've read a couple of articles where HD claims that Motorcade was inspired by something that happened in South America and had nothing to do with JFK. But I wonder if he was kidding--maybe just tired of answering the same question over and over. Supposedly the title of this song came from one of HD's friends who got frustrated by his habit of arguing just for the sake of arguing, often supporting a side he didn't personally believe in. And that story I completely believe.

  • I heard he was fascinated by JFK...Thankyou for your reply

  • Yes, so have I. I suppose only one person knows the actual truth, and he doesn't seem inclined to elaborate. I'd love to know what goes on his head. He and Martyn Bates are probably my favorite lyricists.

  • I wish he would elaborate!

whos Martyn Bates? I feel I am missing out somewhere LOL

  • Sorry about that. MB is half of Eyeless in Gaza. He writes some amazing lyrics, but a lot of people find the music hard to listen to. He also gets criticized for over-dramatic singing. They only did 2 videos for 2 of their poppier songs. They don't sound anything like Magazine, but if you like experimental pop, who knows??? My only point was he and HD have a knack for looking at the world in odd, creative ways.

  • Why bother putting the band on the show when they don't get to perform the climactic bit of the song ? Philistines. I blame Kid Jensen.

  • I prefer "Eläkeläiset - Syksy" :P

  • Magazine are excellent but only ya mum could love ya with a a face like that..lol.

  • his face isn't too bad,

it's his haircut that really gives him

    that avant-garde look.

  • ? that's strange.

I like this single version of Shot by Both Sides

more than the Real Life album version.

  • me too...!!!!!!!

    (From Spain... )

  • this is live and it's album quality. amazing.

    only magazine

  • it's live, but it's not them playing the instruments. it's a recording. I don't know why, but they had the microphone on, so you can hear his vocals over each other.

  • Isn't it just a very slightly different mix of the song as Top Of The Pops required back then?

  • I LIKE TO BE ON TOP OF THE COCKTREE!!!

  • Inexplicable cut in the middle of the guitar solo.

One of the greatest songs of all time but not a great performance. Howard looks really freaked. Sound is ok - but better on the album or, even better, the single mix.

  • DreadofDread...I was lucky enough to see Magazine live. Fantastic night. They olayed a cover of Buzzcocks Boredom and Howard said "This one's for your mothers". Unconventional beauty, yes. Howard was definitely do-able. Ditto Ross from Leisure Process who supported them once(check out Love Cascade video). Now I'm going to see if there's any Joy Division on YouTube.
