  • VOICE SOLO, Y U NO IN CD VERSION!?

  • Goddamn that was beautiful!

  • I like LaBrie. It wouldn't be the same without him. When I listen to the first album, I put on the Reunite live version, because it just doesn't sound the same to me with Dominici. I don't know why so many hate James. I'd be much more sad if he left than when MP did

  • @TheAdam159

Try to get hold of the Live at the Marquee bootleg, they did a few songs off of the first DT album which LaBrie knocked out of the park!

  • If you guys only knew... I knew James when he was younger playing the bars in Toronto ... His name is not James. The last time we were together we were riding a street car on St.clair Ave ... 1988

  • @zzerovisibility That's awesome!! Were you friends?

  • @KyleJPie10 Yah we were friends I haven't seen him In many years... He's a good guy.

  • @zzerovisibility his name is John

  • @meryuin Kevin.

  • @Meph761 oh sorry got it mixed, he took his middle name because it was going to be 2 john and 2 kevin if I'm not wrong one more time.

  • @Meph761 Portnoy.

  • @meryuin not John... The guy below this comment is right..!

  • @zzerovisibility awesome!!

  • @snowchick84 He doesnt lip sync on stage. The live performance videos of tours are compiled of the video from many different nights (john petrucci has many guitars switch in one song if you pay attention, since they are different nights). The audio however is taken from one concert, and what may appear as lip syncing is the timing being off between the audio of one performance and the video of another.

  • 2:05

    I came.

  • You guys do realize that this recording is a half step up from the album version. So that's actually a high G he's singing. Even more incredible.

  • @Xenorex247 I suspect that the higher key is a result of tape speed as opposed to an actual change in the performance key. There's a lot of open E string vamping on the second verse of this song, and I doubt they would have tuned the bass and guitar up to F open for the sake of one song. Though I'm sure James could have done it naturally anyways back in those days, haha.

  • @Xenorex247 I was just about to say that when I saw your comment. +1

  • @Xenorex247 could sound like it's half a step up becuase of the early tape recording, tape does that sometimes!

  • I'm really digging the original part at 0:39 in place of where the flamenco solo eventually went.

  • Just imagine the tons of magic music we would never have heard if James Taxi to that audition would have had a breakdown half the way or something like that.... :-)

  • i cried during the solo/voice

  • Man, James used to be the belt king! Love it at 2:34. Very nice and controlled.

  • Major LMAO at the John Petrucci pic. :-D

  • Friend of mine: these guys sound cool, but why is that singer with them?

    Me: because of this (F#)

Friend of mine: holy shit !

    Me: LMAO

  • Holy crap I wish he could still sing like this.

  • Idk where balerinauzicka is getting this whole DT fans are pretentious asses. I'd even go further and say the way you try, and i do mean just try, to make a satire about a DT fan's POV only serves to identify you as a pretentious dick that has some issues other than who likes DT that you need to work out. Also just for the sake of clarification, I like Nirvana and anything that brings forth an authentic artistic manipulation of our senses in order to produce a "vibe" if you will.

  • guitar solo with voice O.o

  • I think it's been transposed because it's been sped up somehow. The riff right at the end is soo mcuh faster than the orginal. This is sooo friggin' awesome though!

  • Amazing F#, best JameslabrieF# evers.

  • Umm, I'm not sure if that's the pitch of the recording, or the recording is just really old, but that's actually G...

    Or something between F# and G. :)

  • wow that F# is one of the best (if not the best) James Labrie has reached!

  • James is awesome

  • Haha the john petrucci image jajaja

  • damn some of this sounds like rush

  • @jjaye1

they were alot more rush influenced back then

  • @jjaye1 true a little bit of it =)

  • those shimmering guitar chords at 1:06 are so perfect!

Also , the F# is cool too.

  • FAWCK ME SO BAD

SERIOUSLY, HOW CAN JAMES BE SO GOOD

this is so unfair, how can i consider myself a pretty good vocalist and be LIGHT YEARS away from him, he's so talented, oh my fawking god

  • It sounds so effortless, like it's something he could rip out at any given moment... I've gotta be super warmed up to even hope to hit something close to that cleanly on a perfect vocal day. What an amazing singer....

