I drove numerous 04, 05 and 06s, the LS2 has a broader TQ curve, nearly identical HP curve. The V won due to better gearing, that races outcome would also greatly depend at what RPMs both engines dropped down at. LS2 Vs LS6 depends on driver skill! but the LS2 is better. No replacement for displacement!
My cousin has an 04' CTS-V (LS6) & my friend has an 07' CTS-V (LS2) & the LS6 wins every time, they even switched cars a couple of times. Same with the Corvette's... My father's 02' Z06 runs 2+ mph faster than my 06' Corvette Z51(6spd) in the 1/4 Mile. I always drive his Z06 & it is withoutout a doubt quicker than my LS2 Vette. All four cars I mentioned are bone stock. The LS6 CTS-V is 180 lbs heavier than the LS2 GTO & it ran almost 3 mph faster in the 1/4 in a mag I have testing both.

If you want a muscle car thats beautiful and won't cost a fortune, CTS-V is a great choice in my book. Do all the V models cut to 4 cylinders on light drive conditions to save gas? I have a 2005 cts-V and raced my brother, he has a 2006 GTO. He thought the GTO would beat the V, with my passenger I had 150 lbs more in my car but I still beat the Goat. So having .3 more liters doesn't make a difference but the cam and head setup does??...
the reason the CTS-V can beat a GTO, is because its final drive ratio (differential gearing) is higher. the side-effect is that at highway speeds, the GTO gets better gas mileage, since it's cruising at a much lower RPM.
that V was a 5.7 LS6 which is slightly faster than the LS2 6.0 due to the LS6 cam and heads setup. I have an LS2gto and ive raced acouple of Vs and they all pull in 3rd gear. Higher up top its a better race

No, actually. The LS6 engine is more powerful than the LS2. Dyno charts consistently prove this. GM underrated the LS6, knowing that they only had a limited supply left. The LS6 is really closer to about 420 hp.
I am a dealer, and have had numerous versions of both cars, and the fastest one so far for me was the 2005 V.

The first gen CTS-V ONLY comes with a Tremec T-56 6 speed manual. There is no auto option for 2004-2007 CTS-V.
