  • didn't know arnie had gotten into the narrating business

  • SUPER VIDEO !

    NOW SEE THE VIDEORESPONSE:

    WINDSURF DANCER ;-)

  • This has been Windsurfing with Werner Herzog, part 7 in a series on incongruous narrators. Tune in next week for The Holocaust with Fred Schneider

  • seems hard but good lesson

  • Ok... lets see him try to pump that sail without his feet on the ground....

  • @helicub81 I agree. I've tried pumping the sail up in deep water and all I manage to do is submerge myself.

  • And a Beach Start is really simple.. !

  • It is not a Water Start... That's called a Beach Start, cause he is standing on the ground ! FAIL ! A Water Start is when you don't have the help of you feet !

  • How can he do that???

    Its amazing

  • water starting is my goal for the summer. My new board is kind of a sinker so up hauling is very tricky.

  • dahab? =D

  • Brilliant video!!Im a bit gutted really,as windsurfing in the UK has really died down to what it was!I used to sail alot at south cerney lakes, ther was a great place there,i knew loads of people, and it just kind of died out, then they shut the centre down :(

I then didnt go as much, but wish to get into it again.I loved it,and when it all fell apart and died out,it was like my soul was ripped out.Im so sad.

  • @BogusBoy2121 If that was Lake 32, it's opened again. I used to go there everyday after work until it shut down, but I'm just about start again. Google ukwatersports dot co dot uk for details of the people running it now. You can get membership online, or just turn up for day sailing.

  • Boom facing the direction of the wind...that is the key- unlike an uphaul start

  • Great!!! Aloha Louis B.

  • nice video man!

  • This is definately the most helpful video I've see. Oh Yes Best wishes from Germany :)

  • This is definately the most helpful video I've seen :)

  • To lift the sail you have to kick with your feet to keep from going under. It's very exhausting if you don't do it quickly but if you're on a small board then uphauling is not an option. Once the mast is out it's just a matter of letting the wind do the rest of the work and controlling the rig. Not as easy as it sounds.

There's no easy way to learn water starting just practice. Just make sure that you're close to shore in case you get too exhausted and struggle to get back.

  • Cool! First time seeing the low wind waterstart. Will try the Low wind waterstart later,... Thanks!

  • Cool! First time seeing the low wind waterstart. Will try the Low wind waterstart later,... Thanks!

  • it look easy

  • if i lift the sail out of the water and hold it above me, the back end of my board turns away, and then i cant reach it with my foot, what am i doing wrong?

please help me, last monday i had to walk 2 miles with my gear because i failed to do a prober waterstart

  • @sk88888888ter

watch 0:22. Give pressure to the mast foot, then the boards end will come to you

  • @gslam73 Thanks man! i'll try it next time there is wind ^^

  • Great job

  • What's the name of the full video? i'we seen it long time ago but now i cant find it.

By the way, the best way to learn WaterStart is to sail in a good wind further away from the seashore where you cant touch the ground and fall down there. So you have no choice but to do a water start)) thats the way i learnt it. but still really hard to make it on waves if to compare with flat.

  • O common, this is obviously just a deep water beach start. The video wants us to believe that hes floating in the water w/ his shoulders above the water... which is impossible and is even more impossible w/ the weight of the sail.

  • how strong must the wind be to do a water start

  • my teacher always told me to go to the other side, climb on the board and lift the sail by the rope... now come summer vacation i will try this...

  • In high wind waterstarts be prepared to be planning in one second, it happens that fast. With anything the more you practice the better you get. Never give up.

  • can't I just start on the board then lift the sail?

  • of course you can, but you also have the option of waterstarting. i only know how to start by standing on the board and lifting the sail though

  • whats this location???

  • okay kool i lose water start but were is this?

  • Hot tip: It helps to have a well powered sail. Doesn't matter if it's heavy, has 15 cams or whatever just pick a size that will get you planning. 7.8 and under works well. If you know things are going to be marginal, keep that uphaul rope attached. Pumping not lifting will keep the clew from catching. Ps this is not a beach start.

  • that guy seems to be doin a beachstart actually, his feet is still touching the ground

  • good explanation!

  • how you pull the sail out of the water if you cant stand on a ground ? can someone tell me

  • Hey I'm a beginner and probably a sucker for stupid inventions, but I gotta tell you, the "waterstarter" helps me big time- basically a float/pad that wraps around the clew so it floats it out of the water for you... honestly it's made it so much easier for me to manage the sail in the water so I can waterstart.

  • You only have to get part of the sail out of the water. Once the wind is under it, the rest of the sail will clear by itself and start coming up.