  • Why they bothered to change the song at all form this is beyond me. It's the perfect closer, and it's especially effective because of the slight speed up in tempo. Plus, LaBrie's voice somehow sounds even more epic. Perfect closer to the album.

  • @Skwigelf100 the tape was sped up retard..hence the higher pitch and faster tempo...lol. welcome to analog technology.

  • @MistaMarko O____O Alright, you don't have to be an asshole about it. Whatever happened, it sounds better than the final track.

  • @Skwigelf100 my bad

  • Holy BALLS...This gives me shivers.

  • Even with the inherently low quality I can't stop listening to this clip because I love the singing "harmony"-style thing that goes on after the F# during the solo that ONLY seems to be in this tape. Too bad he doesn't (or perhaps... can't? heh) do that more often!

  • The fusion of DT and James Labrie seems like the hungry with the will of eat!!! Is only, guys!!!

  • yeah, u edited something.... still..

...i think i ve creamed my pants at 1:59 and ROFL`d at 2:16

James is the best, fits perfectly in DT

  • when you edited the another day single cover to say 'learning to live', what did you edit over james labrie's mouth??

  • It's supposed to be a smile, but hell, the resolution makes it look like a band-aid!

  • James Labrie was and still is amazing in my opinion.

  • Freaking nailed it! No wonder they hired him! DT Rule.

  • One of the most beautiful moments in all Dream theater's songs. James' F# and Petrucci's solo!

  • yep, so beautiful and the voice, its simply perfect

  • F... G. So sad. Let's say FA, SOL.

  • Actually, it's better, at least for me, to call the notes by the "letters" way...

Since it's a method way more distributed in the world, i mean, you don't usually find a tab calling the notes by the spanish way...

I'm from uruguay, i had to get used to the change, but, i believe it's better.

  • Spanish way? At least it could be italian way. But only englishspeaking people are using the C-D version (also german, in a different way).

  • It's italian

  • hell yeah

  • @agusique correct me if i'm wrong: you do not do spoken reading of scores. (I do not know how to call it :D, i mean, when you READ a score, without singing or playing, just naming the notes)

When you have to read triplets of 32 and things like that, using the A-G method is a suicide :D

  • no one does it better than james labrie

  • James's voice can still bring tears to my eyes!

    Thanx dude for posting this!

  • guys... i think that note in not a F# it's a G!! so it's even higher... some one check that... I noticed that when I sang learning to live and then this. It seemed to be higher...

  • oh shit ur right, i didn't believe u until i checked 4 myself

  • @atylerplai @paskajuzzy analogue distortion from a tape causes this, stretches the pitch, speeds it up a little :o

  • :O ooh... wouldn't have thought of that... it's a bit of a dissapointment though... :D

  • the tape is too old and it makes the pitch get higher

  • Yes...Its a G!

    Thats not F#....

  • @paskajuzzy, Yes, is a F#. I checked that in a piano.

  • @migueliax mmh... i just checked on the piano too, the whole thing to me sounds like G A Bb, Bb C D, D F G

  • @JohnThePetru According to "Keyboad Anthology" (a book of keyboard scores of dream theater, that comes with the voice scores as well) it's F# G# A, A B C#, C# E F#

  • @JohnThePetru You're right man ! On this video the notes are : G A Bb Bb C D D F and G(5).

    But the other guys aren't wrong : in the studio version, the notes are : F# G# A A B C# C# E and F# (5).

Why this change on performance of this video ? Because the song was transposed, and if Labrie sang the studio version, it would be terrified and horrible.

    ;)

Maxviti : DT fan, prog' fan and my god : Rudess !

  • @MaxViti lol, you think they actually learned the song in one key and completely relearned it in another? no, they didn't. this is called analog taping, when it runs through several mediums (re-recording to digital format as it did), it gets altered. tapes change pitch easily...this tape could've been hot, cold, or simply played at a slightly faster speed..the slightest change in speed would bump the pitch up a half step.

