Yes Maynard is special, in the sense that he is an ever evolving creative drive behind everything he touches. He never conforms, he never allows himself or his art to become stale. He changes not because the market wants him to, but because he has created something new and exciting and he wants to share it. You can't compare his music or his artistic endeavors with...well anyone really. He is his own. I always look forward to see what he will create next. Art is individual. Just as we are.

It's interesting to see people continually dissing this guy...calling him a sellout and whatnot...chastising him for being an entrepreneur, etc. It makes me wonder what these people are doing with their own lives - if they are indeed in a position to critique the prodigious, groundbreaking band that is TOOL, the beautifully ornate project that was APC, his own thing Puscifer, creating his own vineyard from scratch, and numerous side projects...if you're in that position, shouldn't you be busy?
@sphericalpyramid I noticed in his puscifer website that he sold 200 dollar tickets for people to come and shake hands with him after the show a little while back. I think that's really lame and pretentious. I don't think he's a sellout for selling music and merchandise; everyone artist does that, but he tried to sell himself in a very hypocritical way.
@Brom24 Most of the Puscifer shows, MJK broke even, didn't make a dime. A few of the bigger venue shows it actually cost him money to put on the show for Puscifer fans; this is also why there is a very very strict "no camera" policy at these shows. Puscifer is not about making millions of dollars, it's about a intimacy with the fans and vice versa. In order to help off set his costs, he had the "meet and greet" tickets for sale on the website. He didn't sell himself out at all.
@sphericalpyramid I think it is very refreshing to see an artist do what he does best......MAKE ART! This is a guy that has never "fit the mold" so to speak. If anything, he changes the shape of the mold,making it his. I believe he is less of a sell out than 99% of the corporate puppets that are making music today. At least he has a vision and is working to put it into fruition. Unlike most musicians today who let other people dictate what their vision should be.
Well, people have their opinions...and those opinions are predicated upon their own experiences, which may or may not be positive or intelligent. As for the download age, for ANYONE who REALLY likes music, not just groupies, this is the best age ever. There's tons of music available everywhere, especially online. Maynard seems to think we'll be left with the most boring engineered mainstream pop...perhaps...(...)

The music IS NOt far-fetched for him.... It's very industrial-style music, which, if you did not know, was more his original flavor in the band C.A.D. - before Tool.

I mean, I know it takes money to make a cd, but the front man of Tool, a Perfect Circle, and Puscifer, and a wine maker, and a merch seller, AND an organic store. Yeah, I think he has more than enough money to roll around in for a bit. There people working their asses off paying for everything, I think we deserve some music now and again without paying a dollar for a song.
I agree to an extent. I absolutely agree with maynard though. I do download music for free, but if I like the album I have downloaded I go out and buy it. So in a sense I am only borrowing the music til I have the money to buy it. And if you only like a single song by an artist then you shouldn't even care about the band at all, therefore you don't care about music much at all.
Also, without paying for that music there will be no more music to come from said artist. so enjoy while they're here.
No, I understand. I'm not saying he's wrong. I spent a ton on a vinyl tool album. And not to mention all the tool/apc posters/shirts I have It's safe to say I'm a pretty huge fan. I just think he has so much money, his first priority shouldn't be making more. I bought the apc albums, but If I want a really old tool cd, then I don't think missing out on 12 bucks is going to put a dent in his wallet. I totally support the lesser known bands though. Just bought the new We Are Wolves cd. :)
a lot of newly formed small bands offer their musics for free now. bands like radiohead understand the new market. MJK is defending his business and that's ok, but that's why his arguments about free music are biased. free music doesn't necesasrily equal bad music. he should just come out and say "that's my stuff, don't touch it" instead of making misleading arguments about what downloading does to the quality of music.

Yes Maynard is special, in the sense that he is an ever evolving creative drive behind everything he touches. He never conforms, he never allows himself or his art to become stale. He changes not because the market wants him to, but because he has created something new and exciting and he wants to share it. You can't compare his music or his artistic endeavors with...well anyone really. He is his own. I always look forward to see what he will create next. Art is individual. Just as we are.

It's interesting to see people continually dissing this guy...calling him a sellout and whatnot...chastising him for being an entrepreneur, etc. It makes me wonder what these people are doing with their own lives - if they are indeed in a position to critique the prodigious, groundbreaking band that is TOOL, the beautifully ornate project that was APC, his own thing Puscifer, creating his own vineyard from scratch, and numerous side projects...if you're in that position, shouldn't you be busy?

@sphericalpyramid I noticed in his puscifer website that he sold 200 dollar tickets for people to come and shake hands with him after the show a little while back. I think that's really lame and pretentious. I don't think he's a sellout for selling music and merchandise; everyone artist does that, but he tried to sell himself in a very hypocritical way.

@Brom24 Most of the Puscifer shows, MJK broke even, didn't make a dime. A few of the bigger venue shows it actually cost him money to put on the show for Puscifer fans; this is also why there is a very very strict "no camera" policy at these shows. Puscifer is not about making millions of dollars, it's about a intimacy with the fans and vice versa. In order to help off set his costs, he had the "meet and greet" tickets for sale on the website. He didn't sell himself out at all.

@sphericalpyramid I think it is very refreshing to see an artist do what he does best......MAKE ART! This is a guy that has never "fit the mold" so to speak. If anything, he changes the shape of the mold,making it his. I believe he is less of a sell out than 99% of the corporate puppets that are making music today. At least he has a vision and is working to put it into fruition. Unlike most musicians today who let other people dictate what their vision should be.

i like some of Tool's stuff a lot, but that guy takes himself way too seriously. First, I always hated how he sees himself as an Artist, with capitalized "A". Tool is cool, but it's pretty redundant.
As for the download age, for ANYONE who REALLY likes music, not just groupies, this is the best age ever. There's tons of music available everywhere, especially online. Maynard seems to think we'll be left with the most boring engineered mainstream pop...perhaps...(...)

I love maynard, but his bit about downloading music is a little ridiculous. I mean, I know it takes money to make a cd, but the front man of Tool, a Perfect Circle, and Puscifer, and a wine maker, and a merch seller, AND an organic store. Yeah, I think he has more than enough money to roll around in for a bit. There people working their asses off paying for everything, I think we deserve some music now and again without paying a dollar for a song.

I agree to an extent. I absolutely agree with maynard though. I do download music for free, but if I like the album I have downloaded I go out and buy it. So in a sense I am only borrowing the music til I have the money to buy it. And if you only like a single song by an artist then you shouldn't even care about the band at all, therefore you don't care about music much at all.
Also, without paying for that music there will be no more music to come from said artist. so enjoy while they're here.

No, I understand. I'm not saying he's wrong. I spent a ton on a vinyl tool album. And not to mention all the tool/apc posters/shirts I have It's safe to say I'm a pretty huge fan. I just think he has so much money, his first priority shouldn't be making more. I bought the apc albums, but If I want a really old tool cd, then I don't think missing out on 12 bucks is going to put a dent in his wallet. I totally support the lesser known bands though. Just bought the new We Are Wolves cd. :)

a lot of newly formed small bands offer their musics for free now. bands like radiohead understand the new market. MJK is defending his business and that's ok, but that's why his arguments about free music are biased. free music doesn't necesasrily equal bad music. he should just come out and say "that's my stuff, don't touch it" instead of making misleading arguments about what downloading does to the quality of music.
i've never heard so much good music in my life. it's plentiful.
