"All about us is noise and bramble, thorn and din, each one of our ancestors on our tongues."
The level of detail in this poem that marks our moments of collective humanity, is what makes this poem effective. Its insight into those collective moments, our "noise" highlighted by the fact that that noise has the unique sound of our country made of many nations. Collectively making sound and in this historic moment a song. Amazing.
I loved the poem and her delivery. It was direct, yet layered. It invoked powerful images of everyday people and everyday lives and the inherent dignity in human beings. Most of all, it focused on hope and love as redeeming qualities for us all.
I find offensive and unnecessary the racialized and sexist barbs lobbed at Elizabeth Alexander.
Could we keep comments rooted in the content of the poem? And, lets not impugn others or ourselves with the use of N***** or C***.
theres no analysis necessary this poem sucks, for all of you googling words just to prove this poem doesnt suck, thank you for furthering my case. this was possibly the worst inaugural speech ever i had to listen to it 3 times to understand it, i doubt those people who paid money to be there at such a historic event were satisfied by such a lackluster poem
For example, All about us is noise. All about us is noise and bramble, thorn and din, each one of our ancestors on our tongues. It seems to me that the phrase all about us- to mean, all around us,yes? All around us is noise and bramble, thorn, etc. Her delivery of the line all about us- sounds more like all about us vs. all about them
Wow...all of these comments are so sad and pathetic.
So disappointing, but unfortunately real.
My personal opinion about the poem, it was okay it seemed fragmented. But what I was really disappointed with was her delivery. It seems to me that her text created imagery her voice could not deliver.
How is she a freaking professor? Is her degree in math because that was probably the worst poem I've heard in a long time. Also, good job to Hook for looking up the poetry lingo on wikipedia and then copy paste it to look half-way intelligent. What a dick. Also, he must have some type of fetish with dead guy penis because of the comment on shakespeare. We are all now dumber for hearing that terrible poem. I agree with espaceman000, this was worse than Vogon poetry.
I am offended by the ignorance, the hatred and racism and sexism in this comments. I am a poet, a professor, an activist and to take this day and not see it as a beautiful manifestation of how great all of our people and this country is.
I see a whole lot of people who don't even read poetry on a regular basis making asinine idiotic bullshit comments. Do you understand metric and syllabic breakdowns that push the aurality of the poem? All I see are a bunch of people who don't read shit.
Has anyone here ever studied poetry, its movements in history, and what poets are writing today? I'm not talking about nursery rhymes, or silly internal rhyme with cliche out the ying-yang. Or better still, has anyone published any poetry? Not self-published.
You know what? That actually wasn't bad. I came here to see it because people are bagging on it, and yeah it was a little out there for this situation maybe. But I kind of like it, it had some great imagery in it.
Okay. Maya Angelou is still alive. I'm sure she was available. Maya Angelou is one of the greatest African American poets in our history, and she is surely the greatest one alive. Considering Obama's place as the first black President, not to have Angelou give the poem is, in my opinion, an insult.
Yo, if I ever see or know who you are I will personally kick the living shit out of you. you yellow belly coward. Keep hiding behind that computer screen you chicken shit eating mofo.
Both the delivery and the poem are horrible. She sounded like Microsoft Sam. I loved the part about music.."cello, boombox, harmonica, voice." Priceless.
I'm not sure if it's the poem itself or her delivery that bothers me. I'm not sure if this is the worst thing I've ever heard, but it's definitely not my favorite.
This was the worst thing I've ever heard. Word has it, shortly after the reading, Shakespeare himself was seen delivering a slap to this woman's face.
this sucks

Great poem and delivery. It's just too true to the art to appeal to the average American, kinda like music.

You must be a total idiot if you couldn't understand this poem. I personally found it beautiful and innocent - it encompasses all people.