  • @MistaMarko yes you may be right. But if Johns (Myung and Petrucci) tune their guitars (bass for Myung) 1/2 tones higher, the song can be played with the same fingering and sounds half step higher. (For keys : there is one all of good keyboard a "transpose" button).

Transposition is used a lot by other bands in live (Metallica for example)

    But i think you're probably right ;).

    I don't know :D.

  • @MaxViti Why would they do that? I assure you that wasn't the case. Demos were recorded on cheap analog reels that were easily manipulated. :D

  • Comment removed

  • @MaxViti No studio update for keys, but check our album trailer we just released 2-3 days ago! Newest video on Tetrafusion's channel! Hope you enjoy. -Mark

  • @MaxViti There's no point at tuning the guitar 1/2 higher in this song... someone does it in classical guitar, with the capotasto, but it's mainly used for classical guitar, in this kind of song they don't use open chords that needs open strings at 1/2 higher.. I think MistaMarko is right, it is not the first time that happens something like this, with an old tape :)

  • JUST THAT ONE!!!!LOOOL

  • AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

best ever!!! i love JLB!! hes amazing

  • That would be "KJL" - his name is Kevin James LaBrie ;)

  • Oh God... Guys... I think I just came... brb

  • I'm just gonna go out of my way and say that after listening to Labries voice (UNDENIABLY) come back to its prime state during the Prog Nation 09 tour, He has solidified his place as one of the greatest TRUE rock vocalists in the history of contemporary music. The man is fuckin amazing and can probably at this time sing this song while taking his morning shower. Its just amazing to me that at this age he was able to finally get his vocals up to nearly the same level they were in during his 20s.

  • Totally, it took a long time, but on the '09 tour he was perfect, better than he'd been in years, sounded just as good when I saw DT in August as he did in 1992.

  • This is amazing

  • i like the petrcci one at 2:15

  • yeah that's probably what happened, the ensemble i'm in had a similar problem with the song Hot Hot Hot(yeah i don't like it that much either lol). the beginning hits an E instead of an F i think. it throws some of us off a bit sometimes.

  • fuck me.......i could cry lol he was so so good back in the day, is it really any wonder he got the job as singer for DT. an incredible vocalist.

  • that damn John Petricci cartoon hahahah hilarious. It's easy

  • I'd have to admit, tuning up would be a good way to play a mean joke on a singer aha, but here I agree, it's the old recording's age showing itself.

  • Recordings tend to warp over time, so that can explain why everything is a half-step higher.

  • Thats a G5 right there and am i hearing an A5 later?? :O

  • awesome... no wonder they picked him.

  • Think about it, the whole band would not tune up a half step to play this. It was clearly the old tape's frequency got bumped up a half step.

  • In My Opinion, James Reinvented The F#

  • lol @ 2:07 pic

  • Aaah, everything is clipping. XD

  • Kevin rulezz...

  • F# is the best note in music because of him...

  • I agree! It's so awesome that Led Zeppelin went back in time so they could use just F# octaves for the first part of Immigrant Song and Tom Morello used F# octaves for bulls on parade!

  • hhhahaa

  • @balerinauzicka

It's a semantic representation of a tone. F# specifically is one half step above F and one half step below G.

  • @balerinauzicka Hope you're not a Dream Theater fan.. Because then you shouldn't say stuff like that out loud..

  • @keyboardarctica Oh yeah? "Look at me, I am Dream Theater fan, i like music theory, I hate Nirvana, oh I am musicaly educated! Fuck all those songs who are under 5 minutes, I play keyboards, and I listen jazz fusion, because that is best music, woo." So what? AM I Dream Theater fan now?

  • @balerinauzicka If you do all thoose things and still don't know what an F# is..? Well.. It's a fucking note.. How hard can THAT be to understand?

  • @keyboardarctica music isnt maths. It is too ungrateful to label music

  • @balerinauzicka When did I say it was math? All I said is you should know that it's a note.. Just by reading this movies title... I think anybody (almost obviously) could understand that..

  • @keyboardarctica but I am not worthy enough to be DT fan?

  • @balerinauzicka no you're a dream theater fan if you listen to dream theater and like it?