  • You must put the sail in air and wind will push you up ;)

  • ok, thats not very easy , but its no problem :)

use the board, i meanpressing the board into water and pull the mast on it, so that the board will put it a bit up ... thats only possible with enough wind !!! then you let the wind go under your sail and then it will push you on board ;)

  • maybe a life-jacket would help. + the wind kinda helps too.

  • Place the boom on the back of the board, if your boom is too high, hold the back straps with one arm and clear with the other.

  • Use the tail of the board for leverage. Place the boom on it and it should clear pretty easy once the mast is perpendicular to the wind. If the boom is too high to be placed on the back of the board, holding the back strap with one hand while clearing the rig also makes it much easier.

This is how I learnt. Only took me 4 hours in the water to get one down.

  • Grab the mast, pump the sail up and down to free it from the water. Swim it into the wind a bit if it's really submerged. Grab the boom with your back hand first. Get the sail as high off the water as possible, narrow grip both hands on the boom. Then it's just a beach start while you're floating. If there is enough wind to plane, waterstarting is often less effort than uphauling. A smaller board/larger sail combo is ideal. The smaller the gear, and the higher the wind the easier it all becomes.

  • @TrueHeroUnderGod12 if your wearing a baouyancy aid (excuse spelling) then you should be able to fload wilst holding it, and once the wind gets under the sail it will lift itself up.

  • @TrueHeroUnderGod12 first grab the mast and swim into the wind. doing this will take the water off of the sail and get it flying. if your head goes under water keep holding on your hard work will pay off. good luck!

  • @TrueHeroUnderGod12 i don't know if this will help but here goes =P

the easiest way to get the sail out the water is to swim to the top of the mast and lift from the leach end of the sail with on hand on the mast it should be easier to get the sail out of the water ! as less water will be on the top of the sail :) the key though is having the mast on a beam reach so that the wind hits the mast first then the sail

    hope that made sense

  • @SurfyAdrenalinJunkie just to add to that, once you have got all the water off the sail and the rig is flying you can then work your way down the mast back to the boom, ready to water start

  • @TrueHeroUnderGod12

Ok here is the answer to this question:

This video is somewhat deceiving. You don't do any "lifting". All you do is rotate the sail around you until the wind catches it and then the wind lifts the sail. If you do any lifting at all, you are using as much energy as simply standing on the board and rigging up the sail.

  • @TrueHeroUnderGod12 That is exactly what this tutorial teaches you ...

  • @TrueHeroUnderGod12. Start lifting mast out of the water; mast 90 degrees to wind. You can push the mast up by pressing the board under water while pushing mast up. And use your feet (swim up). Pulling the mast towards the wind (by swimming into the wind) gets the sail more flat and makes it easier to get wind under the sail. Any water on the sail towards the clew is removed.

Once the sail is clear from water with wind under it (even 10 cm above water) the sail becomes very light.

    Good luck!!

  • @TrueHeroUnderGod12 its easy you must pull it into the wind the wind push the sail up and zyou can easily go on board

  • @TrueHeroUnderGod12 With the help of the wind : if you begin to push up a little part of the sail, you can take the wind for help.

  • @TrueHeroUnderGod12 being strong?

  • @TrueHeroUnderGod12 If you are sailing where you can't put your feet on the bottom, you should be wearing some bouyancy, this helps to lift the sail. Even your harness bouyancy will help. But if you swim into the wind with one hand holding the mast up a little, the air will get under the sail anyway.

  • @TrueHeroUnderGod12 Wind does

  • @TrueHeroUnderGod12 if the mast is facing into the wind when you pump the sail the wind will catch underneath the sail and it should pull itself out of the water

  • Hmm my sail is to heavy to get it high..

Does this mean i need a better sail instead of my old one i have..?

  • It is indeed the best vid for waterstart. I see others doing it so easily and i was wondering... Thanx

  • best waterstart vid i have seen anywhere - thanks!

  • thank you very much

  • is there a difference by stepping up with the left or right foot?

wich one is the best way to do it?

  • it's better to step up first with the foot that is more to the middle of the board because you want to shift weight to the board as soon as possible.

  • oh i see they do it with the other foot here... guess it's a matter of preference mostly

  • The (best) right way of stepping up is to put the back foot first (on the board)! It depends on what side of the board you are standing.

  • thank you very much! very informative....now its just a matter of practice! grrr...lol

  • gracias

  • very good awesome!!

  • water start

  • thank you

  • give us a video on how to star planning! thanks!

  • is a 5.0 enough to waterstart a 145 pound guy in speeds of 12-15 knots?

  • aaaaih id say maybe

  • If I had know this before I tryed to sail.... all that pulling for nothing xD

  • im gonna learn this

  • there is a shark under his legs looking at his pinkies to bite

  • thanks, ill try it this way.. im very new at this

  • Gawd i can't get to master water start

  • hello, of that page is the video? I would like to have more information thank you.

  • which page?

  • thanks