  • @RyanTF2 oh fuck...I adore them.

  • emm... Sbowman, Where's your proof that they told James to "yell more" and "grunt" so that they could sound more metal?!

Dream Theater were as far from metal as possible, back in the early 90's...

    Just a little confused

  • he also had a surgery

  • He can, or at least could in 07. Listen to I&W 15th anniversary. He also reached higher tones over the last...4 years (not in studio, though Octavarium in studio has a F#, and a G# in Score).

I didn't know they told him to yell when he joined o-o, lol.

  • As the great MP once said,

    Suck my Ass and Balls.

  • EAT my ass and balls...

  • I'm being told many different versions of this.

    I'll go with yours.

    Thankyou kind sir.

  • its hidden in "In the Name of God" off the "Train of Thought" album. look up the album "Train of Thought" on wikipedia, there's info about it there.

  • Comment removed

  • I will, but thats not what portnoy says.

  • Comment removed

  • its still not the one he uses usually

  • Comment removed

  • trust me, you're not that much fun.

  • Comment removed

  • uhhh grunt more? mike portnoy said he wished james wasnt so gruff sounding

  • jip

  • wow, now that's a high pitch, bitch.

  • chills

  • i've got perfect pitch. I swear it's a G

  • yup your right, but the recorder is a bad recorder. it modulated the actual sound and bumped it a half step. he is actually singin an f# but it doesnt sound like it.

  • fairly jealous of perfect pitch. :O

  • its just slightly lower than a G... slightly... i think... you were very close though

  • It is. The song is sped up slightly.

  • did he sing an F# and the audio got sped up? cos he's singing a G up top...

  • It probably wasn't sped up. LaBrie hit higher stuff than the F#, also than G. and that note isn't a G, it is higher than F#5 though.

  • LaBrie.... his voice.... is.... amazing

  • WOW that was incredible. The woooa harmony thing...wow

  • Crikey, I wish he did that singing after the F# on the real song

  • he did something like that in the "scenes from a memory: live @ New York".... he sang along with the guitar solo....

  • The Octavarium scream is also an F#5. Live, he goes up to a G5 sometimes.

I know its a F#5, because its the same pitch as the Learning to Live F#5.

Funnily enough, for anyone out there that can do the F#5, here's a nice task for you. Go down to the sound manager, and turn the pitch up. Now match it. I can JUST manage it at highest pitch, which becomes a C6. Damn hard to hit, though.

  • He wrote 'Prophets of War' which is pretty good, and he can still sing, and he's not that fat

  • He wrote Sacrificed Sons - which is way better than Prophets of War

  • wht tuning is the guitar in

  • standard

  • standard.

  • 2:09: the note that got him hired, he used to be a better singer, but he ruptured his vocal chords, the fact he can still sing is suprising

  • i forgot, how did he do it again?

  • Vomiting during a spell of food poisoning.

  • By violently throwing up whilst in Cuba.

  • Loooool...Lipsync??? Loooool...u obviously dont go to a lot of DT shows...Btw, la brie can hit the F# now. And here he sang like the old days, maybe you should get a life and stop posting on every youtube vid thats bout labrie.

  • Your stupid. Simply put.

  • it is called video lag you bitch

  • That improv piece at the end gave me goosebumps...

  • evident in choas in motion? Labrie sounds really quite horrible in a lot of choas in motion.

  • Actually, I agree, he doesn't sound too great on much of CiM. Which begs the question as to why he'd be lip-synching with a bad sound, anyway.

  • he's just getting older really

  • thats not really an excuse...look at jon anderson of yes for example, he is well past the prime of his life and still singing strong.

  • it varies from person to person. And if labrie hasnt allways used his voice the right way at every performance it will get damaged, temporarily or permanently.

  • His performances aren't as good because he ruptured his vocal chords in December of '94. Not age.

  • Yeah, he can still hit the F#, but it'll slowly kill his voice.

  • He definitely still hits the F#5 in full voice. But he's actually topped that. He hits a G5 or G#5 in Octavarium.

  • What part of Octavarium does he do a G in. I cant remember. Thanks.
